PepsiCo also commits to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity for U.S. operations by 25percent through its partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Climate Leadersprogram.
Heres one example of how PepsiCo is cutting its energy use and carbon footprint. Thecompanys Gatorade manufacturing facility in Guadalajara, Mexico, implemented a heat
recovery project that uses heat from thermally processed beverages to preheat the cool productcoming into the pasteurizer. This helps save 73,000 liters of fuel, 105,000 kWh of electricity and2 million liters of water, preventing the emissions of more than 200,000 tons of carbon dioxideannually.

PepsiCo set goals to reduce packaging weight by 350 million pounds, avoiding the creation ofone billion pounds of landfill waste by 2012, and to create partnerships that promote the increase
of U.S. beverage container recycling rates to 50 percent by 2018. One of thosepartnerships iswith Waste Management.
In 2009, 14 Frito-Lay manufacturing facilities disposed less than one percent of solid waste tolandfill. The company says the remaining 18 facilities will achieve nearly zero landfill by the
end of 2011.
In addition, almost all waste generated at the more than 30 Frito-Lay plants is reused or recycled. As an example, the 20 million pounds of potato peelings and corn hulls are sent to livestockfarms for use as feed.
Over the past five years, Frito-Lay has eliminated 150 square miles of packaging by reducingmaterials by 10 percent. The company consumes 150,000 tons less paperboard each year byreusing its shipping cartons up to six times.
