Unit 1: Foundry Industry, Patterns and Molds (7 Hours) Introduction of Casting as a manufacturing process, Classification of casting processes,
applications and advantages and limitations of casting process, Classification of foundries
based on different criteria, Major activities in foundry Foundry process flowchart and
different layouts of foundry. Introduction to different ferrous and non-ferrous cast alloys and their
applications, Patterns: Pattern materials, allowances, types of pattern, pattern design, Pattern
color codes. Types of molding sand, properties of molding sands sand mold, molding sand
materials, composition of molding sand Green and dry sand molding process. hand molding
and machine molding, ramming methods, CO2 molding process.
Unit 2: Core making and melting practice (6 Hours) Cores- Core sands, core sand composition, Functions of cores, types of cores and core boxes.
Core making procedure, core prints, chaplets, Shell molding and core making, forces on
cores and molds.
Melting of Metals, Types of melting furnaces, Cupola and induction melting furnaces
construction and working, Charge calculation for cast Iron. Composition, physical properties
and applications of ferrous and non-ferrous castings: Grey cast iron, S.G. iron, White cast
iron, malleable cast iron, Aluminum copper and magnesium based alloys. Importance and
methods of inoculation in cast irons, Degassing and modification treatments in aluminum,
copper and magnesium alloy castings. Ladles – Types, Use, Lining materials.
Unit 3: Methoding of casting and special casting techniques (7 Hours)
Gating and Risering: Components of gating system, functions and importance, design
parameters of gating. Gating ratio, pressurized and un-pressurized gating systems. Risers,
functions and modulus. Directional solidification, use importance of chills and ceramic
bricks. Yield of castings. Numerical treatment to be given to design of and gating system and
riser design. Fettling and cleaning of castings, Defects, inspection and testing of castings.
Special casting Processes: Gravity die casting, high Pressure die casting and low pressure die
Casting, centrifugal casting, continuous casting, investment casting, their typical
applications, merits and limitations.
Pollution and safety in foundry: Possible hazards in foundries, Safety measures, Safety
devices Types and sources of pollution in foundries, Measures for pollution control.
Unit 4: Gas welding/cutting, soldering and brazing (7 Hours)
Introduction, classification of Welding processes. Comparison with other joining
processes, advantages, disadvantages, practical applications. Welding Symbols. Basic &
supplementary weld symbols, types of weld Joints, Selection of Weld Joint, edge
preparation Principle of operation, types of flames, Gas welding Techniques, filler material
and fluxes, Gas welding equipments, advantages and applications, Gas cutting: merits,
limitations and applications of above processes. Brazing, braze welding and soldering

Plastic deformation - Mechanisms. Deformation of Single crystal and Polycrystalline
materials. Numerical based on it. Imperfections in crystals. Dislocations, work hardening.
Cold and Hot working of metals. Future Trends in Material
Unit 2: Material Testing (7 Hours) Destructive Testing – Tension test-Engineering and True Stress - True strain curves,
conversion Relationships, Evaluation of properties. Numericals based on Tension Test.
Engineering stress - Strain curves of different materials. Compression Test, Cupping Test
on Sheet metal, Hardness Tests – Brinell, Poldi, Vickers, Rockwell Shore scleroscope,
Durometer, Moh's test, Micro hardness test and hardness conversions. Impact tests, Fatigue
and Creep tests.
Non-destructive tests - Visual Inspection, Magna flux test Dye penetrant test, Sonic and

Unit 2: Kinematic Analysis of Mechanisms: (Velocity and
Acceleration Analysis)

Introduction, Motion of a link, velocity of a point on a link by relative velocity method, velocity in
a slider crank mechanism, introduction, acceleration diagram for a link, acceleration of a point on a link by relative acceleration method, Klein’s construction.
Unit 3: Governors (7 Hours) Introduction, Function, types of governor, centrifugal governor, terms used in governor, types of
centrifugal governors - Watt, Porter, Proell & Hartnell and Pickering governor, sensitivities of

Unit 4: Cams and Followers (8 Hours)
Introduction, applications, types of cams and followers, terms used in radial cams, analysis of motion of follower, displacement, velocity, and acceleration diagrams for various types of
follower motions: uniform velocity, SHM, uniform acceleration and retardation, cycloidal motion,
construction of cam profile for roller, knife edge ,flat faced followers and oscillating follower .
Unit 5: Spur Gear (7 Hours)
Advantages and disadvantages of gear drive, classification of toothed wheel, terms used in gears, involute and cycloidal profile, condition for constant velocity ratio-law of gearing, length of path
of contact, length of arc of contact, interference in involute gears, minimum number of teeth on
the pinion in order to avoid interference, minimum number of teeth on the wheel in order to avoid
interference.
Unit 6: Gear Trains (5 Hours) Types of gear trains- simple gear trains, compound gear trains, reverted gear trains, epicyclic gear
trains. Introduction to types of belt drives.

