What is linguistics?

In its simplest sense, linguistics is the study of human language. It is a broad, interdisciplinary field, with exciting applications in disciplines ranging from advertising, law, and literature -- to education, speech pathology, and neuroscience -- to artificial intelligence, politics, and language teaching and learning.

What do linguists study? • The structure of spoken, signed, and written

language(s) • How languages vary and change• How children and adults acquire language• The connections between language, culture,

society, and identity• How to help individuals with communication

disorders• How to recognize and respond to linguistic

prejudice and profiling• The interaction between technology and

human language

Career opportunities for linguists: • Education (TESOL, foreign language

instruction, educational research, teacher training, etc.)

• Speech-language pathology• Translation/Interpreting• Computer science (natural language

processing, machine translation, artificial intelligence, etc.)

Bloomsburg University Linguistics League (BULL):

BULL is an undergraduate association for students interested in language and linguistics. Along with guest lectures and film showings, BULL organizes TongueFest, an annual event celebrating linguistic diversity.

Research Opportunities:

Central and northeastern PA dialects are yet to be explored in depth by linguists. Therefore, there are numerous opportunities for researchers to contribute to our knowledge of variation in this area.

Linguistics research projects at BU have focused on …

high school English classroom• Language, gender, and sexuality in rural PA

communities• and much more!

Students are encouraged to collaborate on research projects with faculty members, develop their own projects, apply for research funding, and share their findings at on- and off-campus events.

Linguistics Minor Requirements: • 6 courses (18 units) • Must include courses with at least three different

prefixes
