AVAKIAN RELEASES PLAN TO COMBAT SHELL COMPANY ABUSE AND FINANCIAL FRAUD
PORTLAND – Today, Brad Avakian, the state’s Labor Commissioner and Democratic candidate
for Secretary of State, presented his plan to crack down on shell company abuse and financial
fraud.
Every business wanting to operate in Oregon must file with the Secretary of State’s
Corporations Division. The office also houses the Audits Division which can be used to
investigate companies doing business with the state.
Avakian called for requiring more detailed information on filings, investigative powers, and
stiffer penalties for those engaging in fraud.
“No one should look to Oregon as a safe haven to commit fraud,” said Brad Avakian. “As
Secretary of State I will aggressively investigate any irregularities and ensure those committing
fraud are held accountable.”
Brad Avakian is the only candidate for Secretary of State who has run a state agency. As the
Commissioner of Labor and Industries he has enforced the state’s minimum wage and
prevailing wage laws, and cracked down on corporations not playing by the rules. As
Commissioner, Avakian professionalized the bureau’s prosecution unit, resulting in an effectivesystem to hold abusive corporations and government agencies accountable. In the last year
alone, the bureau settled the largest civil rights case (Daimler) and largest wage case (Southern
Oregon University) in bureau history.
