Breakthrough Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)
Lesson 1: July 22/23- Through Love
How can you break through to someone who doesn’t know or love God? Through the story of Jesus healing
a lame man, we find out how our love can share God’s good news, the story of Jesus!
Lesson 2: July 29/30- Through My Life
The way you live can share God’s story. This week we’ll learn about a woman who was known for living
like Jesus, and think about the things our actions say about us.
Lesson 3: August 5/6- Through My Story
Paul loved to share the story of how he met Jesus. In fact, it’s told three different times in the Bible. One of
those is the story of Paul talking to a group of important leaders. He wanted everyone to know about Jesus.
How can your story help others learn about Jesus?
Lesson 4: August 12/13- Know Jesus
Once you are following Jesus, you are his disciple! The question is, what does a disciple do? Jesus tells a
parable, or story, about what it means to be a disciple. He compares his followers to seeds! Why? Find out
in Elevate, or check it out in Matthew 13, in the Bible!
Lesson 5: August 19/20- Follow Jesus
When Jesus was on earth, many people wanted to follow him. When a rich young man asked Jesus to let
him come along, Jesus told him that it would cost everything that he had. It’s not easy, but following Jesus
is worth whatever it costs.
Lesson 6: August 26/27- Copy Jesus
When following Jesus, it’s important to do what he says! Peter and John found that out the first time they
met Jesus. We can still copy the things Jesus did today! Whenever we serve others, are kind, or show love,
we are being good disciples of Jesus!
Lesson 7: September 2/3- Make Disciples
The mission of Jesus’ followers hasn’t changed since he was here on earth. The goal of every disciple, is to
make more disciples! To complete this mission, every one of us is important. This week, find out how Peter,
one of Jesus’ first disciples, accomplished this awesome mission.

What You Need to DO and KNOW Each Week
Opening Do This: Encourage everyone to gather near the stage, and have FUN! Give high-fives, welcome
the kids by name, dance to the music, and let kids know we’re going to have fun today! Interact with
the crowd! Create a buzz about what is going to happen.
Know This: This is intended to be a fun time! You as the leader need to set that standard so kids
can feel comfortable. If you’re not willing to open up and be silly, they won’t either. It’s ok if some
kids are shy or stand-offish, but YOU should model what we’d like to see!
Welcome Do This: Greet the kids with enthusiasm without being overwhelming.
Know This: During this time you are working to gain the kids’ trust. Something as simple as telling
them what is going to happen during the hour can help relieve some anxiety that they may have. We
will also gain their trust by showing them that this is a place that is not weird or different from what
they see in other places.
Worship Do This: Perform the provided actions to the songs and demonstrate enthusiastic worship for kids.
Encourage kids to join in, but don’t force them to participate. Read aloud any verses that are on the
screen (unless the song features a voice over). Direct the kids’ attention towards God. Call out
upcoming lyrics when appropriate and help the kids engage in singing.
Know This: It’s okay if some kids don’t sing or do actions to the songs. They may worship by just
reflecting on the lyrics and listening. Our music set is generally made of high-energy songs to help
kids get engaged in worship.
Media Do This: Sit or stand to the side of the screen(s). Watch the media and appear engaged using
appropriate non-verbals.
Know This: Although this is a good time to catch your breath and gather your thoughts, you are
still technically “on.” Kids may be looking at you to see if you are watching the videos, and if you
don’t look engaged, they may not choose to engage either.
Prayer Do This: Ask the kids to be respectful and quiet; you will pray out loud, while they pray quietly in
their hearts and heads. Sit or crouch down and engage the kids as you pray.
Know This: We want the kids to learn how to pray by seeing you model this. Feel free to say your
own prayer – this one is simply a suggestion, but do keep it short.
Bible Verses & Memory Verse Do This: Read any verses from the side screen aloud. Make the memory verse fun! After you’ve
read it, do something silly like challenge the boys to be louder than the girls, jump up and down,
add actions, or have the kids recite the verse using different voices.

Opening Song 2:00
Welcome to Elevate! I’m super glad that you all made it here today. Come on up to the front,
and throw away your popcorn on the way! As you come up to the front, make sure you get
a clothespin! Do This: Before the lesson begins, recruit two older kids to hand out clothespins to everyone at this
time.
Make sure it is clipped on to your sleeve, right near your shoulder. Do This: Show kids where to clip their clothespin. If they do not have sleeves, they may pin it to
the upper back of their shirt, by the shoulder blade.
Welcome and Opening Activity 8:00
I’m excited to get started! Today we get to play games, hear an amazing story from the
Bible, and join the Konnect crew for a space adventure. To start off, I have a fun activity for
all of you!
This is an activity that all of us can play! As you came in, each of you got a clothespin.
Those are the seeds! Make sure yours is clipped on to your sleeve, right near your shoulder.
In a minute, I’m going to say “Go.” When I do, you have to get as many clothespins as
possible, and pin them to your sleeve. To get a clothespin, you simply pull it off of someone
else’s sleeve. You may not grab any other person’s clothes or arms, be sure to only touch
the clothespins! One more thing: you have to clip a clothespin on your sleeve as soon as you
get it. You can’t carry them around in your hands. Know This: Feel free to set space-specific boundaries, such as not climbing on anything, not
running through a certain area, and not going on/back stage and into the sound booth.
If all of your pins get taken, keep trying to get one from someone else! That’s it for rules, so
now get up on your feet, and get ready, set, go! You have four minutes to play!

