The Equilibrium Theory - Todorov

Opening Sequence

Stereotypical town fire truck with a Dalmatian and waving fireman helps ensure safety for residents and therefore shows the audience a happy and friendly environment where little goes wrong in this community. This helps the optimism for the beginning of the Equilibrium theory.

Children are often used as pawns in movies to help portray happiness and show innocence in society. The elderly lolly pop lady ensures the children's safety crossing the road and is obviously trusted. This portrays this microcosm as always wanting to do more and constantly volunteering which helps encourage the Equilibrium Theory.

Opening Sequence

The American dream consists of a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence. This dream is used in many different books and films including of mice and men this is key because it portrays most Americans hopes and dreams for the future. Because this couple has already realised this it is used as a way to portray optimism for other people, therefore part of the Equilibrium Theory.

Opening Sequence

As the old gentleman struggles with the watering hose the struggle suggests that something bad is going to happen this links in with the Equilibrium Theory because things are most probably turning for the worst.

Opening Sequence

The old gentleman is now on the floor and is in obvious pain, this goes along perfectly with the Equilibrium Theory since something in the perfect town has gone terrifyingly wrong.
