GREAT DESIGN IS CAPTIVATING AND LIBERATING.Which is the more fascinating – an artwork whose every stroke embodies grace and elegance, or a technically perfect entity, powerful and enthralling in its sheer functionality? It’s a question answered by the BMW X in its own unique way. Its athletic front end and striking kidney grille create a commanding appearance, while elegantly flowing lines along the side of the vehicle compliment a particularly dynamic driving experience. Striking Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running light rings are optionally available and are guaranteed to light up more than just the road ahead. But most of all it’s the interplay of form and function that makes it an unmistakable example of fine engineering.

FORGE AHEAD.The new BMW X wasn’t designed to just drive. It was designed to live the road, to

feel every single bend and master every terrain. Numerous technologies assist the

driver, such as the optional variable sports steering and standard BMW xDrive, the

four-wheel drive system that transfers the requisite engine power to the front and

rear axles in a fraction of a second. Road holding on all surfaces is noticeably

improved and you’ll enjoy an even safer and more comfortable ride. The new BMW

BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS. SUSTAINABILITY AS STANDARD.Many companies can make a car. But only BMW is capable of turning a minimal amount of

energy into a maximum amount of joy. That’s exactly what BMW EfficientDynamics stands

for. Technologies that deliver enhanced performance right alongside reduced fuel

consumption and emissions, thus not only conserving precious resources but also boosting

your driving pleasure in the new BMW X .

BRAKE AND GAIN ENERGY.

ACCELERATE AND CONSUME

LESS FUEL. AND THAT’S JUST

FOR STARTERS –

BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS.

In nature there are no compromises. Every organism is adapted to its environment and as efficient as possible. A good landscape architect can follow this example, and can develop solutions and concepts in harmony with this principle. At BMW, we’ve given this approach a name: BMW EfficientDynamics. The multi-award-winning technology package has everything you need to fully enjoy your new BMW X – sustainably. The new eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission is just one of these innovations. With its adaptive gear shift system the transmission can adjust to suit the driver’s individual driving style, thus maintaining an optimal engine speed at all times. And for the first time in the BMW X this is now combined with the Auto Start/Stop function which switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traffic lights), to further reduce overall fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration uses the kinetic energy generated during braking to recharge the battery. The electrical energy produced can then be used to power comfort features and other vehicle functions. Meticulously calibrated technologies such as Valvetronic, electronic power steering and enhanced aerodynamics contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption and simultaneously increase performance. With BMW EfficientDynamics and the new BMW X you can experience the technologies of tomorrow, today.

TECHNOLOGY, NOT MAGIC.Rewriting the laws of physics may seem like magic. For BMW engineers, it’s simply the result of their newest innovations. Like for example the optional Performance Control: a BMW technology that distributes the optimal amount of torque to each rear wheel through targeted interventions into the engine and brake management, to achieve even greater driving dynamics. Or the optionally available Dynamic Damper Control: the dampers emit electronic data four hundred times a second so that the suspension is always exactly tuned to suit the current driving conditions. This technology enables the driver to choose between a normal, sporty or particularly dynamic ride (Sport Plus) via the Driving Dynamics Control button and enjoy navigating even the most unfavourable roads.

A REAL TEAM PLAYER.Great teams work like clockwork. Just like the new BMW X , where every element links up to form a harmonious whole. The typical BMW X rear light design including light strips (in conjunction with Xenon headlights) is perfectly integrated into the tailgate of the largest luggage compartment in its class and adds to the elegant overall appearance of the new BMW X . The deep-set windows and raised seating afford even rear passengers a commanding view. The rear seat backrests fold down in a : : split, for even greater variability.

A SELF-ASSURED APPEARANCE – ELEGANTLY DESIGNED.All BMW X models unite durable agility and elegance. The BMW X is no exception. This stunning vehicle’s new look was designed by Erik Goplen, automotive designer at BMW Group Designworks USA in California.

Mr Goplen, for the last three years you have worked on the exterior design of the new BMW X – now we can all see the fruits of your labour. What kind of impression do you hope to make with this design?

We had two main aims: the new BMW X needed to be instantly recognisable, fi rstly as a member of the BMW X family and secondly, as the successor of the previous BMW X . Every BMW X vehicle represents powerful agility and a very sturdy presence on the road. We generate this impression through the use of typical X proportions like the upright kidney grilles, shortened bonnet and steeply slanted rear window. We also wanted to make the BMW X appear more adult, more mature.

