NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

It’s already March, and it feels like time is flying by. The cold and windy nights make me want spring to get here even sooner. Hope the next 20 days go by fast. First day of spring is March 20th. Can’t wait to see more sun and less wind and rain. Take a look at Out & About Town, there may be some things you may be interested in doing. It’s time for us to come out of the house and mingle. If anyone is interested in joining the Breeze Way group we meet the first Monday of the month at 3:00 pm in the clubhouse. Come up and meet us. Can’t wait to see some new faces. We are always looking for new ideas. Just wanted to let you know that Sunday Coffee is looking for volunteers to host. If possible try to help out one Sunday, they really need your help. It would be a shame if Sunday Coffee ended, so many homeowners enjoy it.

If you could relive one day of your lifewhich day would you choose and why?

Bonnie Holborow: “I would relive my wedding day because it led to having three wonderful daughters followed by five precious grandchildren.”

Dan Russo: “My dad was in the US Navy during WW II on a LST ship. There was a preserve with WW II LST ships in Tennessee and I wanted to take him there for a visit. We talked about going because I wanted him to share his experiences on the ship with me. It

never came to pass. I would go back to that day and bring him there.”

A Super Thank You

Once again the residents of Sea Breeze extend their sincere thanks to Toll Brothers for hosting a Super Bowl Party. Almost 100 community members enjoyed heroes and salads. Many generous people made chili, delicious desserts or brought chips and dips. A special thanks to Chris and Arlene DeSarno for organizing the event. The game may have lacked luster but the celebration did not.

CIVIC AFFAIRSGROUP UPDATE

Since our last update there have been many new developments.

1. Under our Concerned Citizens of Lacey Coalition, we have established a line of communication between Senator Elizabeth Warren’s staff and us. We are sharing information, which will be mutually beneficial to both of us. She has joined the effort to insure Pilgrim, a nuclear plant in Plymouth, MA, will be decommissioned in a safe manner.

2. We have reached out to Senator Booker’s staff to meet with him and discuss our concerns about the decommissioning of Oyster Creek. To date we have not received an appointment.

3. We have reached out to Congressman Kim to address our concerns. He received a package from us giving him the necessary background for a productive meeting. He has agreed to meet with us. A date will be scheduled.

4. We have not received any response from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the approximate 75 questions submitted. To our knowledge, no one has received any response to his or her questions/concerns.

5. Among our concerns is that Holtec or its subsidiary has no experience in decommissioning.

6. We went to the first Lacey School Board 501c3 meeting and frankly are very concerned as to whether it will succeed.

7. On the tax issue, we have been analyzing various surrounding communities with regard to their home tax assessment.

8. We thank those of you who are joining our group. We will add about 10 new members.

Pi DayThere are many days to celebrate in March. Irish and

Italian Christians have March 17th and 19th in honor of St. Patrick and St. Joseph, but eating corn beef and cabbage on the 17th and St. Joseph pastries on the 19th are enjoyed by people of many religions and nationalities. The Internet mentions over 6 dozen dates to celebrate during the month. Of course Fat Tuesday, Earth Day, the First Day of Spring and even my birthday, the Ides of March are well known dates.

As a former math teacher, March 14th was the March date celebrated in school. It’s Pi Day, because the universal approximation for pi is 3.14. Pi is never ending” irrational number. It is used in a variety of formulas to calculate information. It is also the number of times that the diameter of a circle can go around the circumference. That’s it for the math lesson. I chaired a department of a dozen teachers and most of them would encourage their students to do something creative for Pi Day. Students made projects,

posters or would bake large cookies, pies, cakes and pizza and bring their food to class to share, but before the feast commenced the areas, circumferences, central and inscribed angles, arcs, etc. had to be solved. The student who made the goody or project was instructed to have the critical numerical information ready to share for the math part of the lesson. Trying my best to impart knowledge for over 40 years I can assure you that students seldom remember the day I taught them the Pythagorean Theorem, Geometric and Logic Proofs, Trig Curves, Probability, Statistics, etc. but they seem to remember what we did on March 14th, Pi Day. There appears to be more retention when teaching in a light-hearted environment rather than in the typical structured classroom atmosphere. I will celebrate Pi Day without any math but with the knowledge that at least one of my former students will e-mail me or send me a text wishing me a happy Pi Day because they remember.

Sports TalkMarch Madness and the Final Four are coming and

spring training baseball is in full swing. I will have an email sent out about an NCAA Sweet 16 Tournament selection pool like last year in mid-March. Stay alert for this message.

Last month, we began the discussion on paying college athletes in the major revenue sports of football and basketball. I presented the argument in favor of paying those athletes for generating a great amount of money for their schools. This month, I will take the other opinion on why they should not be paid.

