Louis KuchtaLouis George Kuchta, 82 years

of age, of Greenfield, Calif., passedaway Sunday, May 9, 2010, at TheRidge, Salinas,Calif.

Louis was bornJune 9, 1927, inScotland, S.D., toJohn and Bozana(Kolda) Kuchta. Hegraduated fromYankton SeniorHigh School in1944. He drovetransit bus inSioux City, Iowa. Also, he workedat the packing plant in Sioux City,Iowa.

Louis then enlisted and servedin the U.S. Army. He met Lorraine(Kautz) in California while in thehospital, and she was his nurse.They were married in 1953, settledin California and had three daugh-ters. Lorraine passed on in 1978.

In 1983, Louis married his wife,June. She passed away in 2004.

Louis worked as an operatingengineer for Granite Rock untilretiring.

We want to thank everyone thathad been a part of his life; especial-ly his dear family, and many friendsin the community of Greenfield,Calif. Many thanks to the wonderfulstaff at The Ridge in Salinas, Calif.

Louis is survived by threedaughters: Debbie (Murray) Metgeof Great Falls, Mont., Kathy Lisle ofOjai, Calif., and Susy Friedrich ofSalinas, Calif.; two brothers: HarryKuchta of Arroyo Seco, Calif., andLloyd F. Kuchta of Yankton, S.D.;one brother-in-law: Bernie Sandersof Tyndall, S.D.; six grandchildrenand many nieces and nephews.

Louis was preceded in death byhis parents, John and Bozana; wife,Lorraine; second wife, June; broth-

er, Paul J. Kuchta; sister, DorothyM. Rehurek-Sanders, brother-in-lawRay Rehurek; five sisters-in-law:Carm Kuchta, Lorraine Kuchta,June Kuchta, Florence Kuchta andDarlene Kuchta.

Edward Austad, 45, of Vermillion,SD. passed away suddenlySaturday, June 19, 2010.

Jim was born September 20,1964 in Sioux City, IA, the son of thelate Larry Austad and Velma(Stotz) Austad. In 1982 Jim marriedKim (Sauceda) Dean and of thatunion, four children were born. Heremarried in January of 2008 toMelany (Borgman) Austad. Jim hasbeen a lifelong resident of the ElkPoint/Vermillion area.

He earned his Bachelor of Artsdegree in Mass Communicationfrom the University of SouthDakota. He worked at several occu-pations including his work with LGEverist railroad and as a welder. Healso joined the Air Force in 1982until 1985.

Some of the things he enjoyedthe most were his family andfriends. He loved old cars andtrucks — Fords of course. He wasvery proud of his old camper andpainted it “Ford Blue”. He liked sit-ting around with friends and telling

stories. He had many, many storiesand could make anyone laugh. Headored Bull Dogs and found a com-panion in his beloved Abby. Hefound delight in spoiling his grand-daughter Grace. He enjoyed treas-uring antique Coke collectibles.

Jim is survived by his wifeMelany, one son ChristopherAustad of Sioux Falls, three daugh-ters, Elizabeth (Eric) Olson ofPlattsmouth, NE one granddaugh-ter Grace Olson, Ashley Austad andsignificant other Jeff of Sioux City,IA, Kayla Austad and significantother Kevin of Papillion, NE, twostep-sons Christopher and David ofVermillion, SD, his mother VelmaAustad of Elk Point, SD, one sisterTammy Austad and significant

other Jim of Elk Point, twonephews Alexander and JacobSpeirs and one granddaughter onthe way.

He was preceded in death by

his father Larry Austad, his grand-parents John and Blanche Stotz,grandfather Stanley Austad.

Linda Esther (Grosz) Bauder wasborn on Saturday, February 10, 1917near Scotland to Emil and Minnie(Friederich) Grosz. Linda was bap-tized and confirmed in the Lutheranfaith. She attended school in Trippand graduated from Scotland HighSchool. On September 1, 1942, shemarried Edgar Bauder. They farmedsouth of Scotland until 1970 when

they retired to Scotland. She was anactive member of Zion LutheranChurch, a member of WELCA, thequilting group, taught Sundayschool and was in charge of theCradle Roll from 1972 until 1996.Linda became a resident of theGood Samaritan Society of Scotlandin 2001, and it is there that shepassed away on Sunday, June 20,2010 at the age of 93 years, 4months, 10 days.

She will be missed by her daugh-ter, Carol Weisz of Sioux Falls; sonGeorge (Paula) Bauder of Scotland;

five grandchildren: Kristi (Jeff)Landborg, Brian Weisz and friendPeggy Rathjen, John (Bridget)Weisz, all of Sioux Falls and Cheri(Lee) Wittmeier of Tyndall and Ryan(Kelli) Bauder of Scotland; and fourgreat-grandchildren: Clay and LaceyWittmeier and Emma and ColeWeisz.

Linda was preceded in death byher husband in 2002, her parents,stepfather, three brothers and son-in-law, Don Weisz.

