Helping Service Members Transition to Life Back Home - Tools to Help with Resilience, Recovery and Reconnecting (Family Features) Returning home from deployment can be difficult for any service member. However, resources like the Real Warriors Campaign are available for service members who are experie ncing challenges associated with transition. To help service members and families with transitions and reintegration, the Real Warriors Campaign website (www.realwarriors.net.) provides tools, tips and resources such as the ones below:. DCoE Outreach Center: The Outreach Center allows anyone to confidentially speak with health care professionals 24/7 by calling 1-866-966-1020, by using the online Live Chat feature, or by emailing [email protected]. Video Products: At the heart of the campaign are Real Warriors who are proving through example that reaching out is a sign of strength. The campaign website includes video profiles and public service announcements. Articles: The campaign website features more than 70 articles for members of the military community at all stages of the deployment cycle, including members of the National Guard and Reserve. Some topics inc lude: How Guard and Reserve Veterans Get Support from VA, Yellow Ribbon Program: Support for Guard and Reserve, and Free Support Program for Warriors in Transition for warriors in treatment. Message Boards: Campaign messages boards provide a forum for members of the military community to engage with one another directly. Join the conversation and start your own dialogue with warriors an d their families. Materials: Campaign promotional and educational materials can be ordered free-of-charge. Check out the Real Warriors Campaign Brochure for the National Guard and Reserve: 7 Tools that Reinforce Psychological Strength. E-Cards: Service members, veterans, friends and family can share messages of support and thanks by sending electronic greeting cards to their loved ones.

Hi, my name is Pooter Jr. I am 12 weeks old and a very naughty kitten! I like to take the Christmas tree
bulbs and swat them across the floor. I am the dapperest of all the Jrs! One of my owners, Erin, sent
this letter in for me; she is 11 years old.
I talk to him when I’m lonesome like; and I’m sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. For the good Lord knows I can buy more clothes, but never a friend like that. ~W. Dayton Wedgefarth

Sudden car trouble is something no driver w ants to experience, but many a driver has been driving dow n the highw ay only to feel his or her vehic le start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it could be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible.
W hen car trouble strikes w hile a vehic le is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is c er tainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But w hen a car’s tank is full and it is still show ing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protec t themselves, their passengers and their vehic les.

emergencies, you may get stuck or
need to spend time in your car

your vehicle is equipped to handle
a wide range of scenarios. Always
be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack
and fully inflated spare. If you get
stuck, you’ll be glad to have a
shovel and gravel, salt or a small
piece of carpet for traction. Jumper
cables or even a portable charger
can help address battery related
problems. Maximize your safety
with emergency flares and a first-
aid kit. In addition, stash a small
supply of non-perishable food and
water, as well as warm clothes or a
blanket, especially if you’ll be
driving lesser-traveled roads.

If you find yourself enthralled with the romance of Italy’s Tuscany region, you may be interested to make the acquaintance of the dark-berried Sangiovese grape. This most widely planted grape variety in Italy is virtually synonymous with the red wines of Italy and all the romanticism that goes along with Tuscany. The best examples of these wines have high acid content, firm tannins, and a balanced nature with flavors that speak of dark cherries. When aged in oak, Sangiovese wines tend to develop richer flavors of plum and wild raspberry. If these descriptions have your mouth watering with anticipation, you might want to head to the kitchen to whip up some pasta dishes with mushrooms or a pork dish.

Ways to stretch your money further
Living on fixed income after retirement requires that many retirees make some financial concessions. Retirement income likely won’t equal the income professionals earned while they were still working, so men and women approaching retirement may want to begin prioritizing their purchases and choosing which luxuries they can and cannot live without going forward.
Managing on a fixed income may necessitate some changes, but a little frugality and financial wherewithal can ensure seniors need not compromise too much during their golden years.
• Change your dining habits. Many people enjoy meals out on the town after getting home from work and spending time with the family. Retirees have more flexible schedules, and adjusting the time of day when they dine out can add up to considerable savings. Many brunch and lunch offerings are less expensive than dinner menus, and seniors can use this to their advantage. Meet up for lunch and spend less. If you prefer take-out, order from the lunch specials and then reheat your food at dinnertime.
• Ask about senior discounts. Various restaurants, stores and other retailers offer senior discounts. Inquire about discounts before making purchases and take advantage of any offers.
• Pool your resources. Bulk shopping clubs enable individuals to save money on the cost of many goods and services. However, for seniors living in two-person
households, it may seem counterintuitive to purchase items in bulk. Split the cost of shopping club memberships with fellow retirees. This allows you to get discounted prices without having to store excessive amounts of food.
• Shop around. Instead of shopping only at stores you’re familiar with, go where the deals are. Many people are surprised to learn that drug stores often charge less than supermarkets for personal grooming products and household supplies. Shopping online also may yield some good deals. Before making any online purchases, familiarize yourself with shipping costs, which may negate the savings.
• Sign up for rewards programs. Rewards programs may lead to a few extra promotional emails throughout the week, but the savings reaped can be considerable and well worth the nuisance of seeing your spam folder fill up each day. Many savings clubs have replaced traditional coupons, saving seniors the effort required to scan circulars looking for deals.
Living on a fixed income requires seniors to monitor their spending more carefully than they likely had to while they
were still working full time.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 24, 1988, the U.S. Supreme Court votes 8-0 to overturn the $200,000 settlement awarded to the Reverend Jerry Falwell for his emotional distress at being parodied in Hustler magazine. The court ruled that Hustler’s parody, although in poor taste, fell within the First Amendment’s protection of freedom of speech and the press.