In demand18 19

What tells the observer that they’re looking at the new BMW X ?

First of all, the size. Then of course the typical BMW X characteristics, as well as similarities the new BMW X shares with its predecessor. The classic ‘three-eyed face’ of the BMW X family is very distinctive – the double round headlights and the fog lights, which are situated particularly high up and towards the edges of the vehicle’s front end. From the side, you can see that the Hofmeister kink is positioned higher than it is on other models, which lends the windows a special X aesthetic. The rear lights are still T-shaped, and together with the optional Xenon headlights they’re very much in keeping with classic BMW style.

BMWs are famous for their carefully crafted details. Which parts are you particularly fond of?

Oh, there are so many. One particularly striking design element of the new BMW X is its clear side contours, which curve upwards sharply after the front wheel arch and carry on through to the rear lights. An additional contour runs along the rear wheel arch to further emphasise the vehicle’s powerful agility. Details such as the side indicators have also been refi ned – in this case through integration in specially moulded casings.

I found the unusual contours on the bonnet particularly eye-catching. What’s your take on it?

Yes, the bonnet is a real work of art, as far as modern metal working techniques are concerned. It makes a really strong statement, you could just about hang it on your wall at home! The strongly defi ned lines really bring out the sporty and robust appearance of the front end – they’re a distinguishing feature of all BMW X vehicles.

What other distinguishing BMW features does the new BMW X have?

Well, take for example the typical double round headlights. They feature a clear and simplifi ed design and are topped off by distinctive chrome-coloured ‘eyebrows’. They give the vehicle a more determined look. Plus of course there are the classic convex-concave surfaces which create a shimmering interplay between light and shadow.

Vision becomes reality: BMW Vision Effi cientDynamics. In BMW plans to present a + sports car made in Germany that will feature ground-breaking plug-in-hybrid technology combining sports-car performance with compact-class consumption. Highlighting BMW’s position as the world’s leading manufacturer of exceptionally sporty yet incomparably effi cient vehicles. The BMW Vision Effi cientDynamics test model has a latest-generation fully hybrid system with an output of kW. A three-cylinder turbo diesel ( kW, Nm torque) as well as a hybrid synchronous engine on the front axle ( Nm), and fully hybrid drive system on the rear axle ( Nm), give the vehicle a range of up to kilometres This sports car’s dynamism to fuel consumption is quite simply without equal.

www.bmw.com/Effi cientDynamics

BMW was one of the fi rst manufacturers to pursue the goal of effi cient driving technologies, as part of our multiple award-winning sustainability strategy. BMW Effi cientDynamics represents the most comprehensive package of innovative technologies for reducing fuel consumption and emissions – while simultaneously increasing driving dynamics – that is currently in standard production. With it, BMW has been able to reduce the CO

emissions of its entire fl eet by approximately percent since . models produce less than

g of CO per kilometre, and BMW has already rolled out more than two million vehicles equipped with

Effi cientDynamics. BMW intends to achieve a further % reduction by .

BMW EfficientDynamicsLess emissions. More driving pleasure.

Auto Start/Stop function (for eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic). The Auto Start/Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (e.g. at traf c lights) to further reduce overall fuel consumption. A signal (Start Stop) in the display indicates that the function is active. For the rst time in its class, the Auto Start/Stop function is now available for an automatic transmissions.

Eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic. The particularly smooth gear shifts of the new eight-speed automatic transmission produce greater engine ef ciency at every speed. The result: a reduction in fuel consumption and more comfortable gear changes. The new eight-speed automatic transmission is one of the rst to be combined with the Auto Start/Stop function. In short: a supremely comfortable drive underscored by signi cantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

Direct fuel injection. In a BMW, the injectors are located directly above the spark plugs. They inject fuel with extreme precision and pressure to ensure particularly ef cient combustion.

Electric Power Steering. In comparison with conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electric power steering support only uses energy during actual steering. When driving straight ahead the electronic motor is inactive.

Brake Energy Regeneration. Brake Energy Regeneration means that the generator (alternator) usually only generates electricity when the driver takes their foot off either the accelerator or brakes – previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery.

BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS – TAKES SO LITTLE, YET GIVES SO MUCH.Different paths to the same destination: unmistakable BMW driving pleasure. Under the auspices of the BMW Ef cientDynamics project, BMW is continuously developing innovative systems that will bring us nearer to the goal of emission-free mobility in the long term. Driving pleasure has not, of course, been forgotten. It’s being pursued in four different ways at once. The optimisation of models with conventional diesel and petrol engines continues apace. Meanwhile the BMW Hydrogen has impressively demonstrated just how much potential there is in the combination of a hydrogen drive and combustion engine. In early BMW launched its rst production models with hybrid drive: the BMW ActiveHybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid X . Both models offer exemplary ef ciency and dynamism to an unequalled degree. Based on the BMW Concept ActiveE with its innovative % electric drive system, a whole new form of dynamism is set to be launched in spring – a model that will pave the way for the emission-free mobility of the future. And nally, a completely new vehicle concept targeted at meeting the need for sustainable mobility in fast-growing urban societies could soon become reality in the shape of the Megacity Vehicle (MCV), specially developed as part of project i.

Chassis and safety32 33

“I STAY COOL, NO MATTER WHAT COMES MY WAY.”

Unadulterated joy is being able to drive along the most challenging roads without compromising on safety. In the new BMW X , this is made possible largely by innovative suspension technologies. At BMW, we’ve given our all so that you can enjoy even the most dynamic drives in comfort.

THE FEELING YOU GET DRIVING THE NEW BMW X IS INDESCRIBABLE. READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW IT’S PRODUCED.A weight distribution of nearly : between the front and rear axles keeps the new BMW X right on track. Its neutral self-steering properties, directional stability and excellent traction culminate in a driving experience of unparalleled intensity. In addition, its new five-arm rear axle further improves the responsiveness of the dampers to provide a supremely comfortable ride. And that’s not all…

xDrive. Slippery leaves on wet roads, snow and ice – regardless of the road surface quality, the intelligent xDrive four-wheel drive system and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensure that your BMW always delivers directional stability and outstanding traction. Using data such as the steering angle or wheel rotation speeds, xDrive reacts immediately upon detecting a tendency to over- or understeer, and employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to fl exibly distribute drive power between the axles in only fractions of a second, ensuring optimum road adhesion.

Driving Dynamics Control. The new BMW X can fulfi l your every wish at the push of a button. Choose between the settings Normal, Sport and Sport Plus to change the responsiveness of the accelerator and the power steering, for example (available in conjunction with variable sports steering, Dynamic Damper Control or eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic).

Variable sports steering. The steering ratio is constantly adjusted depending on the steering movement, so you can enjoy increased agility on winding roads, more safety at higher speeds, and great fl exibility when parking. Plus with the help of Servotronic, this optional system continuously adjusts the steering ratio and steering force to suit the driving situation.

Performance Control. This optional system works together with xDrive, BMW’s intelligent four-wheel drive system, to improve handling in bends by dynamically intervening in specifi c engine and braking processes. Performance Control optimises the management of engine power during turns by applying the brake slightly to the inside wheel while simultaneously increasing drive to the outside wheel. This results in increased dynamism on winding roads and sensational traction.

Dynamic Damper Control. This optionally available system adjusts the damper characteristics to suit the driving conditions and road quality. It guarantees constant controllability and safety.

Page 18: BMW X3 Catalogue

THE LATEST BMW TECHNOLOGIES –UNPARALLELED SAFETY.The new BMW X surrounds you with cutting-edge technologies for every eventuality. Superb handling and intelligent, networked suspension control systems such as DSC with the innovative xDrive four-wheel drive system are standard. Drivers benefit from the very latest technologies that provide optimal support at all times. You’ll feel safe and protected no matter where your journey takes you.

Chassis and safety34 35

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Highly acute sensors constantly assess the vehicle’s movements in real time and optimise directional stability and traction, if necessary, by intervening in the engine and brake management systems. In addition, the BMW X features the Hill-Start assist, which acts to stop the vehicle rolling downhill for one-and-a-half seconds after the foot brake is released. Consequently the vehicle is easier to control in tricky situations, and thus safer and that much more fun to drive.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) lets the new BMW X negotiate the steepest downhill runs automatically and safely at just about walking pace, without the driver having to brake. HDC comes standard and can be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). This sub-function of the Dynamic Stability Control offers unsurpassed traction in sporty driving situations. With one-touch activation, traction mode allows an increased amount of controlled wheel slip, and improves acceleration on loose snow or sand as the wheels spin lightly. DTC delays the intervention of Dynamic Stability Control even on asphalt, so you get to enjoy controlled drifts and a more intensive driving experience.

