PREP R TION
Plug in the monitor, turn on power, andconnect the cable if not already attached.
Connect the lead wires to the properposition and ensure that color-coded wiresmatch the color-coded cable.
Open the electrode package, and attach an
electrode to each lead wire.Expose the chest and the sites selected for
electrode placement.

PREP R TION
Using the rough patch on the electrode, adry washcloth, or gauze pad, each siteshould be rubbed briskly until it reddens.
Patients who are extremely hairy mayneed to be shaved prior to application ofthe electrodes. An alcohol pad is used toclean the sites in patients with oily skin.

PREP R TION
Apply one electrode to each site, pressone side of the electrode against the skin, and pull gently. Then, the opposite side
of the electrode should be pressed againstthe skin.
Press two fingers on the electrode in a
circular pattern to affix the gel andstabilize the electrode, then repeat foreach electrode.

AFTERCARE
Observe the monitor and evaluate the quality ofthe tracing and adjustments as needed.
Take an apical pulse and comparing the pulse to
the digital display. The upper and lower alarm limits should be set
according to institutional policy. Activate thealarm.
A rhythm strip should be recorded for the medicalrecord, and labeled with patient name, roomnumber, date, time, and interpretation of thestrip.

COMPLICATIONS
There is a potential for skin breakdown atthe electrode placement site. The patientmay be allergic to the adhesive used, or
the electrode may have been left on theskin too long. The electrodes should beremoved and new electrodes applied, using hypoallergenic electrodes ifnecessary.
