Before using the “Egg”-cellent Comprehension Kit, make copies ofthis Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide, cut apart the reproducibles,and file the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it fromour Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com.

Assembling the “Egg”-cellent Comprehension Kit Cut apart the Fiction Question Cards and the Nonfiction QuestionCards and store them in zippered plastic bags. The Question Cardsare color coded to be used with either fiction or nonfiction readingmaterials: Those with green backgrounds are for fiction materials andthose with blue backgrounds are for nonfiction materials—dark bluebackgrounds for general topics and light blue backgrounds forbiography and autobiography. In addition, the feathers on the cardsare color coded as follows for different types of questions to enableyou to select the reading comprehension strategies that you want toreinforce:

• General direct recall—purple feather • Making connections—light blue feather• Predicting—dark blue feather• Picturing—pink feather• Inferring—red feather• Questioning—orange feather • Summarizing—yellow feather• Synthesizing—light green feather• Evaluating/applying—dark green feather

Introducing and Using the “Egg”-cellent Comprehension Kit Choose a reading selection that your class has already read. Make a copy of the Our “Egg”-cellent Reading Selection Reproducible,write the title and author of the selection on it, and post it on yourclassroom whiteboard. Roll and tuck the Question Cards you wish to use inside the Golden Plastic Eggs, then place them inside theVelvet Bag.

Indicate that the Bag contains Golden Eggs and each Egg contains aquestion to help students better understand the things they haveread. Have a student come forward, draw an Egg from the Bag, readthe question aloud, and answer it. Discuss the answer and ask foradditional information if necessary. Continue with the remaining Eggs.Once you have demonstrated how to use the “Egg”-cellentComprehension Kit, use the Question Cards and Golden Eggs withdifferent reading selections to hold whole-group discussions or usethem for small group or center activities.

“Egg”-cellent Break-Out DiscussionsUse the “Egg”-cellent Comprehension Kit to organize small groupdiscussions of a reading selection: Make a copy of the Our Egg-cellent

Reading Selection Reproducible, write the title and author of theselection on it, and post it on your classroom whiteboard. Choose theQuestion Cards that support the skills you want to reinforce, rollthem up, tuck them inside the Eggs, and put the Eggs into the VelvetBag. Divide your class into small groups and have each group read theselection. Choose a student from each group to come forward andselect an Egg. Each group discusses their question, takes notes, andchooses a student to report their discussion to the entire class.

“Egg”-cellent Writing PromptsProvide great writing prompts that will work with any literatureselection: Select the questions that support the comprehensionstrategies you are teaching, roll them up, and tuck them inside theEggs. Put the Eggs into the Velvet Bag and put them in your writingcenter. Post several copies of the Our Egg-cellent Reading SelectionReproducible in the center with the names of selections students canwrite about. Each student selects an Egg, writes the question at thetop of his or her paper along with the name of the selection he or sheis writing about, and writes a paragraph or brief composition inresponse to the question.

Creating Additional CardsIf you wish to create additional cards, copy the Blank Fiction Cardsand the Blank Nonfiction Cards Reproducibles onto the appropriatecolor paper (green for fiction, blue for non-fiction—darker blue forgeneral nonfiction and light blue for biography/autobiography.) Thencolor in the feathers to indicate the type of comprehension strategyquestion using the code above. Write your questions on the cards, cutthem apart, and roll them up just as you did the Question Cards.

Writing “Egg”-cellent QuestionsWriting questions is a helpful way for students to work on theircomprehension skills: Copy the Blank Fiction Cards Reproducible andthe Blank Nonfiction Cards Reproducible and color code them for thequestion types you want your students to create. Leave the questionarea of the cards blank. Roll up the blank question cards, tuck theminside the Eggs, and put the Eggs into the Velvet Bag. Place the Bagin a center along with a pencil, scrap paper, and a box or bag labeledOur Egg-cellent Questions. Instruct students to take an Egg out ofthe Bag, open it to see what kind of question to write, write a draft ofa comprehension question on the scratch paper, then copy the finalquestion onto a card. Tell students to place their cards into the boxor bag for you to review and potentially add to your class collection ofEgg-cellent comprehension questions.

Egg HuntOn a day when some movement may help your class to focus better,create an egg hunt for students to practice their comprehension skills:Pair up students to hunt together so that they can have paireddiscussions. Tell students what reading selection they will be discussing,and post a completed copy of the Our “Egg”-cellent Reading SelectionReproducible on your board. Select the questions you want to use, rollthem up, tuck them inside the Eggs, and hide the Eggs throughout theroom, or perhaps on your playground. You will want to set some rules forthe hunt—such as no running and students are to put all objects backwhere they find them—then have the pairs hunt for an Egg. Once theyfind an Egg, indicate that they are to return to their seats and eitherdiscuss the question in the Egg or write about it. Then ask pairs to sharetheir discussion or writing with the class.