A significant number of people feel that athletes are already compensated by their scholarships [ tuition, room, board and fees] which can amount to over $200,000 at a private university and $100,000 at a state school. The cost of paying all scholarship athletes in every sport would place a tremendous financial burden on every school since only a small number of athletic departments actually make

money on athletics, under 20 schools . Supporters of paying athletes say that only those athletes in revenue sports should be paid. However, athletic departments feel all athletes should be treated the same way. Another problem with that statement is the existence of Title IX or gender equity rules which demand equal treatment of both genders. If you paid football and basketball players men and women you would need to also pay approximately an additional 90 female athletes to meet this law’s requirements. This might mean women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, softball and probably tennis athletes would be paid while corresponding men’s teams would not. This does not lead to a harmonious athletic department. Another concern with payment of the revenue sports, does everyone get paid the same amount or is it based on the value created. This comes with its own set of problems.

The last major point and often overlooked involves the status of athletes who are paid as people have suggested. Once this happen the athlete now becomes an employee of the university and all the benefits they get including the scholarship are taxable and they and the school must also contribute to Social Security. If this were to happen some athletes might actually lose money and schools would suffer great financial harm. Lastly, all athletic injuries would fall under the category of Workmen’s Compensation.

As you can see, a decision to pay college athletes comes with a significant number of problems. Only time will tell how this debate turns out but all parties should tread carefully since there will always be the situation known as unforeseen consequences. Stay tuned and get ready for spring.

The answer to last months trivia question:Pete Maravich LSU – When Pete played college

basketball, freshmen were ineligible to participate and there was no three point shot. Not a bad career.

Bonus question- Bill Russell University of San Francisco-Boston Celtics all time greatest basketball winner.

This months trivia questions:1) Who holds the record for most points in NCAA men’s

basketball tournament game ? Name the player and school.

2) Who holds the single-game record for points in a Final Four game ? Name the player and his school.

Men’s Cornhole TournamentOur 2nd Annual Cornhole Tournament was held

on January 22nd at the clubhouse. Thirty-two players representing eight teams of four, participated in a double elimination tournament – meaning 2 losses and you’re out. Basically, after the 8 teams play each other, the teams are then divided into 2 brackets (winner bracket & loser bracket). Play then continues until one team is the only team remaining without 2 losses.

Any spectator would be impressed with the sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed by the players. This contributed to a very successful evening!! After the last bag was thrown, we had our winners – Team 6 (Wayne Mc Mullin, Bob Ascolese, Tony Del Prete and Nat Buro). All had a great time. In my opinion, everyone was a winner that night !

Mardi Gras Facts And TriviaMardi Gras is a holiday that dates back thousands

of years to pagan spring and fertility rites celebrations. When Christianity arrived in Rome, these popular local traditions were incorporated into the new faith because religious leaders thought this would be easier than trying to abolish them. Along with Christianity, Mardi Gras spread from Rome to other European countries including France, Germany and England.

Mardi is the French word for Tuesday, and gras means “fat.” In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday.” Traditionally, the days leading up to Lent were spent consuming rich foods in anticipation of several weeks of eating fish and fasting from many other foods until Easter Sunday.

The first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699 when French explorers landed in what is now Mobile, Alabama, about 144 miles from New Orleans. To this day, Mobile claims to hold the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in North America.

Mardi Gras became the celebration we know today because of a secret society. Until 1837, Mardi Gras had been regularly banned and cancelled because of its destructive,

drunken parties. Then a social society called Mistik Krewe of Comus set out to elevate the chaotic experience by replacing it with lavish balls and parades. Eventually, New Orleans established itself as the Mardi Gras capital of the country.

The wearing of masks is an old and enduring tradition that allows people to shed their inhibitions and fully enjoy the party spirit. Interestingly, the city of New Orleans has an ordinance making it illegal to wear masks except on Mardi Gras, but the masks must be removed by 6:00pm.

The King Cake gets its name from the Bible’s three kings and their visit to the baby Jesus to bring gifts and sweets. Today the cake is baked in the shape of a king’s crown and frosted in the Mardi Gras colors of green, gold and purple. A tiny baby figurine is baked inside the cake, and whoever finds the baby must host the next big party.

The colors of Mardi Gras are rumored to have originated when Grand Duke Alexis visited in 1872 and had beads in those colors handed out to the party goers. The colors were those of his home, and they later were given meanings-purple for justice, gold for power and green for faith.

Destination Iceland: Northern Lights

A few months ago I gave a brief overview of Iceland, not knowing that I would be going there. As I’m writing this, I am in Iceland and was one of the lucky ones to see the spectacular Northern Lights. There was a lot that I didn’t know about the Northern Lights and I wanted to share it with you.

As beautiful and natural as they appear, there is a fascinating science behind them. The lights are caused by great solar storms, tearing across the sun’s surface. The particles released from the sun during these massive storms travel through space and when they hit the earth’s atmosphere, they burn up in a flash of color. The color of the lights depends on where in the earth’s atmosphere the particles burn up and they can be purple, pink, and even red – but the most common shade is green.

Tips and Tricks to See the Northern Lights:1. Wait until dark: They are not very bright and the best location to see them is where it is very dark with no city

lights or light pollution. You may still see them in the city, but they won’t be as vibrant. Summer is not a time to see them, as the days are longer with only a few hours of darkness or just twilight.

