February 2012
Time doesn’t march on, it races ahead! In our Worship Committee meeting we could hardly believe we were planning our activities for Lent. I had already looked at some re-sources to use during our Wednesday night services for lent and found a study written by Adam Hamilton. It is called 24 Hours That Changed the World. We will begin the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday at 7:00pm. The following Wednesday evenings will begin with a potluck meal at 6:30pm in the fellowship hall. At 7:15 the adults will move to the sanctuary while the children and youth with have their own study of 24 Hours That Changed the World.
With this study we will be guided through the last day of Jesus’ life. We will start with the biblical foundation for our study followed by a video of the Holy Land showing the place where our study is fo-cused. We then will take some time to consider some questions and discuss.
I look forward to sharing 24 Hours That Changed the World with you during the coming season of Lent. May it be a time of introspection and renewal for us personally and as a congregation.
Grace and Peace
Pastor Hap
Christian Education News
This year don't say "no" to something for Lent, say "yes" to prayer and being a Prayer Part-
ner! The Prayer Partners will pray for each other every day, and in turn will be prayed for. We
hope many will feel an extra blessing during this season of Lent.
February 5th and 12th you will have the opportunity to sign up in the worship service. If
you are not apply to attend those dates and would like a Prayer Partner please call the church
office and let them know. You will be paired with someone, and during worship on February
19th all partners will receive a blessing.
Remember to attend the Wednesday studies during Lent. We will be using the book “24
Hours That Changed the World” by Adam Hamilton. There will be 3 classes: Adults, Youth and
Children. Come and enjoy this time together.
Vacation Bible School is around the corner! Well maybe not around the corner but it is time
to decide what we are going to do. If you would like to help me pick this year theme please let
me know as this needs to happen soon.
I want to thank everyone for the support you have given me this past month as your new
Christian Education Director.
KID KORNER Do you ever wonder what is happening with our Sunday School
kids? This was too precious to pass up.
One of our 5K students came home from school and shared their experience with their mother. My friend and I prayed before we ate lunch at school today. We both bowed our heads and folded our hands and thanked God for our food. Lots of kids were curious about what we doing so we told them that we were praying and thanking God for our food. Other kids wanted to join in also then.
No wonder Jesus loved the little children so much!!
Right after Christmas we sent our hand bells to be reconditioned. They should be back
sometime in February. After the Adult Hand Bell Choir played I had youth and children
come to me and ask if they could play too.
I will be starting all age groups as soon as the bells are back. The schedule will be:
Children (grades 2nd-6th) Sundays @ 4:00pm
Youth (grades 7th—12th) Sundays @ 5:15pm
Adults Sunday @ 6:30pm
If you have any question please call me at 897-9188. Kathy Itson
THANK YOU, SUE! The Staff Parish Relations Committee invited you to celebration together in honor of Sue Welch’s retirements as the Christian Education Director. Thanks to all of you who supported me as I recovered from my recent surgery. I am so great-
ful to Pastor Hap for his visit; to Vicki Evenson for dropping by to check on my recovery; to
those who provided food and to the many of you who sent cards. A special hug of gratitude to
the artist who created the soft lacy brown prayer shawl. Most of all, thank you for your
prayers! -- Mary Friederich
Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes that helped me through my surgery and recovery. With
two good knees there’s no telling what I can accomplish now! Thanks also for your cards, your phone calls

Let's Snack!!
