The Gold-Salt Trade
• The Sahara covers a large portion of northern Africa
• Because of underground water and camels, trade was possible
• West Africa had gold, but no salt
• Northern Africa had salt, but no gold
• Salt and ideas (such as Islamic beliefs) were brought to West Africa

How might the gold-salt trade facilitate (assist) the spread of Islam?
ANS: When traders met to trade gold and salt, they also traded ideas. Islam was one of those ideas.
Why Did They Need Salt?

Trade Along the Gold-Salt Network
• Arab and Berber traders took saltfrom the Sahara to West Africa in exchange for gold
• African traders also crossed the Sahara to trade gold for salt in North Africa
Who Controlled the Gold?
• Cloth and weapons from Mediterranean ports taken to West Africa
• Powerful rulers in Ghana, Mali, and later, Songhairegulated the gold trade in West Africa and were able to tax gold and salt traders

ANS: They controlled the trade routes and were able to tax salt and gold traders for their transactions
Fun Fact:
• Gold is used in window glass and astronaut helmets: it allows sunlight to pass through and keeps things cool, but reflects infrared rays that could be harmful.
• Gold can be liquefied and injected into patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment is successful seven out of ten times.