Do This: If you have fourth and fifth graders only, feel free to provide extra challenges for them,
such as only being able to grab with their non-dominant hand, having to hop instead of run, or trying
to play without using their thumbs.
Do This: Encourage kids as they play this game. If some kids become tired or do not want to play,
you could sit and hang out with them. Do your best to make this a good experience for every kid.
Nice work! Who has the most clothespins? Count them up quickly! Does anyone have more
than ten? More than twenty? Good job! Do This: Bring the winner up on stage, and let him or her say how many clothespins they have.
Bring all of your clothespins, and put them in this box near the stage. Then, find a place to
sit! For the last few weeks here in Elevate, we’ve been talking about the story of Jesus. We
have talked about different ways to share Jesus’ story, like telling our own stories, loving
others, and showing people who God is by the way we live. Today, we get to learn what it
means to be a “disciple” of Jesus. We’ll hear more about that word “disciple” in a few
minutes, but first it’s time for our question of the day!
What is something you know a lot about? Do you love volcanoes, bikes, drawing, music,
or a sport? Turn to someone near you and ask them about it! You can listen to them talk
about something they really like. Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with those around
them. This question time is meant to give kids an opportunity to talk to one another, so encourage
them to interact with each other!
Learning about awesome things is a lot of fun! When we really care about something,
that’s what we do, we read, we listen, we find out all there is to know about it.

That’s one of the reasons we sing songs here in Elevate. They help us learn and remember
things about God, the one who made this entire world! Let’s all stand and sing this song to
God together!
You can sit down. Praising God with you is so much fun. Let’s take a minute to talk to God
now. You can talk to Him about anything, any time. Here in Elevate, we close our eyes and
fold our hands, not because we have to, but we do it to show God respect while we talk to
him.
God, you made everything in this world. You are so powerful and mighty. Thank you for
your promises to us, and your love for us. In Jesus name, amen.
This series is called “Breakthrough.” A breakthrough is a moment when something changes
in a big way. When an archaeologist discovers a huge dinosaur, a musician masters a new
piece of music, or someone makes a really big decision, those are all breakthrough moments.
When God sent Jesus to earth, it was the biggest breakthrough in history! Jesus’ story
changed everything. He gave us the chance to be close to God again.

Share Your Story 3:00
Worship 5:00
Earlier, I mentioned the word “Disciple.” A disciple is someone who follows, learns from,
and lives for Jesus. Choosing to be a disciple of Jesus is the most important choice you and
I can ever make. Some of you have made that choice, and some of you may not have. How
can you tell the difference? What happens when you become a disciple of Jesus? That’s the
question we’re asking the Konnect crew today!
The Konnect crew’s mission is to share Jesus’ story around the world from their space
station. Let’s see if they can help us figure out what is means to be a disciple of Jesus.
They’ve got a verse for us to learn, then we’ll see what is happening on the Konnect station!
I wonder if Kate will ever figure out the point of that story. It would be so awesome if she
chose to be a disciple of Jesus, but she doesn’t seem to get it.
I remember a time when I didn’t get what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. Do This: Share an engaging, relevant, age-appropriate story about a time when you “didn’t get”
what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus. This could be a time before you asked Jesus to be your leader,
or a time after you asked him when you did something you shouldn’t have. How did you realize that
you needed a change? What did you learn about Jesus that changed the way you saw things, or
encouraged you to change your behavior?
Sometimes, it’s through the times we don’t understand that God can teach us really
important things. To be a disciple of Jesus means to know who he is, and what he wants to
do. It’s ok if there are things we don’t get, but the more we know Jesus, the greater following
him will be!

