Fort DetroitThe British (with Tecumseh’s help) captured
the fort because state militias refused to fight on foreign soil.
Captain Oliver Hazard Perry
• Perry oversaw construction of small fleet to break British control of Lake Erie.
Battle of the ThamesHarrison ordered a cavalry charge through the
British lines, defeating them and their Indian allies.
• This weakened the British/Indian alliance around the Great Lakes.
The Creek War
• Andrew Jackson attacked Indian villages and made Chief Red Eagle surrender at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.
• The US gained millions of acres of Creek land.
Mayhem!The British invaded DC and burnt
down the White House.
Dolly Madison saved a portrait of George Washington.
The Battle of New Orleans.
• The British attacked through morning fog.
• Andrew Jackson led troops that slaughtered 2000 British.
(A peace treaty had ended the war two weeks previously.)

• Francis Scott Key wrote this poem while trying to get his friend released from a British war ship in the Chesapeake bay.
The Treaty of Ghentended the War of 1812.
• The US escaped disaster. All territory was returned and all issues left unresolved.
