BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 2013-2014 SEASON8
Letter from the President & CEO
The Bakersfi eld Symphony Orchestra has performed Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet for 35 years along with the Civic Dance Center and are proud to bring this wonderful performance to you for the 36th season. December is a magical time with the holiday spirit in the air. Making the BSO Nutcracker performance an annual tradition adds to a fantastic holiday season.
It is truly amazing that the BSO has enchanted audiences since 1977, however what is more intriguing is the fact we have our very own professional orchestra and local children and adult dancers
perform each year. We have about 50 professional orchestra musicians, 190 dancers, and well over 100 people supporting from behind the scenes in various capacities. This is the largest local musical production held in Bakersfi eld.
The Bakersfi eld Symphony Orchestra continues to bring great concerts to our community and music education to the young people of Kern County. Since only 1/3 of our revenue comes through ticket sales, we rely on our generous donors and sponsors to accomplish our mission. Please consider the BSO as you support organizations which help improve the quality of life here in Bakersfi eld with a gift of $100 or more.
We would also like to keep you updated with news, information, and promotions regarding the BSO through our email newsletter, Facebook posts, and visits to our website at www.BSOnow.org. You may provide your information with the contact forms located in the lobby.
Enjoy the performance and thank you for supporting the BSO.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
It is Christmas Eve in Nuremberg, the city of toys. Governor and Mrs. Silberhaus are having a party and their children, Clara and Fritz, are excited to be allowed to stay up past their usual bedtime. They scamper about as their parents greet arriving guests.
Clara and Fritz play host and hostess for their friends. The children dance and play games. Everyone is excited about the gifts under the tree, wondering which gift is theirs.
To the surprise of the children, a very special guest arrives: Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather. Drosselmeyer builds mechanical toys and clocks and has created some wondrous toys for the party including a wind-up doll, a harlequin, and a columbine.
Drosselmeyer has also brought Clara a special gift – a large Nutcracker in the shape of a toy soldier. Clara is delighted, but Fritz jealously grabs the Nutcracker away from her. When she demands that he give it back, Fritz angrily throws it down and breaks it. Clara is very upset by Fritz’s cruelty to her new toy.
All too soon the party is over and the guests go home. The family retires for the night, but Clara is unable to sleep and
returns to see her Nutcracker. An army of mice appears, led by the terrible Mouse King.
The Nutcracker is soon fi ghting for his life with the aid of the toy soldiers. The battle between the toy soldiers and the mice becomes a duel between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King. When defeat appears imminent for the Nutcracker, Clara helps the Nutcracker to victory. This act of devotion transforms the Nutcracker into a handsome prince.
The Prince takes Clara on a magical journey to the Land of Sweets, and they travel through a forest in the snow. Snowfl akes swirl in a beautiful and graceful waltz as the curtain falls on the fi rst act.
Continuing on their journey to the Land of Sweets, the Prince and Clara meet the Sugar Plum Fairy who welcomes them warmly to her kingdom. The Prince explains how he vanquished the Mouse King with the help of Clara. To celebrate the victory, Clara and the Prince are entertained by a variety of festive dances.
We shall never know if this magical journey of delightful fantasies and sugar spun dreams was a dream – or did it really happen on Christmas Eve long ago?

She attended the Craft of Choreography Conference in 2009 on full scholarship, and at the conclusion of the conference, she was honored to be chosen for the Choreography Connection Program, allowing her the opportunity to work with another company from the Regional Dance America membership and set a future work with them. She staged this new original work entitled From Point A… on the Southeast Alabama Dance Company in Dothan, Alabama. Alicia is blessed to have so much inspiration her life, and she hopes to be able to share that blessing with audiences and fellow dancers for years to come.

2013 NUTCRACKER SOLOISTS
Scott Erwin
Scott is performing in his 6th Nutcracker as the valiant wooden hero, which coincidently he claims is very close to his dancing style, stiff as a board. With encouragement from his wife, Rebecca, and his Civic Dance children, Austin, Zachary, and Kacey, Scott returned to performing after a two decade hiatus to share the joy and magic of this amazing ballet. In his youth, while a student at West High School, Scott joined the choir, including performing in the full chorus, the eight couple madrigal group, and the barbershop quartet. In his senior year he performed in South Pacifi c. Scott is a CPA and fi nance professional working with Aera Energy.
He is proud and honored to join his children in their passion for dance in the 36th Production of The Nutcracker. He is also thankful for Cindy & Kevin Trueblood, the Civic Dance Center, its dedicated teachers, and talented students.
Shelby Hagelstein
Shelby is 22 years old and a senior at CSU, Bakersfi eld. She is studying to be a high school English teacher. She loves yoga, traveling, teaching ballet, and hiking. She began dancing ballet when she was nine years old and loves the feelings of joy and freedom it gives her. Shelby has been part of the Bakersfi eld Symphony Orchestra’s / Civic Dance Center’s annual production for the past seven years and has performed the roles of Mother, Rose, Arabian, and Flower. Last year she had the honor of being cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy for the 35th Anniversary. The Nutcracker has become a holiday tradition she loves to share with her fellow dancers,
the symphony members, friends and family.
David Moreno
David started dancing at Civic Dance Center when he was 17 years old. He has traveled the world making a living as a dancer. He returned to Bakersfi eld to further his education and pursue a career in the medical fi eld. He currently works as a surgical technician at Delano Regional Community Hospital. David also teaches Jazz and Hip Hop at Civic Dance Center.

Samantha Palmer
Ms. Palmer received her ballet training at Civic Dance Center and summer programs with the San Francisco Ballet Company and the Contra Costa Ballet. She graduated from the University of California Irvine (UCI) with her Bachelor of Arts in Dance and was chosen by the renowned choreographer Donald McKayle to be a member of his Etudes Ensemble which traveled nationally. While at UCI she had the opportunity to perform in George Balanchine’s ballet Serenade. Ms. Palmer trained for two years at the Studio du Corps in Costa Mesa in order to become a Pilates instructor. She now teaches Pilates at the Golden Youth Rejuvenation Center and Spa. Civic
Dance Center is proud to have her as a faculty member. She also enjoys performing with Imagine Ballet Company and was one of their original members.
Marvin St. Pierre
Marvin returns for his 22nd Nutcracker season, donning the costumes of the distinguished Governor Silberhaus, and the fabulous Mother Ginger. What started out as a way to be involved in his daughters’ activities has turned into a Christmas tradition that he truly enjoys. Even though they no longer perform with him on this Nutcracker stage, they travel home to cheer him on. “Thank you Kaytie, Aimee, and Kellie for encouraging me with the fi ner points (or should that be pointes) of ballet.” What really motivates him to get out on the stage? The lady he admires most, his wife Kimm, so thoroughly enjoys it when he does.
