Social Security temporarily drops for 2011By David Uffington
The amount you pay for Social Securitywill temporarily drop for 2011. In the pastyou and your employer have both paid 6.2percent of your annual gross income intothe Social Security fund. This year yourportion goes down to 4.2 percent.
Here's how that looks in real numbers:•If you make $30,000, your Social
Security tax will fall from $1,860 to$1,260, thus saving you $600. That's $50per month.
•If you make $40,000, your SocialSecurity tax will fall from $2,480 to$1,680, thus saving you $800. That's $66per month.
•If you make $50,000, your SocialSecurity tax will fall from $3,100 to$2,100, thus saving you $1,000. That's $83per month.
•If you're self-employed you have beenpaying 12.4 percent of your income to
Social Security. For this year, that willdrop to 10.4 percent.
The government, one assumes, wantsyou to spend that extra money out in themarketplace to help the economy get backon its feet by creating other jobs. A betterplan is to use it to help yourself.
Here are a few things you can do withthat (albeit small) amount of money:
•If you have credit-card debt, pick acard and increase your monthly paymentby that amount, perhaps even rounding upto the next $10 increment.
•Catch up on past due accounts thathave been costing you extra in fees andinterest.
•Add the extra as a principal paymenton an existing loan, thereby shortening thelife of that loan.
•If you habitually run up debt atChristmas, once that debt is paid off, putthe extra money in a Christmas savingsaccount at the bank. By the end of this
year you'll have enough to pay cash for allyour purchases.
Whatever you do, don't take on newpayments on the assumption that you'llcontinue to have that increased amount inyour pocket over the long haul.
NOTE: If you usually file early anditemize your deductions, the InternalRevenue Service doesn't want your taxreturn yet. It's not ready. The reason is thatcomputers haven't been programmed toaccommodate a few new changes in laws.Aim for the second half of February. Ifyou use computer software, be sure to getthe latest updates.

You should guard your Social Security numberBy Matilda Charles
Social Security numbers were firstissued to identify those who were gettingbenefits. Now it's become a national IDnumber, and far too many people haveaccess to it.
Theft of Social Security numbers is bigbusiness. With that little number, plus yourname and address, thieves can steal youridentity and take your money or run updebt in your name. At the very least, it canmean spending untold hours straighteningout the mess when your credit report haserrors. With that number, someone can getmedical services in your name, and at yourexpense, or refinance your mortgage andtake the profits. For those who've puttogether a nice nest egg, it can mean losingeverything you've worked for over theyears.
McAfee, a computer security company, put together a list of the Top 10 places
where our Social Security numbers aremost likely to be stolen. Starting with theriskiest places, they are: universities andcolleges, banks and financial institutions, hospitals, state governments, local govern-ments, federal governments, medical busi-nesses that provide equipment or billingservices, nonprofit organizations, technolo-gy companies, medical insurance and med-ical offices.
While it's often necessary to give yourSocial Security number to get services, cutyour risk by being careful.
Send for a free copy of your creditreport every year to make sure it doesn'thave errors.
Invest in a shredder, or share one withfriends. Shred any mail (unless you needto file it away) that has your personalinformation on it.
If you're hunting for a job, don't auto-matically put your Social Security numberon the application. Those applications
often end up in dumpsters behind the busi-ness. Instead, wait until they hire you andprovide the number to the appropriate per-son in Human Resources.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannotpersonally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into her column wheneverpossible. Write to her in care of King FeaturesWeekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.

By Angela Shelf MedearisFor many of us, healthy habits seem to
go out the window as soon as we stepbeyond our front door. When eating awayfrom home, planning may be the mostimportant action a person can take whentrying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Planning ahead provides a variety ofhealthy food choices and portion sizes thatare satisfying. With a little thought, anyonecan plan a healthy snack or meal-on-the-gothat best fits any situation. Use these asinspiration:
•Whole-wheat bagel, low-fat cheese,pear, water
•Fresh spinach, feta and cubed chickenin a whole-wheat pita, grapes, skim milk
•Broth-based soup (pass on the creamsoups), baked wheat crackers, apple
•Sliced turkey with low-fat dressingwrapped in a lettuce leaf, baked chips, fresh berries, iced tea
Try these tips if you are away fromhome:
•If eating in the car is a trouble spot foryou, make it a rule to only bring water inthe car if you're traveling for an hour orless.
•If your weakness is stopping at con-venience stores, fast-food restaurants orvending machines, put those on your "Donot stop" list, or order only one item, likethe grilled chicken, and bring the rest ofyour meal in a cooler. Lettuce, instead of abun, wrapped around chicken or a burgeris a tasty alternative.
•Bring a healthy snack or lunch withyou. Include some protein - it satisfieslonger. With an apple, bring some peanutbutter, cheese or nuts.
•Carrying lunch to work saves youmoney, plus you have the added benefit ofchoosing what's healthiest for you!
•Take healthy foods that travel well:Cottage cheese, vegetable sticks, yogurt, fruit, granola bars and nuts are great choic-es.
•Keep refreezeable ice packs in yourfreezer to throw in your cooler when trans-porting meat, dairy and cooked foods.Freeze 100-percent juice packs or, in apinch, throw some ice cubes in a zipper-lock plastic bag.
This recipe for Crunchy Chili Beansmade from garbanzo beans (also known aschickpeas) is a healthy snack to pack forthe days when you're on the go. They canbe stored in an airtight container and left inyour car for up to 7 days so that youalways have a nutritious snack on hand.Chickpeas/Garbanzo beans are a goodsource of cholesterol-lowering fiber andhelp prevent blood-sugar levels from risingtoo rapidly after a meal. Garbanzo beansare high in protein and also promote slowburning of complex carbohydrates, thusincreasing your energy by replenishingyour iron stores.
(Tips provided by Jill Kokkonen May, ahealth and nutrition educator withUniversity of Minnesota Extension.)
Crunchy Chili BeansSeasoning the garbanzo beans with the
spices and then roasting them makes thebeans crisp on the outside and creamy andflavorful on the inside.
2 (15-ounce) cans garbanzobeans (chickpeas)
1 tablespoon Worcestershiresauce
1 tablespoon chili powder2 teaspoons liquid-smoke flavor-
ing1 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon garlic powder1/2 teaspoon hot sauce1. Drain the garbanzo beans and rinse
them several times with cold water. Spreadthe beans on a paper towel to dry. Mix theWorcestershire sauce, chili powder, liquidsmoke, cinnamon, garlic powder and hotsauce together in a bowl. Add the beans tothe Worcestershire mixture and marinatefor 30 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a cook-ie sheet with oil, and spread the beans outin a single layer. Bake for approximately30 minutes. Stir the beans periodically foreven browning. Remove and cool beforeeating. Store beans in an air-tight containeror resealable plastic bag for up to 7 days.Makes about 3 cups.