Portable vs. Standby
Generators
Prepare your home for a
power outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home.
• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.
• A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electric ity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.
W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

Power into a New Year with Protein
Begin with a bang. With a busy day ahead, it can be tempting to rush out
the door and skip breakfast. However, countless studies have shown this
first meal of the day is extremely important. Skipping out on a balanced
breakfast can drag you down all day, both mentally and physically. Being
hungry later in the day may also make you more likely to overeat or nibble
on high-calorie snacks. For those mornings when you’re crunched for time,
grab a protein-rich ready-to-drink shake or sandwich with egg, cheese and
lean meat to give yourself sustained energy for the rest of the day.
Work in a workout. In addition to helping ward off disease and manage
your weight, regular exercise helps lift your mood by stimulating feel-good
chemicals in the brain and boosts energy by helping your body work more
efficiently. A combination of aerobic or cardio activity (walking, jogging or
running) and muscle-strengthening activity (lifting weights, resistance
training or yoga) is the winning formula, according to the most recent
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
Power with protein. Your body gets energy from three main sources:
carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein plays a major role in repairing
damaged cells, tissues and muscle. Good sources of protein include meat,
fish, eggs, dairy, nuts and vegetables, but the best sources deliver lots of
protein without a lot of fat, carbs and sugar. A protein-based snack is a
good way to recharge during the day.
Keep up on sleep. Quality sleep - and an adequate amount of it - is critical
to your overall wellbeing. While you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work
healing and repairing from the day, as well as regulating your hormonal
balance and protecting your immune system. At the same time, your brain
is also recharging to help your mental function, including learning aptitude,
problem solving and emotional health. Most adults need an average of 7-9
hours of sleep for optimal performance.
Many RN positions available inyour area. Hospitals, correctionalfacilities, and home health assess-ments. Great Pay & Benefits. Call:1-718-387-8181 #202 or email:[email protected]

WOMEN’S PROACTIVE APPROACH While research indicates that
women are more likely to have cavities than men, females tend to have better overall dental health. Perhaps this is due to the fact that women are nearly twice as likely to have visited the dentist in the past year. As a result of this proactive approach to dental and periodontal care, women have lower rates of gum disease (due to more frequent professional cleanings) and also a higher percentage of retained permanent teeth than men. It seems that women have learned from experience that good oral hygiene and regular dental care are essential since changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy and menopause can raise their risk of gum disease and associated problems (tooth loss).
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL , we can recommend a personalized oral home care program to meet your specific needs. We’ll take the time to talk with you and answer any questions you may have. Please call us at 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, where our friendly staff and relaxing environment will put you at ease.
P.S. Estrogen deficiency after menopause reduces bone mineral density, which can lead to bone loss that is associated with periodontal disease.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Common Shaving Myth Debunked DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My concern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. -- M.C.
ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood.
I am aware that the current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week -- one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to 6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? -- E.N.W.
ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exercise-induced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Do peanuts (which are not nuts, but legumes) afford the same health benefits as nuts? -- A.
ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts probably have the same benefits as tree nuts.
Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even life-threatening on occasion.

