Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) in collaboration with the Kenya High Commission to Botswana and Business Botswana jointly hosted a business delegation from the Republic of Kenya from the 27th to the 29th June 2016. The visit by the Kenya business delegation coincided with the State Visit to Botswana by the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Business Seminar was hosted at Gaborone Interna-tional Convention Centre (GICC) on the 28th June 2016 with the visiting President, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta as Guest of Honour. In attendance to welcome him was the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Hon. Vincent T. Seretse. In his welcome remarks the Minister gave an overview of Botswana’s economic climate and BITC’s mandate, he also stated that, “Botswana and Kenya enjoy historical trade relations and that the two countries have in the past held business seminars to

He stated that, “I hope that a Forum of this nature, which has been held twice this year, will contribute to the turnaround of an undesirable situation and boost trade amongst the two countries.” He further stated that the Forum provides an opportunity to dialogue which will allow for the two countries to work together. The first quarter of the financial year, 2016/2017 was a busy period for BITC and Botswana. The organisation hosted a Business Seminar for the German inward business delegation in April and another one for the Kenya inward business delegation in June. The Kenya Business seminar was as a result of the State Visit by the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru

Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) participated in the Business Botswana Northern Trade Fair from the 25th to the 29th May 2016 in Fran-cistown. This annual fair attracted the private sector and public organisations across the country and the Francistown Small to Medium enterprises. This year’s theme was, “Connecting Ideas; Creating Opportunities.” The 2016 Business Botswana exhibi-tion was officially opened by the Botswana Telecom-munications Limited (BTCL) Managing Director, Paul Taylor.

There were various sectors that were represented at the fair such as Government, Parastatals, Business Services, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Textile and Footwear, Manufacturing, Mobile Operators, Tourism and Hospitality, Information Communications Technology (ICT), Professional Bodies, Education, Construction and Mining, Security and Traders. The official opening for the Trade Fair was on the 27th May 2016 and the gates were opened to the public the same day. The delegates com-prised of the City Mayor, Francistown Town Councillors, Members of Parliament, Business Botswana President and Parastatal Chief Executive Officers who also toured

The family - run business, Kemptek (Pty) Ltd, located in Francistown is the leading manufacturer of ethnic hair care, skin care and perfumes in Botswana with over 24 years of experience in catering to the special needs of African hair and skin. The company aims to become one of the top five key players in the ethnic health and beauty market in Africa within the next ten years.

Kemptek was incorporated in 1988 and commenced its business in 1990. The company currently employs 42 locals with assets worth nearly P19.5 million. Kemptek manufactures consumer mass-market cosmetics, profe- ssional hair care products and ‘Cosmecuetical’ skin care products. The majority of products manufactured are consumer mass-market cosmetics. All products are currently distributed throughout Botswana, whereas, only selected products that are relatively or completely unique are distributed to the Republic of South Africa and

Zimbabwe.

Kemptek made serious inroads in promoting its products in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Currently exports to these two countries make up about 80% of the export sales. The company is in the process of exporting its products to Zambia.

Almost all the company’s products are registered with the relevant trade mark authorities in South Africa. These products have also been approved by the relevant medi-cal councils and health authorities in South Africa and Tanzania. Some of the products have also been regis-tered with the Office of the Registrar of Patents, Marks and Designs in Botswana.

BITC has been instrumental in contributing to the ongoingsuccess of the company. Kemptek through BITC market- eted their products to international trade fairs in Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. BITC also provided Kemptek with country specific information in order to help penetrate export markets. Another company that is owned by Kemtek (Pty) Ltd and assisted by BITC assisted by BITC is Galaxy Aerosols (Pty) Ltd.
