International Tikkun Olam Project Honorees
Marty and Arna Caplan
Marty and Arna, members of B’nai Havurah for more than 30 years, have been doing important work in Nairobi, Kenya with the organization Shining Hope for Communities. They have brought a whole new math and literacy program to a school for girls in the slums of Nairobi and have been to the school three times to train the teachers. Individually, Marty has been very active with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and Arna has been very involved in work with Knitting for Peace, an organization that provides hand-crafted items of comfort to those in need in the Denver community and around the world.
Margery Goldman
As a founding member of Havurah Kehillah, Margery has been a member of B’nai Havurah for about 30 years. Margery and her late husband, Marvin Naiman, funded a wide range of programs from contemplative education (Naropa University, where Margery has served on the board), to women’s health to microfinance. Following a trip to Israel and the West Bank with Rabbis for Human Rights in 2008, Margery’s focus shifted to the issues of Israel and Palestine. Through her membership in the Women Donors Network, an organization of over 200 progressive philanthropists and
5
activists, Margery’s activism on these issues deepened. She became an early leader of the women’s forum of J Street and she supports a range of Jewish organizations in the US, Israel and the Palestinian Territories that are seeking to find a just and equitable resolution to this seemingly intractable conflict.
Alice Turak
Alice fell in love with the West African nation of Senegal on her first visit in 1971. On two subsequent visits she brought supplies to schools in rural areas with African Heritage Celebration, and she assisted individuals who had been injured by buried land mines. A nonprofit organization, African Heritage Celebration was founded after a Senegalese man, Oumar Dia, was murdered in Denver in a hate crime. Since then, many Coloradans have visited his village and other rural villages to bring needed supplies. Alice is also involved with Friends of Guéoul, whose mission is to keep girls in school by offering scholarships to their families. So far 104 disadvantaged girls have been able to remain in school. Ultimately, the goal is to promote empowerment and the success of each girl into adulthood. Alice also volunteers at Place Bridge Academy, where she has discovered a facility for teaching math concepts. This last fact would greatly surprise her mother.

Fund-a-Kid
At last year’s fundraising event, Find Yourself a Teacher, honoring educators at B’nai Havurah, we introduced “Fund-a-Need.” At the event, more than 50 guests made donations from $25 up to $1,000 that benefited our Religious School. In total $2,500 was raised for computer tablets and $2,500 was raised for our tuition assistance scholarship program. We are pleased to report that seven families requested help with tuition and were granted assistance through the program. This year, we bring this successful program back and have dubbed it “Fund-a-Kid.” Our goal is to raise $2,500 again for tuition assistance. During the course of events this evening, we will again ask you to raise your bid cards in support of our tuition assistance program with a donation from $25 on up! Thank you in advance for your support!

Strength. Expertise. Skill. Our clients tell us that’s what they look for in a real estate expert. They want a reliable partner that’s skilled at reducing risk and removing uncertainty. They want someone who’s
an expert on the real estate market and at maximizing their leverage. And they want someone who’s a tough negotiator on their behalf
(that’s where the fencing analogy comes in).

#4. A WEEK IN MEXICO FOR 2-4 PEOPLE

a shoreline sprinkled with beckoning islands, a lovely seaside promenade, miles of golden beaches and blue lagoons, it really lives up to its moniker “Pearl of the Pacific.” Sometimes when you’re planning your holidays you have to make a decision: sun and sand, or culture and history? Mazatlan has the distinction of offering the best of both worlds in the newer Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), where you’ll find most of the major hotels, shops, bars and restaurants scattered along the idyllic beaches; meanwhile, in Old Mazatlan or the Centro Historico (Historic Center), life carries on as it did before tourists arrived in the markets, cafes, churches and shady plazas throughout the traditional neighborhoods. Cabo San Lucas lies on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Cabo has a curious charm. The beaches are protected by beautiful Land’s End, and the activities are endless: jet-skiing, banana boating, parasailing, snorkeling, kitesurfing, diving and horseback riding can all be done just by walking down to the beach. If you rent a car and get outside the city limits, you’ll be surrounded by majestic cardón cacti, caracara birds and mystical arroyos. You must select your week’s stay in 2016 or 2017. Repairing the World Class Projects: Decorative Tzedakah Boxes
This school year, our Religious School boasts more than 90 youth in grades pre-kindergarten through 10th grade. We’re happy to see that most of our teens after their B’nai Mitzvah choose to continue on with their religious education. Additionally, we are pleased to welcome 13 students from Rodef Shalom in a unique collaboration between Rodef Shalom and B’nai Havurah.
Our students know that tzedakah is a fundamental part of Jewish life. The Hebrew word tzedakah comes from the root tzedek, meaning justice. Giving money and resources is understood to be an act of justice that goes beyond just charity. The term reminds us all to “do right” and help others — financially, materially, spiritually and in any way possible. The concept of tzedakah is incor-porated into our religious school curriculum for students of all ages.
Students in grades pre-kindergarten through 5th grade were asked to create a tzedakah box as a class project. Each box is available for bid this evening. Please bid generously and take home a beautiful tzedakah box to be enjoyed by your friends and family.
Thank you to our students and teachers for your creative tzedakah boxes! The bidding for each box begins at $18 with no bidding cap.
