Bluebill FLYER
April 2020
By Clint Webb
Who could have imagined just a short time ago that we would be in
an unimaginable crisis that threatens to change our lives and the
world forever? I know we are all doing the all the things that our
health experts advise, including social distancing. These measures
have necessitated suspending most of our Bluebill activities, as we
interact with many agencies and organizations that have been
forced to close for the foreseeable future.
Before all this, we have been seeing some changes in important
leadership positions in our Bluebill operations. Calvin Williams is
taking over from Ed Berthiaume the leadership role for our Kitsap
World Vision Essential Supplies Program. Thank you Calvin, and
thank you Ed! As most of you know, Bob Reasoner is moving to
Silverdale. Dave and Twyla Jackson have volunteered to carry on
with the work that Bob started with the STEM programs in our
schools. A big thanks to Bob, Dave and Twyla!

Those are vitally important changes in our leadership. Now we need
more Bluebills to step up and join our leadership team. Michael and
Mea Graham are moving back east. They have been involved in
many facets of Bluebills including our quarterly socials, builders,
Dove House Golf Tournament, Essential Supplies, and more. They
didn’t have titles, but they took responsibility when it was needed. If
you would be willing to volunteer to help in any of these areas, call or
email myself or Myron Vogt. Our contact info is in this Flyer. Many of
you are already involved in these activities, but we need more.
Finally, we need a new Co-Chair to replace myself. Pat and I are
moving to a retirement community in Des Moines (WA) that has
available all kinds of facilities to help if needed, as we head out to
pasture. Co-Chair is a job to be coveted, as the other Co-Chair is
Barb Berthiaume, who actually does everything. Mainly, you get your
picture on the front page of the Flyer and occasionally write one of
these Chair Reports.
Actually, one should be knowledgeable about the Bluebill programs
and participate in the monthly leadership team meeting. Also, help to
organize special projects as they come along. I was involved, with a
small group, in helping to create the Peninsula Support Organization
to help in funding Bluebill projects. I also helped organize last year’s
book sale and Independent Aging programs. Also, just pitch in, from
time to time, to help out when you see a need, such as the Dove
House Golf Tournament and in the warehouse. So, in everything you
do, you are doing it with other committed Bluebills, which is always a
pleasure, and helping the organization achieve its purpose.
We are asking you to please, please, consider volunteering for one
of these areas. Guaranteed, you’ll be glad you did!
THANK YOU!! Clint

BLUEBILL BUDGET FOR 2020 ON HOLD
I have been advised that at this time, Boeing is not allocating any
money for organizations such as Bluebills. Normally, there is enough
money from Boeing to pay for county-located recruitment and training
and for food for our quarterly meetings. This comes to about $4000 per
year. So far, because of CV-19, we have not had any expenses in
2020. I anticipate that the July golf/meeting will be held. The
Leadership Team will figure how we want to handle that.
Unfortunately, Boeing was fighting a tough situation prior to the CV-19
onset, which only made the problem worse. Perhaps by the end of the
year or by 2021 things will get back to normal, so I hope we can just
ride out this year as best we can. This is not the worst of the problems
facing everyone.
Thanks for your help,
Myron Vogt,
Bluebill Central Leadership Council Chairman

Sequim WV Essential Supplies Recipient Donates Supplies in the
Fight Against COVID-19
The following email chain was sent to us from Larry Lang, our former Regional
Coordinator for World Vision for Clallam County:
Subject: Re: N95 masks in previous donations
Thanks very much Michael,
This is great news for our emergency services workers, and wonderful for you
thinking of this. I'll forward your message to all of our agencies to see if they
have PPE available that they can share.
All the best, Larry

Dear Larry,
A year or two ago, knowing we had some remodeling and painting projects
coming up, we got masks from the World Vision/Boeing Bluebills. When you
order a “box” or a “case” sometimes you get more than you need.
So… we looked in storage and were able to do this---
We recently donated 80 N95 masks, and 20 surgical quality masks that we
got from you to our local Sequim Emergency Operations Center, as well as a
case of medium sized latex gloves we got from you.
They were VERY grateful. They referred to the N95 masks as “pure gold” we
were giving them.
I know it would take some looking back into history, but perhaps if you (and
coordinators in other areas) still have your records of which NP orgs asked for
those masks and gloves “way back when”, perhaps you could send an email
to those orgs reminding them of what was sent to them and asking them to
donate those masks to a local hospital or Emergency Ops Center for first
responders, health care workers, etc., to use.
Just an idea on tracking down resources to fight COVID-19 that some non-
profits you serve might have in storage and not remember they have them.

GRAND MARSHAL FOR THE RHODY PARADE
This year Bluebills has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the Port
Townsend Rhody Parade on May 16th. This is the major parade event in
Jefferson County and has about 80-90 groups in it.
So all of you who used to help build floats for your high school homecoming
parades or whatever, start thinking about this.
We will be forming a committee to work on what we want to do. Anyone with
any ideas at this point, let me know. A major problem, as I see it, is getting a
trailer or whatever to make a float on.
Myron
The latest word is that the Parade is still On!

Trestle Table
The “Special Assignment” article in last month’s Flyer reported on Bluebill’s support toward the creation of a “Renaissance Garden” at the Heronswood Preserve, next door to the S’Klallam reservation. A 25 foot by 5 foot trestle style “fern table” is a central feature in the garden’s wooded fern stumpery, honoring the S’Klallam who worked in the Port Gamble timber mills in the early 1900s.
Greg Devault applied his old-school carpentry skills, constructing the trestles in his woodworking shop. The king post in the middle is 3 - 2X6s laminated together. The cross braces each consist of 2 - 2X6s laminated together. Hand cut mortise and tenon joints are used between the cross braces and the king post. The cross braces are held snugly into place by draw boring. Boards at the very bottom and very top are 2X4s that are pinned into the cross braces.
The 7 trestles, each weighing 75 pounds, were delivered to Heronswood, where John White assisted Greg with the assembly, using stretchers to join the trestles together with mortise and tenon joints. A variety of ferns will be growing on the table, interspersed with authentic mill camp dining accoutrements, tins and crockery.

Kitsap Builders
Is it a Ramp or a Bridge?
This Poulsbo client was ready to be released from rehab, but couldn’t come home without a means of getting in/out of the house. We originally suggested an L-shape ramp terminating near the garage, but the steepness of the driveway raised concerns about her being able to get up it in a wheelchair. The solution was to come straight out to the top of the driveway. The eye plays tricks here. This “ramp” had no slope to it at all. It was more like a bridge.

More Ramps
This ramp in Bremerton was a joint effort with Bluebills and Kiwanis.
3 of the 5 Kiwanis volunteers are also Bluebills.
Leonard Hale, Chip Godfrey, and John Read built these outdoor and indoor ramps in South Kitsap.

Builders Status
The slow month of March reflects the Coronavirus, which essentially has
put everything on hold. We are still taking job requests, but they are
deferred indefinitely. This has also affected our recruiting and training plans
for builders and other interested parties. We had hoped to hold one of
these events in each county during the first half of the year. I hope we can
do this sometime this fall.
Thanks, Myron
