Causes of Cultural Change
• Many forces can change how people live and thus change their culture– New technology– Environmental changes– New ideas- developed within a group or through
exposure to another group’s ideas (cultural diffusion)
4
Cultural Diffusion
• The movement of customs, traditions, or ideas from one place to another
• Can occur through trade, migration, communication, and force
• Causes changes in culture
5
Tradition and Change
• For thousands of years, cultures changed slowly…BUT the pace of change has quickened!– Why?– Positive and negative effects?
6
Understanding Other Cultures• People’s own culture affects how they think about other
cultures• Leads to ethnocentrism- judging other cultures by the
standards of one’s own culture– Examples of ethnocentrism? (video)– How ethnocentric are we?
7
Avoiding Ethnocentrism
• “Always look for the up side”– i.e. there MUST be a positive aspect to every cultural practice
for someone;– OTHERWISE, the culture wouldn’t be doing it
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. If [people] can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” -Nelson Mandela
