Welcome to Artful Evening! We hope you have a wonderful evening and enjoy mingling with others who share a commitment to the arts in our community. We know you will be inspired by the amazing talents of our donating artists and we hope it will motivate you to raise your paddle tonight.

BAM is unique not only for its focus on art, craft, and design, but also for evolving out of a community-driven arts and craft fair. The first ARTSfair was held in 1947 and eventually led to the founding of the Museum in 1975. BAM will celebrate ARTSfair’s 70th anniversary the last week of July, the 29th–31st. Come celebrate the role this remarkable event plays in our community and be sure to stop by the museum and hear the enthusiasm of KIDSfair, where the Museum engages children with various art activities over three days.

Today BAM features world-class exhibitions, unparalleled educational programming all of which enables BAM to bring the best of art, craft, and design to our local residents of the Pacific Northwest as well as visitors from around the world.

Our ability to fulfill our mission depends on each of you. Each dollar you spend or donate tonight sends a message that you value art in the heart of your community.

You are 100% in for BAM. So raise your glass, raise your paddle, and let the party begin!

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the lively community we craft together.

HonoreesPAT AND SAM SMITHThe mission of Bellevue Arts Museum is a natural extension of Pat and Sam Smith’s ongoing interest in craft, particularly the work of Northwest artists. To Pat and Sam, BAM is a gem often unrecognized by many in the area. The mixture of art, craft, and design o¥ers a vibrant and creative venue for exhibitions and art related activities that can touch people of all ages and cultures.

Pat first joined BAM’s Board in 2007, and after serving two terms, remains involved with BAM on the Advisory Council. Sam joined the Board in 2009 and continues into his third term as a Trustee. In addition to their trustee and advisory responsibilities, the Smiths generously sponsor the beloved People’s Choice Award for each edition of BAM’s Biennial juried exhibition. The award is presented to the artist selected by museum visitors who vote for their favorite piece.

Outside of BAM, Pat and Sam are community leaders for many local organizations. Sam has served on the Boards at Pilchuck Glass School and Pratt Fine Arts Center, while Pat has served

at The Museum of Northwest Art and the Washington State Arts Commission. They are both long-time supporters of the Museum of Art at Washington State University, where Sam served as the university’s President from 1985–2000.

Pat and Sam’s dedication is immensely appreciated and we are thankful for their time, talents, and insights. Please join us in thanking the Smiths for their commitment to the arts and helping to make Bellevue Arts Museum the Pacific Northwest’s premier venue for experiencing art, craft, and design.

Dating back to the early 1950s, ‘Patron Parties’ were the summer’s social highlight. The ARTSfair Patron Parties became Artful Evening!

Many ARTSfair artists donate to Artful Evening to support BAM. Raise a glass tonight to all donating artists and visit many more at BAM ARTSfair, July 29–31, 2016.

“Creating an artwork is a process evolving from an idea or insight to then be manifested into a resulting artwork. Drawing has always played a critical role in my development of that process. Throughout my career I have utilized drawing in approaching printmaking either directly with lithographs, etchings, aquatints or with my recent body of work in monoprints. Line quality and silhouette in the graphic work relates directly with my dialogue with three-dimensional forms.”

AUCTION RULES

Upon entry, each guest will be given a bid number. To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number on the silent auction bid form. Bid cards will be at your table. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card high with the number toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or bid spotter can accept your bid. By bidding in the live or silent auctions each bidder agrees to the following auction rules:

• A bid acknowledged by the live auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. As well, in the silent auction, designation of the bid you have written by the silent auction o®cial as the top bid is a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item.

• Top bidders may pay for their items at the auction cashiering stations in the Hyatt Regency Bellevue lobby, which opens for regular service at the conclusion of the live auction. We encourage you to pay for your purchases only once, at the end of the live auction. Payment in full, however, is mandatory at the auction.

• All auction art and experience purchases are subject to a 10% Buyer’s Premium. Auction donations for Raise the Paddle and Golden Tickets are not subject to the Buyer’s Premium. The Buyer’s Premium supports the Bellevue Arts Museum.

• Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. The top bid amount for an auction item will not be split among bidders who may have agreed to pay a portion of the top bid amount unless all of the payments for the auction are presented to the cashier at the time of payment.

