The proj ct. which WOIl the 1 92 com-petition Ior the new headquarters ofCaja General de AbOtTOS, the eity'smost important bank, is located in therather nondescript urban fringee, sothe int ntion was al 0 to create a land-markbuilding in that part of the city.

To solve the problems posed. by thesloping site, a bas providing parkingspace and room for the bank to expandinto is fitted between the two roadsLhatdefine the lot. Above the. base, thecube-shaped sterotomic volume basedon a :~x 3 m reinforced concrete gridframe serve to collect light, which isthe principal theme of the design. Thetwo south-facing facades act as brise-soleils to soft n the strong M diterra-nean light that illurninat ~ the open-plan \....ork areas. The two oppositeracemes, where th e o ffice s are sited,have horizontal stan a 1 1 ( 1 glas inlilland rec ive uniform, unvarying light
