Dublin Marathon Charity Partnership
Proposal 2016
The Dublin Marathon & Barretstown
Barretstown has recruited and supported hundreds of participants who have taken part in
sporting events for the charity
The Dublin Marathon is a very important event in Barretstown’s community fundraising portfolio.
Every year Barretstown runs a participant recruitment campaign specifically around the Dublin Marathon and Race Series and recruits scores of participants.
A Barretstown Dublin Marathon participant story
Kevin Shortall’s daughter Louise was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was 6 years old.
Following months of lengthy and complicated treatment Louise slowly started to recover and the Shortalls got the chance to attend family camp in Barretstown.
At Barretstown Louise and the whole family had serious fun! They laughed, danced, ate rings around them and grew together as a family.
Kevin was wanted to fundraise for Barretstown following his family’s experience at camp.
The Dublin marathon had always been on his radar.
Kevin has taken part in the Dublin Marathon twice for Barretstown and has recruited others to do so too.
To date Kevin has raised €10,000.
“There is nothing like the buzz of running further, faster and feeling fine afterwards, and there’s nothing like the buzz of crossing the marathon finish line.”
(Kevin Shortall)
About BarretstownBarretstown offers free, specially designed camps and programmes of Therapeutic Recreation for children and their families living with a serious illness – supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care.
Barretstown looks after the physical and emotional well-being of a child with a serious illness, by creating a carefree and safe, medically supported environment where they can make new friends, share experiences - and continue their treatment if they need to.
Our camps and programmes have a profound effect and lasting impact on our campers and their families. After participating, children go home with increased confidence, self-esteem and more importantly the reassurance that happiness is not just for healthy children.
We believe that every child with
serious illness should enjoy their childhood
again.
Our Vision
Barretstown’s approach

One of our founding principles is that
campers and their families come here because of a need -
rather than an ability to pay.
How Barretstown is funded• All children and families come to Barretstown free of charge. • Every year: over €4.5 million cost to run the programmes at Barretstown
– 3% provided by the Health Service Executive

• Funds raised from Dublin Marathon participant fundraising will come directly to Barretstown and would have an immediate impact on the lives of the children and families who take part in our programmes.