Adaptive headlights with variable light distribution, incl. turning lights. These illuminate bends by optimally adjusting the swivelling headlights as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel. The turning light in the fog lights is automatically activated by the steering angle or when the indicator is switched on, even when the vehicle is at a standstill.

Standard equipment Optional equipment

Airbags and the rest of the passive safety elements in your BMW all make up one perfectly coordinated system. Six airbags are installed for precise protection: one each for the driver and front passenger, continuous head airbags in the front and rear, and side airbags in the front. The integrated rollover sensor provides additional passenger protection, while the passive bonnet improves pedestrian safety.

BMW restraint system for the driver and front passenger, comprises -point safety belts combined with integral tensioners and force limiters as well as active headrests. So in the event of a collision, passengers are held safely in their seats and the risk of whiplash is reduced.

Passenger cell. The system of members and node connections in the functionally constructed body structure combined with the strategic deployment of high-strength materials delivers maximum passive safety in front, side or rear impacts. Defined deformation zones mean that the body structure can absorb impact energy, increasing passenger protection.

Runflat tyres. Reinforced side walls prevent the tyres from completely collapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops. The Tyre Puncture Warning System (TPWS) notifies the driver of any tyre problems. A minor loss in pressure is signalled by a light in the instrument cluster, while any greater loss is additionally signalled with an acoustic warning.

This “Cover Art” display adds the cover for any song and album, for fast and convenient reference (function also available for other music devices). The USB/audio interface also makes it easy to update a part of the vehicle software in your BMW via a USB stick. This provides access to the complete range of functions supported by new mobile phone and music player models.

Internet. Whether you need to check the balance in your bank account, place a bid on eBay or look something up in Wikipedia, the BMW ConnectedDrive Internet option (via a compatible mobile phone that supports Bluetooth tethering) ensures that you can do whatever you need to do online. To enable you to surf to your heart’s content, the iDrive Controller in the centre console doubles as a computer mouse.

Information on compatible devices can be found at www.bmw.co.za/bluetooth Information on the software update can be found at www.bmw.com/update

Infotainment. The infotainment package encompasses services with a technological or media orientation such as the USB interface with extended functionality, that supplies drivers with the same level of information and entertainment that you would find at home or in the office.

Head-Up Display. The Head-Up Display is optionally available, to help you keep your eye on the surrounding traf c. Relevant driving information is projected directly in the driver’s eld of vision via a multi-coloured TFT display, showing you for example the vehicle’s speed or navigational directions.

High-beam assist. Avoid dazzling other road users – the optional high-beam assistant detects sources of light in the vehicle’s vicinity and switches between high and low beam as traf c allows. When the system is active an image sensor behind the rear-view mirror monitors traf c and light conditions. The function then uses these sensor images to decide whether or not the high-beam lights can be switched on. The high-beam is switched to low anytime traf c is detected ahead, and when ambient light is suf cient.

Safety. These BMW ConnectedDrive services are safety technologies that make a significant contribution to reducing the risks that road traffic poses to BMW drivers and their passengers – such as the Head-Up Display.

Eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic40 41

AN INGENIOUS COMBINATION.

Engineer Jan Kretschmer

has been head of BMW’s

automatic transmission

department since 2008.

He started at BMW back

in 1994 and has been

responsible for projects

such as the Sequential

Manual Gearbox (SMG).

Seldom has a new transmission received such high praise as the new BMW eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic. A thoroughly radical concept delivers a new dimension of comfort and effi ciency. In the new BMW X this innovative transmission even includes the Auto Start/Stop function.

About four years ago, a group of BMW engineers achieved a major breakthrough with an ingenious number combination. They worked out the one optimal confi guration out of ten million possible variations. Each new BMW X with the new eight-speed automatic transmission benefi ts from their discovery. Globally, the transmission will save fuel thanks to a whole new level of effi ciency. For the fi rst time, the BMW X with automatic transmission now consumes the

same or even less fuel than the equivalent model with a manual transmission – regardless of the engine type. Jan Kretschmer heads up BMW’s development team for automatic transmissions and is of course intimately familiar with the magic combination: “It is the only possible confi guration of four gear sets and fi ve shift elements for an eight-speed transmission with this high degree of effi ciency.”

