PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I sincerely thank you for conferring on me an opportunity to lead this renowned organization for a period of one year. My predecessors have taken Bombay Orthopaedic society (BOS) to such a high standard that just to maintain it , is a major task. However, I have a group of extremely competent and sincere colleagues as executive committee members and we will do our best to leave a lasting impression.
First of all, with the concurrence of president elect, Dr. Sudhir Warrier, I propose a two year project and call it 'BOS theme' and not 'President's theme' with the hope it does not end with my tenure in office but continues as a popular academic movement.
The theme 'Documentation and research for Indian soil' is aimed at writing up our clinical material. We have a sizable but unrecognized clinical material and the only way to put it up before the world audience is to publish it in established journals. This is an achievable task through organized, ongoing efforts.
Young and middle level orthopaedic surgeons would be encouraged to take up challenging research projects. Society's fund disbursement committee will be happy to help all credible proposals. I hope to see a significant contribution to international literature by BOS members.
We plan to start the movement with a two-day workshop titled 'PUBLISH & FLOURISH' that will kick start writing and publishing activities.
Bimonthly clinical meetings, Master course and other educational orthopaedic courses and last but not the least, Western India Regional Orthopaedic Conference (WIROC) are bastions of society's activities and I propose to make them more effective and meaningful.
Clinical Meetings - The attendance at the clinical meetings is dwindling and the issue was discussed in AGM. I propose to act to improve the situation by making some changes in the protocol .
3
Dr. Shubhranshu Mohanty, our vice president has gladly taken over the task of coordinating the clinical meetings. Some important modifications in the format of the meetings and their conduction have been finalized with the hope that the attendances will improve and discussions will be more lively and meaningful. I will elaborate these changes from time to time in the announcements for clinical meetings.
Master Series One of the most successful activities of BOS was started three years ago by Dr. Nicolas Antao and is a platform to discuss common topics threadbare.
Dr. Antao's astute selection of topics, his dedication to the concept, coupled with conveners' zealous teachings has made it a most 'sought after' event. Now there is a change of guard and another Guru is at the helm. Professor Vinod Laheri has agreed to take the Master series to newer heights .
Educational Courses – Dr. Sudhir Warrier, our President elect has taken on the responsibility of orchestration of various courses arranged by BOS. Under his direction, I am sure the enthusiastic and knowledgeable conveners will improve the standards and give everyone value for their money and time. We have requested all the conveners to keep a symposium on at least one day, open to all members to facilitate getting accreditation points for that course.
The event of the year – Western India Regional Conference (WIROC) is being organized by young and experienced duo, Dr. Amit Ajgaonkar and Dr. Abhay Nene. I am sure they will leave no stone unturned to give you 'something significant to carry home'. We soon will announce more details about WIROC.
Dr. Samir Dalvie, our enthusiastic secretary has begun the process of securing accreditation for our clinical meetings and other activities.
Before concluding, I reveal that webmasters, Drs. Taral Nagda and Niraj Bijalani are designing a massive update of our website as well as regular updating. I am sure, you all will get addicted to visit the site day after day.
Finally, I have a request to make do partake in BOS activities – please communicate; convey your suggestions and criticisms by email to BOS secretariat.
Yours truly,
Dr. Vikas AgashePresident, Bombay Orthopaedics Society

SECRETARY'S MESSAGE
Dear BOS Members,
Greetings from the secretary.
As I finish one year of my post and commence the second year, I use this opportunity to thank you for the honor and reflect on the past year, while looking forward to the next.
Our academic agenda remains at the forefront, and the Executive committee has taken steps to regulate, streamline and standardize our events. Clinical meetings and Master series are fairly well attended, however this year we will pay special attention to planning and publicizing these amongst the members. Our courses remain popular and we have guidelines and protocols to conveners to exceed our already high standards.
MMC CME credit points are important to us now. We are now accredited to hold CME’s, and all our clinical meetings, Master Series and courses should get CME points for faculty and delegates. Each program has to be submitted and approved separately, hence the points cannot be promised. Thus there is an additional reason for members to attend BOS academic programs.
We have taken a step toward making our society paperless as per wishes of the general body. Our website is now re-invented and empowered and will have all information of BOS at the click of a mouse. I invite you to visit www.bombayorth.org and see for yourself.
The Calendar of Events has been replaced by an online version, and all courses can be applied and paid for online. Communication will be mainly by email and we have around 600 members ID’s. Please register with us, as the plan is to almost do away with paper communication over the next few years. We also have a mass SMS facility, so do register your mobile numbers.
Social networking has come to BOS, and we now have a strong presence on Facebook, with our secretaries page and the BOS group, where we will share information about our events and the members can interact with each other.
I remain ever accessible to the members, and feel free to contact me by email [email protected] for any assistance.
Finally I thank all office bearers, conveners and most of all the 2 Presidents, Dr. Jhunjhunwalla and Dr. Agashe for all their support and guidance in running the Society.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Samir DalvieSecretary, Bombay Orthopaedics Society

Programme Details : We have planned a very informative and interactive spine workshop programme. This would provide a golden opportunity to the surgeons who want to refresh his knowledge of step ladder in spinal column as well as a very recent addition of update in spinal pathologies and surgeries. This is a sincere effort for all of us to bring our country at international level & match the best.
WHY A UNIQUE COURSE ?
Apart from introduction, pre-course evaluation and an interesting glimpse of evolution of spine surgery we would devote a valuable time in applied basics of spinal column. The minute details of clinical examination, imaging, applied anatomy, biomechanics and bio-physiology with its clinical significance would be discussed. Some dedicated time would be given for the importance of conservative care of the spine, role of blocks and epidurals. Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss and show their cases in Bombay spine club meeting on 16th evening. In this meeting we show interesting and difficult cases. Opinion is sought from the colleagues in specific situation for a particular case.
PILLAR OF THE WORKSHOP – FIX THE PILLAR:
A full day (18.09.11) is reserved for cadaveric hands on workshop, where delegates would practice the instrumentation on spinal column under the guidance of faculty members. We encourage the delegates to fully utilize this opportunity. We have the dedicated units for cadaver preservation which gives a feel of fresh body and almost mimics fixation in live.
LIVE THE LIVE SURGERIES:
From 19.09.11 to 23.09.11 delegates would observe different kinds of live spinal surgeries in different hospitals of Mumbai .
LECTURES AND MINI WORKSHOPS:
Each late afternoon and evening we would discuss important spinal pathologies and have mini workshop to show different spinal instrumentation systems. Though the programme appears exhaustive, it is going to be very rich in its content and quality. The programme has reached to this level after long years of hard work of senior members of Bombay Orthopaedic Society.
