Fr. Mahoney’s Message
Burlington Catholic
Dear Burlington Catholic Collaborative,
We are coming close to the end of the Liturgical Year. The readings over the next couple of weeks prepare us to think about end-times. In today’s Gospel we see an encounter between Jesus and some Sadducees. Sadducees and Pharisees were two different parties within Judaism. Pharisees believed in the resurrection, Sadducees did not. That is why they are “Sad-you-see”. In this passage they are trying to disprove the concept of resurrection using marriage laws. The Sadducees argued against resurrection and new life after death because of the limits of earthly existence. They did not imagine another possibility for existence and relationship with God. For Jesus, an eternal relationship, new life, with God is possible, for God is the God of the living. For God, all are alive. Jesus makes it clear that life after death is not just an extension of this life. What happens after death is a transformation that we can't even imagine. How wonderful is that! Veterans Day – this Friday, November 11. World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles in France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” It was originally called “Armistice Day.” Years later after World War II and Korea, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. Please remember in your prayers all veterans, both living and dead, and pray also for peace among all nations. Thank you to all our veterans! Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We will participate in two “Thanksgiving Services” the last week of November. The first one will be an Inter Faith Service being help at the Temple Shalom Emeth at 16 Lexington Street on Monday evening, November 25. The other Thanksgiving Service will
be Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Parish being offered for our Collaborative. I am a firm believer that gratefulness is the heart of all prayer. Please come and offer your gratitude to the Lord at one or both of these Services. The Joint Parish Council met Last Sunday to discuss and recommend to me a New Mass Schedule. They have been working very hard on this. I am very proud of their work and I thank them. We discussed the committee’s recommendations from our last meeting and I shared with them my concerns with one of the recommendations and the discussions that were shared to go to a 5 Weekend Mass Schedule for the Collaborative. I would much prefer to go from 7 Masses to 6 Masses for now. When clergy assignments change in the future (i.e. if Fr. Mark is transferred some years from now and not replaced, or Fr. Fabian and/or Fr. Conroy are no longer available), we would need to go to 5 or 4 Mass Schedule scenario for the Collaborative. For now, I have accepted the unanimous recommendation of the entire Joint Parish Council (about 30 members in total) to institute 6 Masses for the Collaborative beginning the first Weekend of the New Year, January 4/5, 2020. The ONLY change to the current Weekend Mass Schedule will be to create a New 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Margaret by combining the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Masses. The rest of the Mass schedules for both parishes remain the same. The Mass Time Committee has prepared a 2 page summary of how they got to their recommendation as well as a plan for the future when we will have to go to a 5 Mass scenario should the need arise. That summary is inserted on a separate page in today’s bulletin. I have also accepted the unanimous recommendation of the entire Joint Parish Council to discontinue the 6:45 a.m. Daily Mass. The last 6:45 a.m. daily Mass will be celebrated on January 3, 2020. That having been said – we WILL re-institute the 6:45 a.m. Mass during the entire season of Lent and for Holy Days of Obligation. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

HELPING THOSE IN NEED As part of the 2019 St. Margaret’s Giving Tree Project, we wish to assist our parish families who find themselves in need during the upcoming Christmas
Season. Please telephone your requests to Joanne at 978-439-0017.
ST. MALACHY YEAR END COLLECTION Two weekends ago the St. Malachy financial council shared the income and expenses of the parish. The weekly offertory is the money we need to manage our budget. It supports not only administrative, salaries, utilities and maintenance but the dollars are also for music, outreach within the community, our youth and support of ministries. For the past few years we have implemented a year end offertory. This money has been used for snow removal, additional heating costs depending on our upcoming winter. Last week we sent a letter and a return envelope for the Year End Collection, if you did not receive this in the mail then you are not listed in our registration. Please contact the rectory at 781-272-5111 to register. These Year End envelopes are available at all entrances of the church. In advance, thank you for your generosity, your commitment and your faith in keeping Saint Malachy a thriving parish.
CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP The next gathering of the Catholic Men's Fellowship will take place on Thursday, November 14th from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Meeting Room of St. Margaret’s Rectory. For information about the Men’s Fellowship, please contact Ken Carey at 617-840-0225.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK “Is there anyone sick among you?” This question is found in the New Testament Letter of St. James and encourages that the sick should call for the priests of the Church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to call upon our parish priests to ask for prayer and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with serious illness. This Sacrament is not to be looked upon as the "Last Rites" but as a powerful instrument of God's healing presence. Please avail yourself of this gift! Also, if someone is dying or near death, please notify the Parish Office for pastoral assistance.

