Bridge no. 111 40x40.7m at Jhoosi bridge of N.E. Railway near Allahabad: The proposal for rebuilding the
bridge was examined advised accordingly.
Procedural checking of design document of Sone Bridge No. 531 .
Problem in ballast-less track in tunnels. Team from RDSO (B&S and Track Directorate) visited the site,
detailed technical report issued. Water ingress below base concrete need to be controlled. It was also
suggested that ballast-less track designed by RDSO be tried in some length.
Minor Cracks in PSC Box Girders of Br No 695 in BRC division. Horizontal cracks observed at junction
of deck and girder and at location where cold joint formed due to casting of Girder in two stages. NDT
testing was done by RDSO team, structurally it was found good. Quality control during construction was
lacking. Railway was advised to do epoxy grouting/painting, keep bridge under observation and gradually
relax the speed restriction, based on satisfactory performance of remedial measures done.
Minor Cracks in PSC Box Girder- Br No 196 on Udhampur-Katra section:- Horizontal cracks observed at
junction of deck and girder and at location where cold joint formed due to casting of Girder in two stages.
NDT testing was done by RDSO team, structurally it was found good. Quality control during construction
was lacking. Railway was advised to do epoxy grouting/painting, keep bridge under observation and
gradually relax the speed restriction, based on satisfactory performance of remedial measures done.
PSC Box Girder Bridge 20X45.1 m span, based on RDSO Drg BA-10232 is being constructed by RVNL.
They made a reference that some reinforcement details in the drawing are not clear. Based on reference
received, it was re-assessed and modified bar-bending schedule has been issued
CE/Con/E/NR, has forwarded a proposal for modifications of overall length of PSC Slab for 12.2m in
accordance with requirement at site for bridge no 112 & bridge no 187 (in Lohta-Jangai section). Designs
were accordingly, checked and modifications advised to Railway.
Chief Engineer/Construction, Central Railway advised that some cracks were observed (on side face in
anchor zone) on post tensioned PSC Slab 9.15 m, during post tensioning operation. Similar cracks were
also observed by RVNL (in Rewari-Manheru project). RDSO officials visited work sites of Central
Railway and RVNL to study the problem. Though, there is no deficiency in design, however, in field some
problems are noticed.
Design has been revised. Some modifications have been made based on earlier issued drawing for MBG
loading. Revised drawing issued vide RDSO drg no. RDSO/B-10272/R dated 27.01.2015.
This drawing has been used by RVNL in Rewari-Manheru doubling project and found satisfactory
Southern Railway construction organization (Kochi) requested to suggest methodology for fixing of
Elastomeric Bearings in position where gap between Girder bottom and top of bearing is excessive. The
matter was studied in detail based on earlier similar problems examined by RDSO, methods adopted on
other organizations and instructions issued earlier in this regard. Based on these methodology for the
rectification have been advised to Southern Railway vide CBS/DPC dated 13.03.2015.
RVNL requested RDSO to examine the suitability of PSC girder (as per RDSO drawing No. RDSO/B-
10270, suitable for c/c of piers as 26.2m) for c/c of piers upto 26.6m. The design was examined and found
suitable with some changes, necessary modifications have been advised to RVNL vide RDSO’s letter No.
CBS/DPC dated 27.05.2015.
Chief Project Manager-II/Bhubaneswar vide letter no. RVNL/BBS/HDS-PRDP/Railways/17/03/7091
dated 17.07.2015, forwarded design and drawings for 18.3m PSC slab suitable for 25t axle load and upto
2.5 degree curvature for in principle approval of RDSO. The designs and drawings have been scrutinized.
There are certain clarifications required from RVNL/Consultant (involved in the design), RVNL has
accordingly been advised vide letter No. CBS/DPS dated 14.08.2015.No clarification has been received
from RVNL yet.
As desired by CPM/RVNL/R, for clarification Alterations 1 A to 1 D has been issued in Drawing Nos:
RDSO/B-10270/1 & RDSO/B-10270/4.
RVNL advised that cracks have been observed in span No. 4 & 6 of Bridge No. 557 (Spans 20x45.1m)
PSC Box girder, span no 2 of Bridge No. 17 UP (3x30.5m) and Bridge 18 (1X30.5m) vide letter No.
2014/GCM/D/Misc.Corres dated 30.03.2015. RDSO Design and Testing team inspected these bridges.
NDT testing have also been done report in this regard is under issue.
Detailed report in respect of Bridge 557, 17 and 18 have already been issued.
Chief Engineer (Const.)/MTP asked clarification on “cl.15.6.4 of IRS Concrete Bridge Code” for its
applicability on circular short column subjected to Axial load and either bending about the major axis or

Measures taken to achieve Economy in Design
Revision of Provisions related to crack width in IRS-Concrete Bridge Code (CBC):- The provisions
regarding crack width were very stringent nearly 80% additional reinforcement were required to be
provided, to comply the instructions as compared to reinforcement required for moment/load
considerations.
With revision in crack width requirements (issued in Dec 2014) there will be saving of Crores of Rupees
on year to year basis. (BMRC projected saving of Rs 2.5 cr per km of Metro construction).
Deletion of para 14.9 and 15.9.9 of IRS-CBC having provisions regarding Shrinkage and Temperature
reinforcement in contradiction to distribution reinforcement. Nearly 2-3 tonne additional reinforcement
were required to be provided to follow these provisions in each RCC Box (for two line). These being
redundant have been deleted. RCC Box designs have been modified.
A&C 5 to IRS-CBC (reprint 2014) dated 13.06.2017 issued. Clause 16.4.4.4.5 modified and maximum
spacing of shear stirrups in PSC increased as per reference code i.e. BS: 5400. This will reduce congestion
of shear links as well as quantity of shear reinforcement in PSC.
Newly designed PSC U slab for 12.2 m span weighs only 89t against existing PSC slab of 163t, requires
about 30% less height above bed block level, economical, replaceable with Plate Girders & shall facilitate
continuation of LWR on Bridges.
Additional forces are to be considered for bridges in curved track. Generally bridges are planned in straight
alignment. To achieve economy, separate designs have been issued for twin RCC box i.e. for straight and
curved alignment.
Updation of Codes & Manuals
Various modifications proposed or carried out in codes and manuals with due deliberations are as under-
IRS-Concrete Bridge Code-
Re-print of Indian Railway Standard Concrete Bridge Code (IRS-CBC) (incorporating 13 A&C) – Indian
