Hayley and Xavier were asked about their leadership roles and responsibilities and had an opportunity to see a live, operating radio studio. Their interview will be broadcasted on Coast FM on Tuesday 16th May at approximately 10:30 am.

CARES – Community and Education Bike Safety This week, Year 6 students participated in a Bike Education and Safety day at Palmdale. The CARES program was presented by NSW Police Officers and the students participated in an outdoor obstacle course to enhance basic cycle skills on a roadway cycle track. School Carpark Please do not park in the staff car park or enter the school through the staff car park. Car parks are very unsafe for children and there are frequent deliveries via the staff school car park each day. The school staff car park is for staff only. Also, the disabled carparks beside the gate near the scout hall are for visitors with disabled permits only, they are not a place to kiss and drop. Please ensure you are adhering to the road rules when picking up and dropping off your child, as the safety of our students is most important.

Build a Better Reader at Home Home reading is vitally important. Here are some tips to build a better reader.

Pick Good ‘Fit’ Books - A book that is a good match for your child should meet the following requirements:

Explain the purpose The book should be of interest The text can be understood The child can retell the story They know most of the words

For Beginning Readers Point out and read words in natural settings - stores, streets etc., memorise sight words Visualise the story in your head, ask questions before, during and after Don’t immediately tell an unknown word to your child, instead ask them to sound out the word, break the word into parts, try a different vowel sound Use illustrations for clues, skip the word Reread the sentence and go back - what word would make sense?

For Advanced Readers Notice interesting new vocabulary, and make it a challenge to use it in conversation Read with expression Explore non fiction books and their text features (diagrams, tables etc.) along with other genres as well Compare and contrast books, discuss connections to literature Think of new titles for books and explore multiple books from the same author

Infants Athletics Carnival Our Infants Athletics Carnival has been scheduled for Tuesday 23rd May at school. The Carnival will start at 11:30 am and parents are welcome to attend and have lunch with their child afterwards.

Great News Our Niagara Park family is expanding! Congratulations to Mrs Scott who is expecting the birth of her first child in December. We are very excited about her great news and we look forward to her new arrival.

5/6K Staffing

Unfortunately there will be a change of teacher on 5/6K as Miss Sheather has received a permanent

appointment at Brooke Avenue Public School. This has been a direct appointment from the Department

of Education and Miss Sheather will start at Brooke Avenue Pubic School next Monday.

We are very excited for Miss Sheather and wish her all the very best at her new school as a permanent

teacher. Miss Ella Searle has accepted the position on 5/6K and will be teaching the class for the

remainder of the year. We apologise for any disruption and we welcome Miss Searle to Niagara Park

Public School.

NAPLAN 2015 This week, Years 3 and 5 participated in the NAPLAN testing. Parents will receive student performance reports later in the year.

Year 4 Camp - Morisset Our Year 4 students are off to camp on Monday, 22nd May and will be returning on Tuesday 23rd May. All medical consent forms must be returned in order for students to attend. All payments should be finalised unless alternate arrangements have been made with the school. Students should be at school no later than 8:45 am on Monday morning. Anticipated return to school is approximately 2:20 pm on Tuesday. Parents will be updated via the school App and on Facebook if there is significant change to this time. Students have been provided a list of suggested items they will need to take on camp.

National Walk Safely to School Day Friday 19th May is ‘Walk Safely to School Day’. This is an opportunity for parents to re-visit road and commuter safety by walking or accompanying their children on their trip to school. The objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:

to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school aged children to promote health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits to help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to 10 years of age hold an adults hand when crossing the road to help children develop the vital road crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians to reduce car dependency to reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles to promote the use of public transport

Road safety and healthy lifestyle options are an integral component of our PD/Health/PE curriculum and are included in lessons taught K-6 throughout the year. We encourage all parents to support this important message by walking or accompanying your child or children to school on Friday 19th May and discussing safety issues with them.

Have a great weekend.

SPORTING SNIPPETS

NSW PSSA Tennis On Monday, 4 students headed off to play in the NSWPSSA Tennis Tournament. They were awesome in the first round and handily beat the team from Wyoming Public School. They came up against a much more experienced team from Gosford in the second round. After eight sets of unbelievable play, our team was beaten by the narrowest of margins in the end.

Their attitudes, efforts and sportsmanship were fantastic throughout both rounds and they proved themselves to be wonderful ambassadors for our school.

Congratulations Gabrielle, Molly, Harley and Ryhan on your amazing effort! It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day on the courts with you.

Brenda Gilmour Tennis Coordinator PSSA Boys Cricket – Round 1 Finally, after being rescheduled 3 times due to poor weather conditions, our Round 1 match against Valley View Public School was going ahead.

Last Thursday, we arrived at Patrick Croke Oval in Kincumber to a very eager opposition. After we lost the toss, we were forced to bowl/field first, which was what we had planned for anyway.

Bailey and Liam got off to a great start, jagging the wickets of the opening batsmen. Liam finished on 0/0 off 2 overs and Bailey 3/9 off 5 overs. Jesse and Will came on and each got a wicket. Will got his wicket even on his first ever ball bowled in a match! Jesse finished 1/1 off 2 overs and Will finished 1/3 off 1 over. Jaiden 0/4 off 2 overs. Keegan 0/0 off 3 overs. Jarrah 0/1 off 2 overs. Luke 0/6 off 1 over. Jett 0/3 off 1 over. Harry 0/4 off 2 overs. TJ 0/2 off 1 over. Jed 0/2 off 1 over. Harley 0/1 off 2 overs. They reached a total of 38 after 25 overs. 14 runs came off their bat, which meant we had lots of extras, but we can work on that at training.

Next, we came out to bat lead by Liam and Jesse. They managed to score to 6 before Liam (3) fell to a run out. Bailey (1) came in and helped Jesse get us to 10 before falling for 1 to a brilliant catch. Jarrah (3) then helped Jesse get us all the way to 21 after being run out. Harry batted well for his 2 runs, but helped us get over the line with Jesse ending up scoring 15 not out. We made their total in only 15 overs, nearly in half the time losing only 3 wickets.

Thanks again to Kylie Buckley for scoring again for Niagara Park Public School and to all the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who helped pack away our gazebos and transported our students to and from the game. Our next opponent in Round 2 will be either Empire Bay Public School or Umina Public School.
