Thank You! CCCM and CCSA depend on the generous contributions of time and talent of many groups and individuals
who make our work relevant and dynamic. Thank you to all of you.
The Third Congress on the Pastoral Care of
International Students explored the role of
the Church in facilitating the holistic recep-
tion of international students into the com-
munity of faith and culture of their host
country, and celebrating the gifts of faith
and culture which these students bring with
them.
The delegates came from 36 countries:
bishops, priests, religious men and women,
lay campus ministers, members of various
national and international associations and
thirty students along with fraternal dele-
gates from other Christian denominations.
Canada was well represented and its dele-
gates were noticed for their active partici-
pation throughout the Congress. Our dele-
gation included: Fr. Daniel Renaud, OMI (St.
Paul’s University, Ottawa); Sr. Elaine Baete,
S.G.M, (St. Paul’s College Manitoba); Mr.
Gérard Byamungu (Ryerson University); Ms.
Katrina Laquian; (University of Victoria); Ms.
Janice Ryan (St. Thomas More University,
N.B) and Sr. Norma McDonald, CSC
(Université de Saint-Boniface).
The theme of the congress concerned inter-
national students and the meetings of cul-
tures. The discussions covered the follow-
ing topics: culture and gospel; the meeting
of cultures and its positive and challenging
outcomes; the meeting of cultures and
evangelization in school & university set-
tings; culture and education; and the need
for a specific pastoral approach towards
the care of international students.
Four of our delegates also took the initia-
tive to meet with a specialist in political
affairs at the Canadian Embassy to the Holy
See. We sent general information about
CCCM, CCSA and IMCS, as well, a draft
copy of the program of the Congress prior
to our interview.
The CCCM campus ministers are now im-
plementing their experiences gained
through the congress to help in the pastoral
care of internal students in their universi-
ties. Canadian campuses have an esti-
mated 103,000 International students
studying in universities across Canada,
consisting of 10% of the student popula-
tion.

Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry (CCCM) is a national network
of professional Catholic campus ministers, grounded in the tradi-
tion of the Roman Catholic Church, inspired by the vision of Vatican
II. CCCM exists to bring the Gospel of Christ to the academic world
through a national network; the ministry of the National Coordina-
tor and the Board; publications, programs and other means of
sharing resources; national and regional Campus Ministers’ and
Students’ conferences. CCCM has its roots in the early Catholic
Colleges in Canada, dating back over 200 years. His Eminence
Cardinal McGuigan was its first Episcopal moderator in 1946. The Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops (CCCB) named the first National Chaplain in 1948. The Canadian Catho-
lic Student Association (CCSA) is intrinsically linked to the CCCM by history, mission and
spirit. It is a member of one of the oldest international student movements, the Interna-
tional Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS). CCCM is recognized as a private lay associa-
tion of the faithful by the CCCB (2011).

Congratulations Lori!
Catholic Students Week 2012! This past February, Catholic university students from across Canada participated in
the national Catholic Students’ Week, from February 4th-12
th. Catechesis, liturgy and
mission were explored through events which included Theology on Tap, presentations by
bishops and chaplains, praise and worship, social justice workshops, 100-mile meals,
Taizé prayer services, and Eucharistic celebrations. More than 200 events were planned
on 35 campuses, including campus collaborative events with groups such as Knights of
Columbus, Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, religious com-
munities, Catholic Christian Outreach, Catholic Women’s Leagues, L’Arche, and local
parishes and diocesan offices.
Catholic Students’ Week is organized annually by the Canadian Catholic Students’ Asso-
ciation (CCSA) and the Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry (CCCM), sister organizations
initially founded as the Canadian Newman Movement in 1946.
Madeline Montoya, a member of the Ryerson Catholic Student Association (CSA), relates,
“Catholic Students’ Week makes me feel strengthened in my faith. As I help other CSA
members set up and promote these events, I feel like the light of the Holy Spirit is work-
ing with us, wanting to light other lamps as well.”
One of the great chal-
lenges of any univer-
sity community is
bringing about unity
from the rich diver-
sity that exists within
and around campus.
Today’s campus is a
rich mixture of ages,
cultures, socio-
economic back-
grounds, perspectives, approaches and
theologies. Even within a particular relig-
ion, different theologies and approaches
can prove challenging for ministers and
ministries existing on campuses. How-
ever, diversity should not be an obstacle
for the Catholic Church, for it has long
held together under the tenets of the
Gospel, its Tradition, and the many
charisms which belong to the people of
God.
In this spirit, CCCM brought together, for
a second time in 2012, representatives
of some of the many ministries, move-
ments and organizations that exist on
Canadian university/college campuses.
Using the model for Comprehensive
Campus Ministry, participants in the
roundtable discussion were able to iden-
tify the strengths of the many organiza-
tions and better understand the comple-
mentary nature of the diversity of Catho-
lic campus ministries represented by the
organizations present.

