CBRIS Sort Night
Friday, August 1st is Clara B. Rees Iris Society’s annual sort night! The club could use a
little help from everyone. We will be meeting in the church parking lot at 6:00 P.M.
Please bring your irises in for the rhizome sale at Yamagami’s Nursery the following
day. It would help to have the rhizomes trimmed, cleaned and labelled. That makes less
work for us while sorting. Remember to write on the middle leaf on the inside of the
plant. Please bring a black sharpie, a soft rag to wipe down the leaf for writing and a pair
of scissors.
Reminder this is a pot luck dinner event. Bring a dish to share. If you are doing a lot of
digging, bring an easy food item. You should also bring your own utensils, plate and
drink. We want this to be as easy as possible and would appreciate your donated
rhizomes. This is a big fund raiser for our club. As Philippa always says, “Many hands
make light work.” Let’s see those hands!
Marking codes may be found further in the newsletter.

Annual Picnic CBRIS annual picnic was held at Elaine and Jim Laflins on July 20th. Riley Probst
did a great job filling in for Chad Schroter as our auctioneer. We all went home
with door prize iris, auctioned iris and/or raffled iris. Club
members will be busy planting for a while! So many thanks
to hand out! The club thanks Elaine and Jim Laflin for
loaning us the use of their yard, Thanks to Carl Boro and
his helper of the day, Mark Greene, for the wonderful
cooked meats. Thank you to our famous parking lot
attendant Peter Marra. Thank you to Mary Collins for
keeping track of the DPI all year. Thank you to Wayne
Craft for delivering the tables to all events. Thanks to club
members for participating. Of course, we all wish to thank
Chis Dickinson the club’s picnic chair for arranging such a fine time for all of us.

CBRIS Picnic Minutes
President Barbara Pesek held a brief meeting at the annual CBRIS picnic. She wished a very happy birthday to
Henry, Marilyn and Lisa!
Barbara asked for a motion to accept the slate of officers and directors for the coming year. The officers
presented were as follows:
President – Barbara Pesek Vice-President – Lynn Stuart Treasurer – Mary Collins Secretary – Carol Dahout Directors – Philippa Alvis, Peter Marra, Kalpana Shyam, Mikey Lango, Mark Greene, and Jane Jordan Chris Dickinson made a motion to accept and was seconded by Jane Jordan. Mary Collins passed around a sign-up sheet for our rhizome sale at Yamagami’s on August 2nd. First shift for set up should be at Yamagami’s at 9 a.m. Sale will last until 2 or 3 pm. Sort night will be at the church on August 1st at 6 pm. This will be a pot luck, so bring a dish to share, and your rhizomes, cleaned, trimmed and labeled. Looking at my email list, we have many requests for That’s All Folks and some for Pure & Simple, Power Surge, Tableau, Mariposa (something, I can’t read), Expect Wonder, Aleutian Island, Thornbird, any spurias(?), Hollywood Nights, Lois Setser, Feedback, Winged Angel, Two Tone, One More Night and Wings of Peace. Mary announced that Chad Schroter had contributed watsonia and gladiola bulbs. Thank you, Chad. We need people to grow the door prize iris. Dave Henley, Jane Jordan, Lisa Ayala, Chris Dickinson and Elaine Fischer volunteered. It was announced that our hostess, Elaine Laflin was scheduled for surgery on Friday. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Elaine! Chris Dickinson introduced Riley Probst as our auctioneer. Great job, Riley, thank you so much! You can bring Shirley anytime! The auction was followed by our delicious picnic. Chef Carl Boro outdid himself once again with his juicy chicken, succulent pork, and tender tri-tip. Words cannot express our gratitude. Respectfully submitted, Carol Dahout, CBRIS Treasurer

Tidbits While Overlooking My Garden (What rhizomes should I dig?)
Our picnic was exceptional, fun and at a wonderful location. There was time to visit with members, eat morning treats
and bid on rhizomes. Our new slate of officers and board members was voted in and best of all we enjoyed our
lunch. Carl and Marilyn Boro certainly have barbecuing down to a science including washing pans, storage
containers, lids and utensils. Several members helped with this chore as well as drying and loading Carl’s truck.
I’ve included information from our former member Charley Kearns (currently Monterey Bay’s Iris Society’s treasurer)
about donating to HelpHOPELive for the benefit of Therese Cummins, the daughter of Jim and Irene Cummins, who
has had a successful double lung transplant. She needs continuing care, medical supplies, and care at a site close
to Stanford Hospital. Please consider giving privately or we can discuss making a Society donation. HelpHOPELive
has helped thousands of patients, families and communities nationwide raise nearly $80 million for out-of-pocket
transplant and injury-related expenses. Ninety-six cents of every dollar raised through HelpHOPELive fundraising
campaigns helps to pay for patients’ critical but uninsured medically related needs.
Barbara Pesek-CBRIS President
Culture
July, August, and September are the main months to dig and plant rhizomes in our area. Plant those DPIs that you
picked up at the picnic two weeks ago. Look for a garden spot that receives at least six hours of sun a day. Irises
prefer good drainage. Before you plant, you might want to amend your soil with 2-3 inches of good compost or other
organic product. The irises like a bit of oyster shell, also. Add a little bone meal or balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer at
the time of planting. Remember to not plant them deep. The top of the rhizome should barely be under the dirt and
the rhizomes spaced one to two feet apart. The roots begin to grow as soon as the rhizome is planted. Water 2-3
times weekly until three new leaves have grown, then cut down watering to once a week. You want to have good
root growth before the cold season
Also, it is time to divide those irises if you are going to do so this year. Usually we recommend withholding water for
two weeks before digging to force the rhizomes into dormancy. This year a week should do it with the drought
conditions that we are experiencing. Water a day before digging if the ground is very hard. Separate irises into
single fans (one rhizome) if they have five leaves, smaller rhizomes should be left attached to the “mother”. Replant
immediately if the weather is ‘normal’. Avoid planting new divisions during a “heat wave”. If the extremely hot
weather comes then some shade is beneficial – a shingle stuck in the ground next to the rhizome.
Bring some of the extra rhizomes to Sort Night so we can share!

Cummins You may have heard that Jim and Irene Cummins’ daughter Teresa just had a double lung transplant surgery. We are
grateful that the surgery was successful. Now the Cummins are faced with expensive after surgery care, much of
which is not covered by insurance (co-pays, deductibles, caregivers, travel, etc.) A fund HelpHOPELive has been set
up to benefit Teresa with these significant expenses.
I know the Cummins have a lot of friends at CBRIS so am hoping you can help in distributing this information
and the following form. It is a form that can be used for donations to HelpHOPELive, designating Teresa as the
beneficiary. Donations to HelpHOPELive are tax deductible.
Monterey Bay Iris Society has designated our August rhizome sales as fund raisers for Teresa. All proceeds
will go to HelpHOPELive. If anyone has extra rhizomes to donate, they can contact me. Not in competition to your own
sales, but EXTRA ones. Thanks for your help.
