Janine Bajus guides you through the yarn rainbow as you pick colors, speed swatch, and Design your own Fair Isle sweater. With a palette of over 200 colors, you can paint a picture to rival any dream.

Franklin Habit reveals keys to understanding, knitting, and designing masterpieces in Lace Unlocked: An odyssey to the heart of the art. Heirlooms are an investment in creativity and effort—come begin yours.

Shannon and Jason Mullett-Bowlsby introduce the simple hand stitching, creative piecing, and universal appeal of the Japanese tradition of mending and quilting in Boro: From rags to riches.

Lily Chin inspires and instructs you to explore Elements of Design: knit and crochet for well-fitting sweaters. Fit, fashion, fun—Lily has you covered.

Natalie Redding sets up studio for intensive fiber and color exercises in The Redding Method: Intro to professional yarn dyeing. You’ll make luxurious yarns even more luscious with techniques, tools, and tricks used by many indie-dyers.

Camp STITCHES is the placefor at-your-own-pace, relaxed-but-intensive learning.

The Camp STITCHES experience is like no other — a 15-hour class format with plenty of time to bond and share with like-minded fiber folk — where enthusiastic instructors roll up their sleeves to share and explore a fiber craft alongside you.

Spend the weekend exploring lace, Fair Isle, dyeing, knit or crochet garment design, or hand stitching with our stellar line-up.

The fun begins on Thursday evening. Plan to arrive in time for a get-acquainted gathering at 8 pm. Classes meet from 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 on Friday and Sunday and from 9 to 12 on Saturday. Saturday afternoon is left open for sightseeing, shopping, or spending more quality time with yarn! We share breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, and afternoon snacks.

The infinite color possibilities in Fair Isle knitting can be intimidating!

We begin by discussing the use of color in Fair Isle knitting, color theory, and helpful resources; continue with an exercise in value recognition; and plunge into the process of identifying the colors in your inspiration source. Then it’s time to build your palette and see how the colors work together. Janine brings all 212 colors of Jamieson’s Shetland for hands-on “speed swatching!”

Spend day two choosing motifs and knitting them in your colors. You may bring charts, create your own in the workshop, or re-color one.

The focus on day three is construction and the fit issues specific to Fair Isle-type garments. Steeks, corrugated ribbing, adding bands, and purl-when-you-can borders are discussed and demonstrated.

As swatching continues, we will address color and pattern issues and solve problems as they emerge.

This workshop covers a lot of ground: by the end of the three days, you will be well on your way to finalizing your own Fair Isle garment pattern.

You must have experience with 2-color stranded knitting (or be willing to practice before the workshop) and you must have completed a sweater or vest (of any kind).

Materials fee: $40 covers Shetland yarn for extensive swatching, journals, bag, and 28-page handout.

For Janine Bajus, it all started with the gift of a colorful Fair Isle cardigan from Shetland in 1964. Today playing with color remains the theme of her fiber life, and she teaches workshops introducing others to the joys of modern Fair Isle knitting. To quote her book, The Joy of Color: Fair Isle Knitting Your Way, “Her goal is to provide the information that people need to knit their own stranded garments, whether traditional or wild, subdued or saturated, from a pattern or self-designed.” Janine lives in Berkeley, California, surrounded by books and fiber.

Interested in designing knit or crochet garments for yourself? Let’s go beyond the basics and explore the essentials and fine points of design.

The design process can start anywhere, and I find INSPIRATION everywhere— in art and fashion, theory and concept, stitch and yarn.

Fashion is about reality. We’ll begin with a review of 20th century fashion and see how it reflects the times.

Fashion is about illusion! It can be a strong tool for self-expression. Learn to hide or reveal yourself through that illusion. Consider the SILHOUETTE as you plan a garment. View the PROPORTIONS and how they influence your SHAPE—should you alter them? Flatter your figure with EASE and FIT. It all works together.

Step-by-step instructions help you construct a mini-SLOPER— a paper representation of your body. By overlaying drawings on the sloper, you can experiment with COLOR and COMPOSITION and see what does or doesn’t work, well before putting needles or hooks to yarn.

Get a feel for how YARN and STITCHES work together to create fabric. For optimum results, match the fabric to the garment.

Lastly, translate your ideas into stitches and rows, a construction plan, and a workable chart for sweater shaping. Learn the “cheats” that can ensure proper fit.

Ultimately, all elements will come together in a flattering garment for YOU!