You're reading it here. I am promoting snacking. You've had a month to try your 2012 resolutions to diet, lose weight etc. etc. Perhaps you have been too extreme in denying yourself and have failed as a result. Snacks are considered to be a portion of food smaller than a regular meal and generally eaten between larger traditional meals. Eating snacks works to stave off hunger and can actually promote weight loss. This may be a result of maintaining an even blood sugar level throughout the day and having something in the stomach to promote a mechanical feeling of full-ness. Now, before you hit the candy aisle at the local convenience store let's be perfectly clear that I am referring to snacks as nutritious mini-meals and not just junk food binges. Perhaps it would be best if you started by keeping a food diary to know when, what and how much you consume throughout the day. Then do some planning. Pick out some healthy snack recipes and make lists of those foods you like so you can incorporate them into your grocery shopping. You need to have healthy snack foods on hand to avoid impulse shopping or running through fast food lines. You might even label a bowl with each of your family member's names to keep their snacks available. Each day you can fill the bowls with the snacks for the day to control portions and make everyone ration their bowl's contents throughout the entire day. For instance, if you make a large container of GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) do not set it out to allow for non-stop consumption. A plastic baggie with a set portion will lessen the temptation for that “grazing” Cut and bag portions of fruits and vegetables to have them quickly available to grab and go. Let's look at “healthy snacks”. To keep up energy levels and avoid weight gain steer clear of foods with simple carbohydrates (sugars) like candy bars or soda. Eat those foods with complex carbohy-drates, like whole grain breads, and cereals. Combine them with protein-rick snacks like peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, or low-fat yogurt or cheese. Read food labels, including the serving size. Terms like “all natural” or “pure” does not necessarily mean nutritious. “Lo fat” and “lite” are not al-ways low calorie. A granola bar seems to mean healthy but many are loaded with trans fats and can contain lots of sugar. Make snacks interesting and change them up. Whole-wheat pretzels with spicy mustard, rice cakes with peanut butter and raisins are healthy, tasty, and easy. Consider healthier substitutions for your typical snacks. Baked tortilla chips and salsa or air popped popcorn are better than chips and dip. Nonfat frozen yogurt or sorbet is an improvement over ice cream....and remember to control the serving size. An 8 ounce mug of hot chocolate has only 140 calories and 3 grams of fat while a chocolate bar has 230 calories and 13 grams of fat! Hummus is usually a great improvement over dips and spreads. You can google hummus recipes to make them more economical than the store-bought versions and you can vary the flavors to everyone's liking. One of the kid's favorite hummus recipes may likely be peanut butter flavored. If you would like a copy of this recipe just pick one up from the nurse's desk at church. Avoid the urge to nibble when you are bored, frustrated or stressed. Learn other techniques to cope with these emotional triggers to eating. Last, there are a couple of things which help augment snacking pleasure and control the binging. Keep yourself hydrated to promote a sense of fullness. Increase your exercise or walking, as that can lift your mood and remove the temptation to snack. So, snack and be guilt free, just keep it healthy! Healthy snacking can make a healthy body, Vicki Evenson, Parish Nurse

News from the Library – February 2012 New Video This Month
Courageous Honor begins at home.
Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God... and to their children? Protecting the streets is second nature to these men. Raising their chil-dren in a God-honoring way? That's courageous.

returned. If you have one of these, please return as soon as possible. Thank you.
The Purpose of United Methodist Women The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community
of women whose purpose is:
• To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons
through Jesus Christ.
• To develop a creative supportive fellowship.
• To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
"Tell Your Story" to be the subject of our February Unit Program
Luke 1:4 states the purpose of Luke's narration of the story of Jesus...So that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed.
Has someone ever asked you why you believe a certain way? It might be about why you are a part of a group or organization or even a church that they have heard of, but do not participate in. Words flow as you tell of its importance in your life and for your community. With the Christian faith being interpreted by so many denominations, I can imagine nieces and nephews and grandchil-dren asking us why we worship here and not there. Why is mission so important to us?
Janice Davenport will share a program entitled "Tell Your Story" from our 2012 program book on Thursday, February 23rd. Please try to read Luke 1:1-4 and Luke 4:16-19 before we gather. De-sert will be served by Bernice Swartz and Betty Earleywine. Won't you join us at 1 pm in the Fellow-ship Hall? Lets shake those ice cycles off and warm one another together. Inquiring minds are ea-gerly welcomed!
Mustard Seed has Arrived
Or have we? On February 11th, we will conclude our study of Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, chapter 12. Can these two parts come together? Our author states, Christianity is a process and not an event. It is a journey, not a destination. Do I hear a sigh of relief? Does this mean I must continue to struggle to unify having a Mary Heart in a Martha World...or does this mean I must surrender MY ways? Come join us in room 23 at 9 am on February 11th as we conclude this chal-lenging study.
The following month, on March 10th, we will continue our journey of allowing God to change us from the inside out, with the study of Having a Mary Spirit, by Joanna Weaver. You may purchase this at a Christian book store or on ebay. If you need assistance ordering a copy, please see JoAnn Steuri or Mary Friederich. Come join us as we share our understanding of God's word.