• Bidders who elect at registration to be served under the ExpressPay™ system do not have to stand in line to pay for their purchases. Instead, ExpressPay™ guests will have paid receipts for their auction purchases delivered to them during the course of the auction, and final receipts mailed after the auction.

• All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted.

• The purchaser assumes the responsibility to locate and remove purchases from Hyatt Regency Bellevue premises this evening.

• Tangible items must be removed from the premises this evening. BAM volunteers will wrap your purchases to take home at no charge to you. Unclaimed items will be kept by Bellevue Arts Museum for a maximum of 60 days. Any items not spoken for can be used at the museum’s discretion.

• The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid which is a minimal fractional advance over the prior bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to add or withdraw, without notice, items to or from the auction.

• We will gladly accept your payment by currency, your check, Visa or MasterCard. Please make your check payable to Bellevue Arts Museum. The Internal Revenue Service has granted Bellevue Arts Museum charitable organization status. We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization and your payments are tax deductible as a charitable contribution, to the extent provided by law. Generally you may deduct as a charitable contribution the amount you pay above fair market value of the item. Please see your tax professional for deductibility to you.

• Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be claimed and used within one year of the auction date, and reservations for trips and parties must be mutually arranged with the donor.

• Bellevue Arts Museum has attempted to describe all catalogue items correctly, but all items are o¥ered as is, where is. Bellevue Arts Museum neither warrants nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness of the descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalogue or made orally at the auction or elsewhere shall be deemed as such a warranty for tax purposes or fair market value.

• In your auction catalogue, “Value” is an estimate of the retail value. We depend on the donor to give us a reasonable estimate of the item’s retail value. Items have not been appraised unless otherwise noted.

• Each person issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising there from Bellevue Arts Museum, its elected and appointed o®cials, members and employees, the auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors and/or volunteers connected with the auction.

EMANCIPATING THE PASTKARA WALKER’S TALES OF SLAVERY AND POWER

INSPIRING BEAUTY50 YEARS OF EBONY FASHION FAIR

BALANCE AND TENSIONTHE FURNITURE OF SETH ROLLAND

THROUGH AUGUST 14

The first ever exhibition on the Ebony Fashion Fair, Inspiring Beauty explores the 50-year history of the fashion spectacle that redefined concepts of beauty, style, and empowerment for African Americans. The exhibition includes garments, accessories, photographs, video, and ephemera that tell the story of how the Fair’s director, Eunice W. Johnson, was able to revolutionize the relationship between African Americans and the fashion establishment.

Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair was developed by the Chicago History Museum in cooperation with Johnson Publishing Company, LLC, presented by the Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum, and toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. The local presentation of this exhibition is curated by Stefano Catalani and made possible by Nordstrom.

THROUGH AUGUST 14

Seth Rolland is a craftsman in the purest sense—someone who thinks and communicates with his hands. A perceptive observer of shape and structure, Rolland finds inspiration for his furniture in the architecture of the natural world: geological formations slowly carved by the flow of water, the numerous and swarming legs on an insect, the growth pattern of tree roots, and the heft of cobbles on the beach, all converging to inform his work.

Balance and Tension: The Furniture of Seth Rolland is organized by Bellevue Arts Museum and curated by Stefano Catalani.

THROUGH NOVEMBER 27

Emancipating the Past showcases the work of one of the most high-profile and controversial artists working in America today, Kara Walker. Walker’s powerful, large-scale murals and cut-paper silhouette installations tackle issues of race, slavery, sexuality, identity, and power—offering dissected representations of racial and gender stereotypes from America’s not-so-distant past.

Emancipating the Past: Kara Walker’s Tales of Slavery and Power, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation is organized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon and curated by Jessi DiTillio. The local presentation of this exhibition is curated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken.

THROUGH JANUARY 15, 2017 Strategies for Survival presents an emotionally charged selection of samplers by San Francisco-based artist Bren Ahearn. His use of the sampler is wittily subversive. By reclaiming this traditionally feminine craft, Ahearn questions expectations about manhood and its assumed qualities of courage, vigor, and determination. Ahearn’s work expresses reliance on one’s own feelings as a guide to truth, as place to find strength against conforming expectations, and as strategy for survival.

Bren Ahearn: Strategies for Survival is organized by Bellevue Arts Museum and curated by Stefano Catalani.