Tolerancing an individual dimensions of details drawing.
Unit 4: Details and Assembly Drawing (07 Hours) To prepare detail drawings from given assembly drawing. To prepare assembly drawing
from given drawing of details. The number of parts is limited to ten to twelve. Preparation
of detail and assembly drawing from the following details such as: -Machine tool parts :
Tool post, Tailstock, Machine vice, Chucks etc. -Engine parts: Stuffing box, Crosshead
assembly, Piston and connecting rod, etc. -Miscellaneous parts: Valve assembly, Screw
jack, Jigs and fixtures, Pipe vice etc. Assembly selected should include different types of

Unit 1: Displacement Measurement and object detection sensor (8 Hours)
Transducer definition, classification, and performance characteristics. Resistive: Potentiometer and its types, loading effect, sensitivity, Piezo-resistive, equivalent circuits, charge and voltage sensitivity. Inductive: LVDT, RVDT, variable, reluctance, self-
inductance and mutual inductance. Capacitive: single plate, differential capacitance cell and
measurement circuits. Digital transducers: encoders – types of translational and rotary encoders.
Proximity sensors: inductive, capacitive, optical, ultrasonic, hall-effect and magnetic. Flapper nozzle: sensitivity, characteristics, its applications in air gauging,
Unit 2: Speed Measurement and Acceleration measurement (6 Hours)
stroboscopes, toothed rotor, eddy current, capacitive tachometer, electromagnetic transducers
(moving coil, moving magnet), AC and DC tachometers: Hall effect proximity pickup, capacitive,
photoelectric, photo-reflective, pulse counting method, Doppler Laser and radar type. Acceleration measurement: seismic, potentiometer, angular accelerometer, variable reluctance, eddy current
proximity sensor.
Unit 3: Strain, Force, and Torque Measurement (8 Hours)
Strain measurement: principle, strain gauge, types, gauge factor, gauge wire properties, Force
measurement: basic methods of force measurement, strain gauges, piezoelectric. LVDT and vibrating wire type Torque measurement: In-line rotating and stationery, torsion bar. inductive,
photoelectric, proximity sensor and strain gauge.Weight measurement: load cells -
electromagnetic, vibrating string, magneto-restrictive, cantilever beam. comparison of pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic Load cell
Unit 5: Flow and Level Measurement (8Hours)
Flow Measurement: Units, Newtonian and non-newtonian fluids, Reynolds’s number, laminar
and turbulent flows, velocity profile, Bernoulli’s equation Head type flow meters: Orifice (eccentric, segmental, concentric), different pressure taps, venture-meter, pitot tube
electromagnetic, vortex shedding, Variable area type: Rotameter
Level Measurement :Direct (Gauges): Hook type, sight glass: tubular, transparent and
reflex, float and tape. Indirect: Hydrostatic pressure, bubbler. Electrical : Float, displacer
(torque tube unit), ultrasonic)
Unit 4: Temperature Measurement and Pressure measurement (8 Hours)
Temperature Measurement :Temperature scales, units and relations, classification of
temperature sensors. Mechanical: bimetallic thermometer, Electrical: Resistance temperature
detectors, its types and comparison, circuits for lead wire compensation, Thermocouple: laws
of thermoelectricity, terminologies, types (B, E, J, K, R, S, T), characteristics, study of
thermocouple tables, lead wire compensation, cold junction. Pressure measurement Pressure scales, units and relations, manometers – U tube, well type,
inclined tube. Elastic – bourdon, diaphragm, bellows and their types. Calibrating Instruments – Dead Weight Tester Vacuum Measurement: Hot cathode ionization gauge, cold cathode ionization
(Penning) gauge