Burlington Catholic 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time Faith is our belief in God. Religion is the way we express it and theology is the way we explain it. So says the pastor. What is remarkable is that all three are interconnected. What we do in liturgy affects what we believe and how we explain it influences our faith. They are not three separate entities, but different aspects of our relationship with God. It makes a difference what religion we practice, how we practice it and how we explain it. Jesus debates the Sadducees on their own terms. They do not believe in the resurrection or life after death. Using Scripture, Jesus deflects their question and focuses on what they have overlooked. God is the God of the living, proven by the words of Moses. God is in relationship with all His people, living and deceased. It is easy to get lost in theological debate, trying to figure out if God exists, why evil happens and what will happen next. But all the reasoning in the world does not reveal God. Faith is more a matter of the heart than of the mind. There comes a moment where we make a ‘leap of faith,’ when faced with all the evidence, teaching and experience we have, we make a choice to believe in God and trust Him at His Word. In our relationship with God, we experience His love and His Presence. Live confidently in His love. In His own time, God will answer all our questions.
~James Gaffney
LESSONS AND CAROLS The Burlington Catholic Collaborative invites you to be part of a “Lessons and Carols” service on Sunday December 15 at 5pm, at St Margaret’s. The service tells the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus in nine short Bible readings or lessons from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns. Please consider joining us to sing in this moving service, no choir experience is necessary, the music should be familiar to most. Aside from the performance, there will be one dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 14 at 1:30pm and a choir rehearsal on Thursday December 12 at 7pm. Contact Bill Donahue, Music Director at [email protected] or 508-451-8083 with any questions or to participate. This is a powerful way to celebrate Advent and the coming of Christ at Christmas.

A PRO-LIFE GIFT TO OUR COLLABORATIVE
The Movie: Unplanned. What she saw changed everything. Unplanned is the inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of transformation. All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in. Until the day she saw something that changed everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers in America. A Parishioner generously donated two copies of the movie and the book to our Collaborative. Please call either rectory to sign up to borrow the book and/or the movie and watch it at home with family and friends.
THANK YOU Thank you to all who contributed to Heartbeat through the Baby Bottle Fundraiser to help save lives and assist needy families who have chosen life for their children. The total of funds raised was just over $6300. We greatly appreciate your generosity and caring! Over four hundred babies have been born since the first of the year to families we are assisting. This is a major increase from 2018! We also continue to provide help for many families from previous years. Providing for so many needy families is challenging and costly! Providing for each needy family having a baby costs close to $300. Though our funds are still at a crisis level, the proceeds from the fundraiser are a tremendous help! Your donations are effectively and prudently used to help needy families. We are grateful to God and to all who donated! Your prayers and support help us to share God’s love and accomplish a great deal! The moms are very grateful when they receive the items their children need! God Bless all of you! Pregnant or new moms needing assistance should call 781-229-7887 or email us at [email protected]. Special thanks to Dan and Judy Sweeney and Pat Harris, all the adult volunteers and the many religious education students at St. Margaret Parish for their work in running the fundraiser!
Throughout the Month of November - ‘The Month of the Holy Souls’ - St. Margaret and St. Malachy Parishes will display a special “Book of Remembrance” in their churches. Parishioners are welcome to inscribe the names of their deceased loved ones in these books being assured that their departed relatives and friends will be remembered in the prayers of our faith communities.
May the souls of the faithful departed, rest in eternal peace.