My sis and I were doing laundry @ Caledonia Laundromat. An older man came in also; he had to use a micro to talk. We conversed with him and said bye upon leaving. We went to a local restaurant and he came in and ordered his food to go. The waitress came and took our bill. He left. We asked her about our bill, she told us he paid our bill. This has never happened to us before. We wish to say Thank you and God bless. KW & DS
The Lima VFW, Post 26, wishes to thank the wonderful people who gave to our annual drive for patients and residents of the Canandaigua VA Hospital and Zion House.
On Sunday, January 31, Riga Recreation, in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, held its annual “WinterFest”, minus the snow, at the Churchville Elementary
In early December, I called a local company for service. My kitchen sink drains appeared clogged and overflowing. Service was prompt and courteous within a few hours. The sewer drain was cleaned and a venting air valve was installed. I paid the bill on site. Later, I wrote the company for a specific breakdown of this outrageous charge. To date, weeks later, no reply! Be careful who you hire. Disgruntled Widow
It’s pretty sad when someone hits your dog and doesn’t even stop to see if the dog is dead or not, or even try to find the owner! On Thursday night at about 8:30 to 9pm my daughter’s dog got out. After many hours of looking we found him dead where someone
hit him and just took off! The dog had tags on him where he was from. You would think they would try to find the owner but NO! People nowadays just don’t care! They say karma is bad, but and I hope karma finds whoever did this! Maybe someday you might lose a pet to a hit and run driver!
To the couple who ended up with my groceries: What were you thinking as you put my groceries into your fridge? (Stealing) At least you could have notified the friendly market of the mistake.
I am very concerned about the ambulance corps in my town. There is evidence that the drivers regularly use the ambulance to transport themselves to pick up lunches and other food runs. It seems that the ambulances should not be used for this purpose. The volunteers should use their own transportation to do food runs. The ambulance is there for medical purposes and not for personal use. I don’t see the fire department loading 6 foot Hoagies onto their official vehicles and neither should the ambulance.
School. The community was treated to the Lions’ “World Famous” Chicken BBQ along with a kid’s carnival, caricature drawings, chair massages, juggling, and magic tricks with The Magic Guy! Thanks go out to all who helped one way or another. The turnout by the Riga community is to be complimented as the Lions sold out all their BBQs and there was a constant flow of the crowd throughout the day. All involved look forward to WinterFest 2017 and hopefully snow for outdoor activities! David Thomas Recreation Supervisor
On Tuesday, February 2nd, I was shopping at the Wal-Mart in Canandaigua. While checking out I realized that I had overspent. I’m so thankful for the shopper behind me. She contributed the extra money to cover the difference so I could make my complete purchase. Thank you so much! Grateful Shopper
I want to thank the two guys who came out of The Nines on a cold snowy night to help tie up my front bumper after I hit a deer on 20A. It was so nice of them to leave the warmth of the restaurant and help get me on my way. THANK YOU!!!

A Science Fiction Tale of Struggle and Redemption
Zarr book cover
Local author R. E. Smart started writing his first book at the age of 10, after being inspired by the tales his mother would tell of her long lost home planet, Zarr. He didn’t get very far with an old manual typewriter and a demanding school schedule. Over the years he would get out his manuscript and add to it, but again life got busy as he graduated from GCC, then St. John Fisher College and finally the University of Rochester, going on to join the full-time work force. Working on his book in his spare time here and there, he reached the point where he has been able to complete the tale and now wants to share it with others.
R. E. Smart is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working in a community mental health center in Western New York. He is an avid science fiction fan who majored in psychology/minored in anthropology in college. Smart wanted to write a story that combined his love of science fiction with his belief in the potential of people to improve their lives, a story that would not only entertain but encourage people as well. Working with a wide range of people from all walks of life who face all sorts of challenges, he wanted to tell a tale of redemption
and illuminate the struggle everyone faces to discover their true selves.
ZARR: the Legacy of the Vorx is the story of one man trying to find his place and purpose in the Universe. Kidnapped as a child, raised by the man who murdered his parents and destroyed his world, the truth is kept from him until a chance encounter with a stranger that sets him on a path of discovery and adventure. He struggles with the evils he has done as he strives to be the man others expect him to be, reluctantly reclaiming his rightful place and leading his people to victory.
ZARR: the Legacy of the Vorx is available at smashwords.com

Enjoy dining out w ith kids
Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.
Parents also can acc limate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

ORANGE-GINGER
BABY BACK RIBS
INGREDIENTS:
5 pounds baby back ribs
SAUCE:
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons grainy mustard
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
4 c loves garlic , minced
1 tablespoon ginger
Grated zest of an orange
Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the grill to medium and turn dow n to low. Prepare ribs for grilling by removing the membrane from the underside of the ribs. Prepare several foil envelopes and place 2 strips of r ibs into each envelope, w ith 1/4 cup of w ater and seal tightly. Cook for 2 to 21/2 hours on low (300* F) w ith the lid c losed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the c ooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or tw o burners off and cooking indirectly.
To prepare the sauce: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and set aside until the ribs are ready to remove from the foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10 to 15 minutes before using.
Carefully remove the ribs from the foil and place on grids. Baste generously w ith sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning several times, and basting w ith sauce after each turn.
Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

Leaving An Estate To Charity
One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.
When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

Make Your Business Dinner A Success: Pay In Advance
Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it ’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day.
