Analogue vs. IP Cameras

Analogue Cameras
Analogue cameras output their imagefeed on a composite video feed, usingcoaxial cable and BNC plugs whichcan be connected directly into amonitor (VDU) or an analoguerecorder. The camera also requires
power. The video signal degrades thelonger the coax cable is. Analogueresolution is measured in TVL(Television Vertical Lines) and variesfrom 300-530 TVL – not to beconfused with TV Lines or pixels.

Analogue Recording and DVRs
For recording, analogue camerasused to be connected to VCRs (eachtape could run for up to 24 hours).VCR tapes suffer from degradation, unreliability, large storage spacerequirements and regular swapping.
DVR (digital video recorders) havemostly replaced tape systems foranalogue cameras now, using harddisks for storage. DVRs can bededicated units or PC based. A set ofBNC connectors on the unit will allowthe connection of analogue cameras
which allows continuous recordingand easy playback on all of thecameras.

IP Cameras
The optical part of IP and analogue cameras
are very similar up to the point where theimage is converted into an electrical signal. On an analogue camera, the image becomesan analogue signal down a coax cable. Onan IP camera, the image is digitized and thenprocessed as a digital image. This processingapplies a codec (coding and compressionalgorithm) to make the image suitable for
transmission with the most efficient use ofdata (lowest volume). The image istransmitted down a standard Cat5 Ethernetcable, connected with RJ-45 connectors.Unlike analogue coaxial cable, regardless ofdistance, the integrity of an IP camera imageis maintained, without any loss in quality.
Where legacy integration is required, someIP cameras (e.g. Brickcom FB-130A) provideboth digital IP and analogue outputs.

IP Recording & Storage
IP CCTV can be viewed on any PC
connected to your network across theInternet or via any WAN link. Brickcomcameras also allow viewing of streams onsmartphones on 3G networks.
For recording, with IP data, it can recordeddirectly from the web interface for ad-hocrecording but for continuous or event
triggered recording, you can use adedicated hardware NVR (network videorecorder) or NVR software running on a PC.The NVR connects directly into your LAN.
Brickcom cameras come with free NVRsoftware (‘BRC64’) supporting up to 64
channels (cameras). This allows video to berecorded and stored for later review orevent triggered notification.

Analogue vs. IP Cameras
• Inherrently Networkable• Low cost CAT5 cable vs. Coax• More reliable CAT5 vs. Coax cable
• PoE - No local power required• Much higher resolution• More flexible viewing options
• High scalability• Lower TCO• No image interlacing (all progressive scan)• Recording and viewing requires no special hardware• Multiple simultaneous viewers and storage
• Easy Remote viewing and storage• Integrated Video and audio
• Local storage within the camera (e.g. SD cards)• Easy camera management and control (WUI)• Built-in intelligence (action triggers etc.)

Advantages of
Megapixel Cameras

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/brickcom-why-ip 10/26
IP camera resolution is measured in pixels (X by Y) – every pixel is a
single cell on the camera element. The latest highest resolutionanalogue cameras (530 TVL) provide a resolution approximatelyequivalent to VGA (i.e. 640 x 480 pixels) which is ~380,000 pixels.Analogue cameras are limited by the the PAL video system so it isimpossible to increase analogue camera resolution.
A megapixel camera has at least 1 million pixel.
The more pixels you have in a camera sensor, the higher the resolutionbecomes and so the greater detail you can distinguish.
Megapixel resolution also means that digital zoom or full screenviewing is actually useful during playback of video because the greaterdetail actually exists whereas digital zoom or full on analogue video is
pointless because there is no extra detail available.

In ‘area coverage’ (perimeter)applications, i.e. detecting anyunauthorised activity or intrusionacross large areas, having greaterresolution increases the area you
can cover with each camera (soless cameras are needed). Thehigher resolution means that youare able to have a wider field ofview but still discern objectsacross the whole image andfurther in the distance.