Video Part 2 6:00
You’ve been sitting and listening for a while, so I think it’s time to get up and sing to God!
Let’s sing “Who I Wanna Be!”
Great job! You can sit back down. I want to find out what Luke tells Kate about being a
disciple of Jesus. Let’s tune back in to Konnect station!
Application Activity 6:00
It’s cool that the crew is trying to help Kate become a disciple of Jesus. That was a really
great point they told us. What was that again?
Right! Disciples know Jesus. If you want to follow someone and live the way they did, the
first step is to know about them. That’s why Luke gave Kate the job of reading her Bible.
That is one of the best ways we can get to know who Jesus is. Do This: If you are doing this in groups, send the kids to meet with their group leader now. Ensure
each group has a packet of seeds and the four parable pictures.
Let’s think a little more about that story Jesus told. Remember that game we played
earlier, where we pretended clothespins were seeds? In the story we just heard, Jesus used

seeds to talk about different kinds of people. The examples He shared can help us think
about the people that hear about Jesus. Let’s see. I’ve got some seeds here. Just like in
Jesus’ story, these represent people. All these people need to know about Jesus. They need
to know how much He loves them, and that He wants to be their friend. Do This: Show kids the seeds. If you want, you can set a few on different parts of the stage to
represent each type of seed in the story.
The first seeds Jesus talked about fell on the path. He said those were like people who
heard about Jesus, but didn’t care. This reminds me a little of Kate, from the video. She is
so focused on her project, she doesn’t seem to have time to get to know Jesus. Kids, can
any of us force a seed to grow? No, we can’t. Only God can make a seed grow, but we can
do things to help the seed grow. There is also something we can do to help a person who
doesn’t want to hear about Jesus. How do you think you could you help a seed that was
stuck on the path? Do This: Allow one or two kids to answer.
You would probably have to move the seed. Sometimes people just don’t want to know
God. That’s not your fault, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on them. You can
pray for them, and keep inviting them to come to church, a place where they can grow and
get to know God better.
The second example Jesus gave was of rocky soil. The seeds that fell here were fine at
first, but they don’t have roots. These are people that hear about God and decide to follow
him, but don’t take the time to actually get to know and love him. How can you fix up
some rocky soil? Do This: Allow one or two kids to answer.
You take out the rocks! That would be like helping someone to get to know God better.
You could read the Bible with them, pray with them, and keep coming to church with
them. Those are all great ways to help someone learn about God.
Path through a field picture
Rocky Soil picture
Thorny Soil picture
Breakthrough Lesson 4
August 12/13 12
The third type of soil was full of thorns. The seeds that landed here tried to grow, but
couldn’t. Jesus said the thorns were like people’s worries, the things they care about more
than God. These people need to know more about who God says they are. They can grow
to be so amazing, if they will let go of the thorns, their worries, and put God first in
everything. We can show them how amazing God is by the way we live. When we obey
what God says, and spend time with him, others will notice.
If you feel like one of those three seeds, it’s ok. Jesus knows and understands your story,
too. He wants you to know and love Him just like He knows and loves you. All of the
adults in this room would love to listen to you if you have questions about making Jesus
your leader. Jesus wants all of us to be like the seeds in good soil. He wants us to grow
closer to God, and learn more about him every day. Some ways we can do that are
spending time with God, knowing and loving him, and being a part of the church. All of
you can make those choices, and encourage others to make them too.
I’ve got another activity for you, right after we check out Alissa and Mike’s review of
what happened on Konnect station!

Do This: Lead the way by talking in your best southern drawl for the rest of this activity. It doesn’t
have to be great, in fact, that’s part of the fun! The more you do this, the more the kids can get into
it. If they don’t use much of an accent, accept their answer anyway.
Alright, your first question is:
What was the point that Luke and the others at Konnect station learned? Do This: Allow a kid to answer.
The point was, “Disciples know Jesus.” Good job! Let’s try another one.
In Jesus’ parable, what four types of soil did the seeds fall into? Do This: Allow a kid to answer.
The answer is… The path, rocky soil, thorny soil, and good soil. Nice job. Next question,
please!
What was the name of the new researcher on Konnect station? Do This: Allow a kid to answer.
Her name was: Kate! She’s not quite sure about Jesus yet, but she’s getting there. I have one
more review question for you.
What was today’s memory verse? I think we should all try saying this one together!
Philippians 3:10- “I want to know Christ better, I want to know the power that raised him
from the dead.” Good job, everyone!

There are so many ways to share Jesus’ story with others. Take a look around you this week.
Do you see anyone who is worried, like the soil with thorns in it? You could try to help them
out! Do you see anyone who wants to know God better, but isn’t sure how, like the rocky
soil? Invite them to Elevate, or read the Bible with them! If you aren’t feeling sure about
following Jesus, come and talk to me or any one of the grown-ups here in Elevate. We would
love to talk and pray with you. In fact, we can talk to God right now. Let’s close our eyes
and bow our heads to show respect to God while we pray.
God, you are incredible. We can’t even imagine how great you are. Thank you for helping
us to know you better. Amen.
We have a few minutes left, so let’s have some fun and celebrate God with a song!
I’m so glad you could all be here in Elevate. I hope your week is totally awesome! You can
hang out here until your adults come and pick you up!
