The next round [round 6] is a fortnight away with an allegro scheduled for this Friday, and many of our players away for the long weekend in Ballarat. I am waiting for the result of the Zelesco / Flude game before I can make the draw for round 6
as the winner of this game will enter the chaser group of 6 on 4 points. However there is no doubt about the board one game between our 2 Fide Masters. Only a matter of colour allocation.
The results for round 5 were quite significant separating the wannabees from the ones already there. I thought that Shane had a sure draw against Bobby and Bill was in a strong posi-
tion against Chris but when I came around again complete change! The much anticipated game Renzies / Brown ended in a draw but hardly a tame one. Pawn on the 6th against rook. Top players David Hacche and FM Doug Hamilton recovered somewhat from their slip up in the previous round but will have to keep their skates on to finish in the prizes. No such
recovery for Robert Bartnik who has the misfortune of running into up and coming Canterbury Juniors in sharp form. In the lower half of the draw Both Sam Gluzman and David Cannon
are moving along nicely with good wins over John Ni and Ste-ven Guo respectively. Adrian and Dinesh collected their first point
FM Bobby Cheng half a
point in front

Bobby’s heels

An interview with Chris Wallis
2011 Teams Competition
The highly successful 2010 teams competition will be on again this
year; but with some important changes. Here are some dot points
of the information posted on Karl Gorka’s [the appointed organ-
izer] blog:
There will be 3 divisions of 8 teams each playing a round
robin competition between May and November. There will be a
promotion and relegation system.
All players in the teams must be members of the CV affili-
ated club they play for.
Teams shall consist of 4 players with up to 7 players per
team registered with the league.
Players can only play for one team during the year and of
course for one club only.
Forfeit procedures have been tightened up
Forfeits: If a player forfeits a game by not showing up for a
match, then the game shall be scored as a zero. If a player does
this twice during a season, then they shall be disqualified from the
event for the remainder of the season. Should they forfeit again in
the following 2 years, they will be immediately disqualified from the
event.
The forfeit time for games is 30 minutes after the start of the match.
If a team does not show up for a designated match, they
will lose the match 4-0. If this happens twice in a season, the team
shall be disqualified for the rest of the season. The following season,
if the team wish to re-enter the competition, a bond may be
placed on the team returnable on completion of all matches
There will be a process for appeals
Each team captain, as a representative of their team,
may challenge any decision that the league takes. This shall take
the form of an appeal, and if necessary the matter will be dealt
with by an appeals committee, made up of the league administra-
tion, a representative of the State body Chess Victoria, and a
member of a club not involved in the dispute.
As we have already lost several of our top performing players from
last year competition to other clubs and coaching organizations
[What ever happened to club loyalty? ] I urge all members of both
Canterbury Junior and Box Hill Chess Club who are interested in
playing in the competition to contact Peter Tsai our secretary as
soon as possible so a final decision on our teams can be made. If
we indeed there are to be 3 grades we can field 6 teams easy
The eagerly awaited interview by Raelene Zelesco of Club
champion Chris Wallis is held over till next week