Lace Unlocked: An odyssey to the heart of the art

MAY 31–JUNE 4, 2018

Lace has been called the pinnacle of knitting, raising the craft to its highest potential. This fascinating, in-depth workshop will discuss (and practice) each aspect of its creation including: the history of lace knitting and its development in different times and places; the choice of tools and materials; the structure of knitted lace fabric; the creation of stitch motifs; and methods for planning new designs or modifying ones that already exist. We will look closely at antique and modern master-

pieces and try our hands at mak-ing our own, with each student choosing her or his own path of study. If you have enjoyed work-ing from lace patterns, but only dreamt of creating your own; or if you just love lace and would like to understand what lies beneath the pretty surface, “Lace Unlocked” is for you.

Students must be fluent in lace knitting, in-cluding reading and working from lace charts; this is not a “learn-to-knit” class.

Designer, teacher, author, and illustrator Franklin Habit is the author of It Itches: A Stash of Knitting Cartoons and I Dream of Yarn: A Knit and Crochet Coloring Book. He travels constantly to teach knitters at shops and guilds across the country and internationally.

Learn to embrace imperfection and take your creative expression to new heights in this Camp STITCHES exclusive. Come with us and explore the exciting Japanese textile art of Boro! We’ll use the fabric piecing principles of Boro, the traditional Japanese mending and quilting technique, and associated Sashiko hand-sewing skills to elevate a stack of everyday rags to rich textiles that will adorn your home and wardrobe.

To say that Boro is just Japanese mending or quilting seems insufficient. But, in fact, it adapts perfectly to quilting: taking little pieces of fabric and sewing them together to make a new, larger piece of fabric! Boro garments, blankets, and household textiles were traditionally handed down for generations with each set of hands enhancing the scruffy-beauty of the magnificent textured fabric.

Fast forward to present day – these traditional Japanese mending and sewing techniques have been brought into the 21st Century by the sustainable fashion and slow stitching movements. Garments made from recycled fabrics pieced together using Boro and Sashiko walk down runways and fill boutiques while the blankets and fiber art pieces adorn homes around the world. Modern day makers, both novice and experienced, can’t deny the pleasure that comes from repurposing as they create.

Beginners encouraged – No experience necessary! Even if you have never done any hand sewing and never fused two pieces of fabric together with a needle and thread, this is the class for you! And, if you’ve always wanted to try but were intimidated by traditional quilting techniques, you’re going to love this class. This technique for creating

textiles is perfect for the maker who is ready to try something new and exciting.

In this class, we’ll use Boro techniques to create a whole new panel of unique fabric from seemingly unusable remnants and odd pieces. We’ll start by learning to “listen” to the scraps, deciding which types of fabrics and what shapes and sizes work best together in harmonious imperfection. After that, we’ll piece it all together and start the “little stabs” of Sashiko hand-sewing. By the end of the weekend, you will have a stunning new fabric that you can use by itself to enhance a favorite garment, accessory, or home décor item. You can also use your new textile creation as the basis for a larger project like a quilt top or throw.

Want to make your fabric even more special? Bring an old shirt, pair of jeans, old ties, or favorite fabric remnants and we’ll make them into scraps to work into your design! Note: solid, woven fabrics work best but even pieces of lace and crocheted or knitted motifs can be worked into the rich fabric of these textiles.

Have a garment that could use a little dressing up? Bring a pair of jeans that have worn through, a jacket that still fits but bores you and we’ll show you how to use your newly created fabrics and stunning stitching skills to take them from DRAB to FAB!

Join us and reignite your creativity – one stitch at a time.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite Indie dyers achieve some of their creatively colored yarns? Well, you can do it, too!

During this intensive workshop, you’ll learn theory and techniques to achieve your favorite colorways on protein- fiber yarns.

In the hands-on portion, you’ll dye yarns in the following methods:

• Saturated single color • Tonal • Variegated • Gradient • Glazed • Self-striping • Self-striping fade

Also as an added bonus, we will make a fringed scarf then dye it to see how simply one can dye a finished item.

Dyeing chemistry will be addressed in an easy-to-understand way which doesn’t include heavy mathematics or arduous calculations. Learn to figure out how each dye works, how to repeat colorways, and solve problems.

Exploring different options for studio set-ups, heat sources, dye supplies, and yarn characteristics will build the foundation you’ll use throughout your fiber-arts journey. Amateur or professional, Natalie is your guide, Camp STITCHES is your studio.

Materials fee: $160 covers nine 100-gram skeins of wools, silks, and blends; yarns for sampling; use of dyes and equipment.