Spring Fling ... Saturday, April 28th
This winter chill invites me to look at my spring calendar and jot down places to go and sights to see. One will be on Saturday, April 28th, as we carpool to Monona UMC in Madison for our Capital District Spiritual Growth Retreat. Our theme will be Immigration in the Bible, a 2012 School of Chris-tian Mission theme for this summer. The Rev Mary Kathryn Pearce from the Northern Illinois Con-ference and a past SOCM teacher will be our study guide who will lead us through the middle east beside familiar Bible characters.
Our unit pays for all of our registration costs for this retreat... snacks in the morning and a filling noon lunch are included. We will leave the church parking lot about 7:30 am to arrive an hour later for treats.
Won't you join us as we renew friendships with our sisters throughout the district? Registra-tion to Caroline or Mary is due before April 21st.
United Methodist Reading Program
Here are a couple of books that I am now reading that qualify for the reading program. 2009—Education For Mission: Many Faces One Church by Ernest S. Lyght, Glory E. Dharmaraj & Jacob S. Dharmaraj This manual is designed to help lay people and clergy understand the context, theology, ministry and mission of cross-racial and cross-cultural pastoral appointments in The United Methodist Church. Written by persons who have successfully served in such appointments, they share what they wished they had known before be-ginning and what they believe the church needs to understand in order to fulfill its theological mandate of in-clusivity.
2012—Spiritual Growth: Wasabi Gospel: The Startling Message of Jesus by Shawn Wood Wasabi Gospel takes you on a quest to really examine the words of Jesus and their impact on our lives. Us-ing seven well-known gospel passages, the book unpacks their real significance and explores what life would really look like if we lived out those seemingly subtle commands of Christ. When I am finished with these books I will donate them to the church. Remember to check our city library as you can get many of the books there.
NEW CARPET IS COMING!!
The installation of the new carpet will start on either Feb. 27 or March 5th.
Help will be need to move items before installation and put items back after in-
stallation. This will be done in sections. The first section will be the library, the back of sanctuary up to and
including the sound system. Bookcases, tables, chairs & sound system cabinets will need to be removed the
Monday start date & put back.. Proceeding to the front of the church, choir pews, alter, piano, organ, speak-
ers will need to be removed and put back.
A sign-up sheet will be available later on the table in the back of the church once the dates are con-
firmed.. Please put date &the time of day you are available. Any questions, please call 608-214-8289.

Our Administrative Council at Work…
At the January meeting, the Administrative Council reviewed and discussed many exciting plans to continue Jesus’ mission through work of our congregation. Here are a few of the highlights of what is happening:
Our apportionments are current and have been paid through the end of 2011! Praise God for our faithful and supportive con-gregation.
Kathy Itson has accepted the Director of Education position. She is working with Sue Welch dur-ing the transition period. A celebration of Sue’s ministry and retirement will be held on Sun-day, Feb. 12th.
Our congregation hosted Family Promise guests Dec. 25th – Jan. 1st. Many thanks go out to all of the volunteers that made this possible. Our next host date will begin on March 25th.
Our noisy can offerings for the first quarter of 2012 will be given towards providing hats, mittens, and school supplies for Elementary School children.
Our Trustees will be selecting carpet for the Sanctuary and Narthex area. The carpet will be in-stalled by Easter. The plans for a covered drop-off area on the land west of the church will proceed this spring. Handicapped doors will be placed at the lower level entrance.
The United Methodist Women are in the process of setting up several programs and speakers. They have invited Anita Henderlight to speak this spring about her work in South Sudan.
Deanna Shimko will be here this spring to share her mission updates with us.
Our youth will be assisting at the Brodhead Clothes Closet in January.
Our Funeral Luncheon Coordinator and Helper list has been updated and will be sent out to all members in the near future.
Our Pastor has been very busy meeting the needs of our Congregation. At future meetings, he will be working with the members of the Administrative Council to review and define our minis-try plans.
CHRISTIAN FICTION BOOK CLUB
We will meet on Wednesday February 8, 2012 at 4:00 PM. We will be discussing "AN INVISIBLE THREAD" written by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski.
Just a quick update We only have 16 more payments until the loan is paid off! I'm so excited that I wanted to share this in-formation with the congre-gation. Thanks to every-one for their gracious giv-ing. Joella