Revolution not evolution: in planning and developing this transmission our engineers were given more scope to bring in new ideas at every stage than ever before. Where once there was only a blank page, now there is a superlative gear train in shining metal. Planetary gears and shift elements are packed together as in the most intricate clockwork. But although it has a higher number of gears and a host of new functions, this new transmission does not take up any more room than preceding models. And although it is tougher, it is not heavier. For drivers, the most signifi cant new feature is the addition of the Auto Start/Stop function. The engine switches off the moment it has braked to a standstill (or when the Auto Hold function is activated) and stays off, as long as the driver’s foot is still on the pedal. As soon as the driver releases the brake, the engine immediately restarts and they can continue driving. Nothing remarkable for drivers, but for engineers this is a complicated development task. In order to start up fast, the transmission needs suffi cient oil

pressure which in turn is usually generated by the running of the engine. So for the Auto Start/Stop function, the engineers equipped the transmission with a compact pressure accumulator. The power stored there rapidly connects or separates the clutch plates needed for the car to start up. It’s a clever development for maximum effi ciency: in conjunction with the transmission’s high degree of effi ciency and broad spread of transmission ratios, the Auto Start/Stop function saves around seven to eight percent fuel. But the new eight-speed automatic is not only more effi cient than other transmissions in its class – one of its main characteristics is the almost unsurpassable level of comfort it provides. All new BMW X models are equipped with the same automatic transmission that can be found in the BMW Series Saloon, albeit with slightly different dimensions.

Gear shifts in the new BMW X are incredibly soft and discreet. Just as any experienced driver would, the transmission stays in a low gear ahead of bends so as to best accelerate out of them. And on long downhill stretches, gears are carefully changed down so as to make use of the engine’s braking force. These sorts of capabilities result from the work put in by Jan Kretschmer and his team. Using the vehicle sensors, they analysed every on-road set of circumstances and defi ned the appropriate gear, an exacting process of calibration that the BMW engineers have carried out for each new BMW X engine version individually. Comfortable and effi cient, the new eight-speed automatic transmission is also exceptionally dynamic. When needed it can switch gears faster than a racing driver does, and can jump right over as many gears as necessary. It can even switch directly from eighth right down to second gear. This level of precision and effi ciency is the constant companion of everyone who drives the new BMW X .

All dimensions in the technical drawings are given in millimetres. Luggage compartment capacity – , litres.

The figure quoted includes a % full tank, kg for the driver and kg for luggage. Unladen

weight applies to vehicles with standard equipment. Optional equipment may increase this

figure. The actual overall trailer weight may not exceed the max. permitted trailer load plus the max.

permitted tow bar download. BMW recommends the use of RON super unleaded petrol. Unleaded RON and higher

with a maximum ethanol content of % (E ) may also be used. Output and fuel consumption

figures apply to RON fuel.

Diesel engines meet the EU emissions standard. Fuel consumption is determined in

accordance with the ECE driving cycle ( / /EU), which consists of approximately one third

urban traffic and two thirds extra-urban driving (based on the distance covered). CO emissions

are measured in addition to fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is determined relative to

vehicles with standard equipment. Optional equipment (e.g. wider tyres) can have a significant

impact on fuel consumption. Height including roof aerial is , mm. The BMW X xDrive i has a track width of , mm at the front and , mm at the rear.

Car manufacturing requires a great deal of water, which is why we’ve developed an intelligent circulatory system for our factories that ensures water is re-used as often as possible. The dream of a manufacturing process that does not produce any waste water has already been made a reality at our engine plant in Steyr. In , , engines were manufactured without producing a single drop of waste water.

Sustainability is taken very seriously at the BMW Group. For this reason, we prioritise environmentally-friendly methods of transport such as rail and shipping and work towards capacity optimisation. Each year, we cover around . billion tonne kilometres transporting materials and new vehicles. Of this, % of the total transported volume is delivered by sea – which benefi ts both road traffi c and the environment.

The BMW Group has their sights set on tomorrow. For more information visit