2. Check the Aurora Forecast: The Iceland Meteorological Institute publishes a daily/ hourly aurora forecast. They predict the cloud cover and level of aurora activity. There is also a number forecast on a scale of 1-9, but the most common is a scale of 1-6. The night we saw the most activity was 4/6. You need to have a clear night with minimal cloud cover in order to see them. If you are planning a trip to see them, look at a calendar with the moon activity to make sure you’re going during a New Moon for minimal moonlight and brightness.

3. Consider taking a tour: Most tour companies offer Northern Lights Tours by boat, bus or jeep. If you don’t see them, you can take the tour again the next night for free. We took a few tours, but the best was when we took a cab down to the lighthouse. It was away from the city and was very dark. For three nights in a row, we saw the lights. Each night they grew brighter and brighter.

4. Bring a camera: What a lot of people don’t realize is that you need specific settings on your camera in order to photograph the Northern Lights. You can’t just point and shoot your camera or IPhone to get pictures. You will usually get a black screen. A few people who had the latest Samsung phone were able to get some pictures. If you are on a tour, you can ask your guide to help set up your camera with manual settings. There are also some apps that you can download on your phone that may work.

5. Wear warm clothes and be patient: It is imperative that you wear warm clothing. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and are not dependable to be there every night. There were some nights where we waited for almost two hours before we saw anything. Other nights, you can wait for hours and they may never show up. The last night when we went to the lighthouse – I literally opened the car door, looked up and then jumped out of the taxi. There they were all across the sky in full splendor.

Seeing and experiencing the Northern Lights is something that will always stay with me. Now when I look to the sky, even though I’m not seeing them, I can appreciate sunrises, sunsets and clear night skies with brilliant stars even more.

Register Ready

Are you ready for an emergency? Do you have a go bag containing your personal ID, important papers, medication, and telephone numbers of important contacts. There are free self- preparedness guides and checklists available from the Ocean County Office of Emergency Management as well as the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. Your plan should identify places to stay if you must evacuate. Also don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets before an emergency, most shelters are for people and service animals. Always stay tuned to your local radio or television.

Ocean County Office of Emergency Management has a program to help in times of emergency. It is called Register Ready, www.registerready.nj.gov. This site will ask for your personal information including where the emergency personnel can find you. Your height and weight are necessary because first responders should be aware of any condition you have that requires either special equipment or additional personnel to safely evacuate you. You will be asked to provide emergency contact information for an individual with whom they can discuss your situation in the event that an emergency makes this necessary. You can opt out of this if you do not wish to provide that information.

Then you are required to complete evacuation information, such as any sight, hearing, speech or physical impairments. Are you bedridden, mentally/memory impaired, autistic, on dialysis or require constant skilled nursing care. Do you use a cane, walker, standard or motorized wheelchair. Do you have medical equipment that is not easily transportable such as oxygen cylinders, ventilator, suction machine.

This program is free, voluntary and strictly confidential. We all need to be prepared but this program can really benefit those that depend on others for support in times of emergences.

Restaurant Review

Brazzi Wood Fired Trattoria601 Route 72 EastManahawkin, NJ

This is a casual restaurant with a very homey atmosphere. It is BYOB, and they do not take reservations. If you arrive after 6:00pm on a Saturday, there will be a wait of perhaps 20 to 30 minutes. In summer season, the wait will be an hour or more. They serve lunch and dinner in addition to a catering menu.

The pizza is baked in a wood fired brick oven and comes with a wide variety of toppings. They offer a couple of pizzas made with whole wheat flour, Neapolitan style pizza and a Pizzette style which is a very thin cracker type crust.

The lunch menu is served until 3:00pm and includes Stromboli, calzones, wraps, hot and cold hero’s and specialty hero’s like the Al Pacino—sautéed broccoli rabe, sweet sausage, and fresh mozzarella topped with tomato garlic and oil sauce. We visited for dinner around 5:00pm on a Saturday night and were seated immediately. Service was attentive, friendly and efficient. We had the lasagna, pork chop murphy, fusilli with broccoli rabe and sweet sausage and tortellini with a combo of vodka and Bolognese sauce. All were prepared very well, and I must mention that the lasagna noodles were very light so the dish was not dense and heavy. The entrees came with soup or salad, and we opted to try the pasta e fagioli and were not disappointed.

The tables are somewhat close together, and the noise level is high when it is busy, but the food was good and definitely worth a return trip.

Celebrate Your Middle Name

There are days set aside to celebrate important events and some days are for less significant occasions. March 10th is Middle Name Pride Day. There are different reasons to be proud of your middle name. Parents choose their child’s middle name with the same amount of care as their first name. It is often selected to honor a friend or a relative and that person may possess certain characteristics that parents hope their offspring will demonstrate later in life. Also, there are many John Smiths and Mary Jones but it’s your middle name that makes you unique. Do you know why you were given your middle name? If not, March 10th is the day to research why you acquired it

There are more life forms living on your skin than people on the planet.(I think I’ll take two baths a day from now on.)

A human will eat an average of 70 assorted insects and 10 spiders while sleeping.(Now I know why I have a weight problem.)

One in every five adults believes that aliens are hiding in our planet disguised as humans.(I think a few live in Sea Breeze.)

Men are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than women.(Maybe this will keep them off the golf course.)
