Issue 7, Term 1, 28 April 2017
NAPLAN, 2017
During Week 3 of Term 2 Casino High School students
who are in Years 7 and 9 will undertake the NAPLAN
(National Assessment Program) with the other Years 7
and 9 students in all schools across Australia. On
Tuesday, 9th May, Language Conventions and Writing
will be worked. On Wednesday, 10th May there will be
a Reading assessment and on Thursday, 11th May
Numeracy will be undertaken. If students miss any of
these assessments they can undertake them on the
Catch-up Day, Friday, 12th May.
To enable students to work the Numeracy assessment
they need to bring a calculator to the hall on the
Thursday of Week 3. For some students this means
that they will need to purchase or borrow a calculator;
for all students it means that they need to check that
their calculator is working well – this will mean
checking that keys work and replacing batteries if
calculators are not working. Students, prepare your
calculator early and practise using it to solve
mathematical problems whenever possible.
It’s important that all students try hard when they
undertake the NAPLAN assessments so that parents
are aware of their child’s learning achievements in
aspects of literacy and numeracy development.
Students in Years 7 and 9 received a NAPLAN “Letter
to Parents” at the end of Term 1; if your child did not
receive the letter, please contact me for a copy that
outlines aspects of NAPLAN which are available for
parents’ information.
More details on our school’s organisation for Week 3
will be available during week 2 of term 2.
Thanks, Christine Bell,
Learning and Support Teacher.
Parents and Carers of Year 12 students are invited
to attend the Year 12 Academic Assembly
to be held on Monday 1 May, 2017
in the Len Walsh Hall at 12:15pm.
PERMISSION NOTES DUE FOR EVANS HEAD CROSS COUNTRY! Get out those running shoes, it’s that time of year again, our school Cross Country Carnival is just around the corner. The carnival will be held on Wednesday 3rd of May 2017 (next Wednesday) at Evans Head. Many students have already returned their permission notes, however; anyone who has not received one yet can pick one up from the PDHPE Staffroom or the Front Office. The cost of this excursion is $10.00 and this is to be paid at the Front Office by Friday 28th April. Signed permission notes also need to be returned to the Front Office by this date. Our Cross Country Carnival is not only a day for running or walking, we also have various activities in the afternoon held around the beach and river area. These include: fishing, canoeing, beach soccer, beach touch football, beach volleyball, beach cricket/frisbee/vortex, skate park, walking, swimming and sand modelling. So get your friends involved and join in for a fun day at Evans Head. Students are reminded to bring their hats, sunscreen and water bottles on the day. We hope to see you all there and look forward to your participation in a fun-filled day. Students not going to Evans Head will take part in a cross country run on the school grounds.

5 CENT FRIDAY - 5th MAY
We are holding a 5 Cent Friday on the 5th May as part of The Big Heart Project and in support of Love Your Sister.
Love Your Sister raises funds for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Connie Johnson (sister of Samuel Johnson, Gold
Logie winner), one of Australia’s best known cancer advocates, has terminal breast cancer and Samuel famously unicycled
around Australia after being dared by his sister in the name of awareness and medical research and set a world record.
Connie has this one last item on her bucket list, to break a world record of her own before the cancer gets her. Connie is
aiming to break the world record for the longest line of coins which currently stands at 75.4 kilometres. To break the record,
Connie needs to collect 3.951 million five cent coins. Connie will lay the coins in the shape of a massive love heart, visible
from space, in early May.
So as a school we are holding a 5 Cent Friday on the 5th May to show our support for the project and for Love Your Sister. We
need to collect as many 5 cent coins as possible leading up to the day and on the Friday we will put all the coins together in
the shape of a love heart. All coins are then donated to Love Your Sister and 100% of all coins received will be passed on to
the scientists at the Garvan Research Foundation.
So start collecting as many 5 cent coins as you can and bring them to school to be donated. SRC members will be going
around during Homeroom during the week to collect any 5 cent coins. Alternatively coins can be given to either Miss Robbins
or Miss Evenden.