2011 NATIONAL CONFEERENCE 25th - 29th, 2011, Halifax
The Journey of Discipleship:
Many Paths, One Mission
May 24/25-29th
2012 Quebec Francophone Initiative
Hosted by: St. Mary’s
& Dalhousie University
From May 18th to 25th, the National Coordinator made a trip through Quebec visiting the
Campus Ministers at: Montreal Newman Center, Concordia University, Université du Qué-
bec à Montréal, Université Trois-Rivières and Université Laval. The purpose of the visit was
to become more familiar with the campus ministry situation in Québec and try to nurture
greater bonds of collaboration between CCCM and our francophone partners in Québec.
Throughout most of the trip, the National Coordinator was extremely lucky to have had the
hospitality and guidance of Ptre. Georges Croteau, s.g. As a result of this trip, the National
Coordinator, in partnership with Ptre. Georges, are planning to organize a day encounter at
Trois-Rivières amongst the francophone campus ministers in early October. This will pro-
vide francophone campus ministers the opportunity to build relationships amongst them-
selves and discuss the situation of campus ministry within the social and cultural context of
Québec. More information will soon follow, stay tuned!
Montée Jeunesse Montréal - 2012 From May 18th - 21st, 2012, the Montée Jeunesse Youth Summit took place in Montréal,
Québec. On Saturday evening about 400 young people, accompanied by Archbishop Lépine
of Montréal, Auxiliary Bishop Dowd of Montréal, Archbishop Lacroix of Québec City, and
Archbishop Prendergrast of Ottawa, took part in a Eucharistic procession which started at
St. Joseph’s Oratory and cut right through the heart of downtown Montréal arriving at the
Cathedral, Mary Queen of the World. McGill Newman Center students, accompanied by
their campus minister Terrel Joseph, played important roles in the conference by animating
prayer services and providing supporting services at the various events.
CCCM’s Halifax 2011 was a time of moving forward with professional
recognitions, integrating new campus ministers, and “the journey of the
disciple: many paths, one mission.” Showers from the Halifax sky wel-
comed all the CCCM conference attendees, but serene sunny rays sent
forth all the participants back to their campuses with new horizons of
being.
Moments of personal and team enrichment multiplied during the conference. We mean-
dered through instances of renewal. Talk sessions, group discussions, prayer awakenings,
report assessments, field trips, and meals together all brought us to seal our goals, pur-
poses, and meanings of who we were as we offered pastoral presence in Canada from
coast to coast . Whether in one mission or in diverse paths, Halifax 2011 directed our at-
tention to how we, as CCCM members, work towards uplifting and sustaining life on our
campuses across Canada.

Communications Committee
Global Connections
At the CCCM Annual Conference 2011 in Halifax, the membership requested a renewed energy be put
towards our communication strategies. Through the use of Survey Monkey, membership strongly em-
phasized updating our website.
In April the committee selected Madfatter Inc to revamp our web presence. We will present design tem-
plates to our membership at our AGM at Yale in June 2012. Madfatter Inc is committed to completing
this project by September 2012.
CCCM members, partners and collaborators are invited and encouraged to send pictures, event informa-
tion and other resources to the National Coordinator for the CCCM webpage at [email protected].
CCSA has chosen to use other forms of social media for their communication. Links will be provided on
the web page for the CCSA student blog which has been very active.
Committee Members: Sr. Sue Kidd, CND, Fr Paul Anyidoho (Concordia University), Kyle Ferguson
(National Coordinator), Sr. Sue Kidd, CND (UPEI) as chair, Janet Loo (Kings University College), Michael
MacLean (St Thomas More College).
The Global Connections committee remains an active group within CCCM. Every month,
the group speaks by telephone to share ideas on social justice initiatives across cam-
puses. Once again, the committee promoted awareness of social justice issues
throughout Catholic Student Week , and organized the annual service trip to Cuer-
navaca, Mexico, where students learn about the social, economic, and cultural currents
affecting Latin America. Sr. Elaine Baete, from St. Paul’s College, Manitoba, accompa-
nied two students: Manila Tanafranca from St. Mary’s University and Claudia Muller
Moran from St. Paul’s. The committee is currently writing grant applications to help
defray students costs for next year.

The work of the professional standards committee is continuing by engag-
ing new campus ministers joining CCCM and holding frequent conference
calls with our committee members. A new objective for our committee this
year is to reach out to an outside organization to provide a second look at
the applications we are accrediting. This recommendation was received by
the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities of Canada (ACCUC) in
April 2012, so to ensure the integrity and transparency of our accreditation
process. Our committee was happy to receive this recommendation from
the ACCUC and is moving forwards with its implementation.