Harvey John Schnabel wasborn Wednesday, June 29, 1932 inHutchinson County near Tripp,South Dakota to Otto and Helen(Heinrich) Schnabel. He graduat-ed from Tripp High School in 1950.He served in the U.S. Army from1953-1955 during the KoreanConflict. Following his militaryservice, Harvey returned to the

area where he farmed for over 50years. Harvey was married toEldora Neth on March 4, 1956 inTripp. She passed away onDecember 9, 1996. Harvey marriedJackie Koch on November 15, 2003in Tripp. Harvey was a member ofEmmaus Lutheran Church wherehe served as a church elder. Heserved on the boards of theFarmer’s Elevator of Tripp and theGerman Township Board and wasa member of the Jelken-HarmsAmerican Legion Post #142. Hisfavorite pastimes were spendingtime with his grandsons and hav-ing coffee with friends. He alsoenjoyed farming, traveling andmusic. Harvey entered the GoodSamaritan Society of Tripp onJune 16, 2010 and passed away onSaturday, June 19, 2010 at the ageof 77 years, 11 months, and 21days.

Harvey is survived by his wife,Jackie of Tripp; a son, JohnSchnabel of Tripp; a daughter,Jane (William) Lyons of SiouxFalls; and three grandsons:Derrick Schnabel, Kyle Lyons, andMatthew Lyons; five step-children:Laura (Karl) Lapka of Estherville,Iowa, Debra (Kerry) McMillan ofVictoria, Minnesota, Julie (Bob)Sebert of Mitchell, Barbara(Steve) Miller of Rapid City, andDaniel Koch of Rapid City; thir-teen step-granddaughters, onestep-grandson, and three step-great-grandchildren; and two sis-ters: Norma (Clifford) Konrad ofKaylor and LaRue Heinert ofMitchell.

He was preceded in death byhis first wife, Eldora and an infantdaughter, Cindy.

Viola Lorraine (Wentz) BreenBauder was born on Wednesday,September 19, 1923 on a farmthree miles east of Scotland toRobert and Bertha (Goecken)Wentz. She was baptized andconfirmed, both in German, inthe Evangelical ReformedChurch in Scotland by Rev. UlrichZogg. She attended elementaryschool and graduated fromScotland High School in 1941.She attended the Sacred HeartHospital School of Nursing inYankton and completed herRegistered Nurse examination.On September 19, 1944, her 21stbirthday, Viola was united inmarriage to Lawrence Breen ather parents’ home in Scotland.Lawrence died in March of 1983in Winner. She married JohnBauder on June 2, 1987 at theFirst Lutheran Church in SiouxFalls. John died in July of 1992 inYankton.

During Vi’s long and accom-plished career as a nurse, shebecame a Certified Nurse AideInstructor in 1965, a CertifiedRestorative Nursing Instructor in1968, and became licensed as aNursing Home Administrator in1974. In 1980, she completed aBachelor’s Degree in AlliedHealth Care from Mount MartyCollege. She served in many clin-ical positions throughout theMidwest, and earned numerouscitations and awards for herachievements in the nursingfield. She was instrumental inestablishing hospital and nursinghome auxiliaries in severaltowns, including the auxiliary forLandmann-Jungman MemorialHospital in Scotland. In additionto her nursing career, Vi was anactive member of the communi-ties in which she lived. She was amember of the ScotlandDevelopment Group, theScotland Historical PreservationSociety, the Scotland Civic Club,Scotland Senior Citizens, SodakStamm for Germans from Russia,Life Enrichment for the Elderly(LEE), and the VFW andAmerican Legion Auxiliaries. Shealso devoted many years to theGirl Scouts, Boy Scouts and vari-ous church offices. Viola passedaway on Thursday, June 17, 2010at the Good Samaritan Society ofScotland at the age of 86 years, 8months, 29 days.

Viola is survived by one son,Bob (Mona) Breen of Tempe,Arizona; a step-daughter, PaulineFinck of Tripp; four step-sons:Marvin (Dianne) Bauder ofTyndall, Duane (Shari) Bauder ofYankton, Rev. Larry (Kaye) Jerkeof Mitchell and Norman (Marva)Jerke of Madison; three grand-children, thirteen step-grandchil-dren, three great-grandchildrenand fifteen step-great-grandchil-dren; three brothers-in-law andseven sisters-in-law.

In addition to her parents, Viis preceded in death by a broth-er, Allen Wentz; her daughter,Jean Olson; and her first and sec-ond husbands, Lawrence Breenand John Bauder.

Kathleen was born on August28, 1934 to John and Bertha(Trottnow) Schenk in Menno,South Dakota. She was baptizedon November 16, 1934 into theLutheran faith. On May 19, 1953,Kathleen graduated from MennoHigh School. She was united inmarriage to Leroy Mettler onAugust 26, 1953 in Menno and tothis union two sons were born,Rick and Darus. For 10 years, sheworked at Mettler Hardware

Store and for thenext 26 years, sheworked at theMenno PublicSchool as ateacher’s aide.She was a mem-ber of GraceLutheran Churchand the GraceLutheran LadiesAid. In her spare

time, Kathleen enjoyed spendingtime with her family and friends,writing poetry, working with chil-dren, collecting, gardening, cook-ing, candy making and her dogs.

Those who will cherish hermemory are her two sons: RickMettler of Lincoln, NE and Darus(Laura) Mettler of Norfolk, NE; 7grandchildren and her nieces andnephews.

She was preceded in death byher husband, Leroy, her parentsJohn and Bertha, and her 4 sis-ters: Mildred Hehn, PhyllisWilcoxon, Lorraine Hehn, andRamona Schenk.
