KAMBOJA PRESSBKKABF CO-OPOnline Festival 2020
In the beginning of our career as a business unit as well as creative practitioner, we produced conventional photo book. Meaning, we printed it digitally due to economical reason as a newbie. That printing method is also common among our friends due to its affordable price and its ability to print in small quantity. In 2017, we went to Bangkok, Thailand, for an art project. At that time, we met Lee Anantawat from Poop Press. She introduced us to Risograph printing method. Its efficiency, eco-friendliness, and uniqueness make us fall in love with this machine.
Our interest continued as we met Irfan Hendrian from IH Studio in Bandung, Indonesia, as one of Risograph pioneer in Indonesia. In the late 2017, supervised by Irfan Hendrian, we produced our first Risograph photo book called Klik. After that, we decided to focus on the exploration of photography through Risograph printing method. Now, we have produced around 10 photo books and several titles of art print.
This online publication is our attempt to introduce you to this printing method. By collaborating with Indonesian and Thai artists, we bring you the joy of producing art with this machine. This zine is also a celebration of BKKABF Online Festival 2020 as online-based art book fair and us as global community.

What is Risograph?
Print with Risographfor Dummies
Risograph is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective printer, which uses soy-based inks to produce unique outcomes. Each stencil (master) is made from thermal sensitive paper and unlike offset printing, it only takes a single print for screen to be fully inked and ready to print thousands of copies. Risograph is extremely energy efficient and generates a minimal amount of waste.
The underlying technology of a Risograph is very similar to that of screen printing. The original image file is sent to the machine and it is burnt onto a master, the master is then wrapped around a print drum. This drum then rotates at high speed which pushes the ink through the screen and onto the paper as it is sent through the machine.
Your artwork should be setup as separate greyscale PDF files, one for each color layer, similar to the way artwork is prepared. For screen printing. Risograph cannot print full bleed. There is a 5mm border on A3 prints.
A3 paper size297mm x 420mmA3 printable area:287mm x 410mm
A4 paper size297mm x 210mmA4 printable area:287mm x 200mm
Please include at least 3mm bleed on your print ready artwork if you need full bleed prints.
Tips to Print Text with Risograph
Get to Know Risograph Ink and Machine
Deal with Paper
When printing multiple layers, avoid heavy ink coverage at the paper feeding edge as the Risograph feeds in paper with a set of rubber rollers. Heavy inking and more than two colors will leave track marks on your print. The ink also may dry slower or faster depending on the quality of the paper.
Risograph is not perfect like an inkjet or laser printer. The prints will probably look different from what you see on your computer screen. The prints will differ very slightly from one another. Printing more than one color will require more than one pass and is best to assume that misregistration will occur. Include trapping where necessary.
Risograph can take paper stock from 40gsm to 400gsm with minimum paper size 100mm x 170mm to maximum 297mm x 420mm.
Risograph can only take uncoated paper.
Varnish coat maybe needed for some purposes like business card or book cover.

It is best to set your text under 12pt in black (100% K) to get the most solid print possible.
Do not set type in Photoshop (raster) as that will cause pixelation.
Do not set type below 6pt.
Note: When using without text, the printer is not reading it as text, but rather the pixels around the text, se be careful with percentages of color.

It is not possible to cover the full printable area with 100% ink density as it causes paper jams. Large areas of block color will not print out evenly, it will also cause print marks. It is, however, possible to full the entire printed area with an ink density of around 75%.
