2016-17 HIGHLIGHTSThe 2016-17 season saw the Ball State track & field team earn five total medals at the Mid-American Conference Championships (combined indoor and outdoor), including three golds.
The effort marks the most individual event champions Ball State has had at the MAC Championships in one year since 2009. In addition, the five top three finishes tie with the 2010 squad as the most since the 2009 team captured 12.
Ball State was one of only five programs to have an event champion at both the 2017 MAC indoor and outdoor championships. In addition, the Cardinals’ three gold medals tied as the fourth-most in the league for the 2017 campaign.
With a career-fast time of 8.43 in the 60m hurdles, sophomore Jazmin Smith became Ball State’s first individual champion at the league’s premier indoor meet since the 2009 season. She is the fourth different Ball State student-athlete to win the event, giving the program its fifth 60m hurdles title.
However, Smith was not alone on the podium in the race, as freshman Jasmine Harris earned the bronze medal by placing third with a career-fast time of her own at 8.51.
The Cardinals also saw a school record fall late in the MAC Indoor Championships, as sophomore Regan Lewis placed second in the high jump by successfully clearing the bar at 1.81m on her second attempt. The previous indoor program record was 1.77m held by both Ashley Gillies (2002) and Susan Setlack (2000).
Sophomore Peyton Stewart became Ball State’s first MAC individual outdoor champion since 2012 when she crossed the finish line of the 100m dash in a career-fast time of 11.55. Stewart’s winning time, which gave Ball State its 10th all-time title in the 100m dash at the MAC Outdoor Championships, is the fourth-best individual effort in program history and earned her a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Lewis followed with the Cardinals’ second MAC individual outdoor championship, clearing a career-best height of 1.82m in the high jump. She became just the fourth MAC high jump champion in program history, and the first since Rebecca Lomax in 2011. In addition, her effort of 1.82m was the second-best outdoor mark in program history, trailing only Bonita Harrington’s 1.84m set in 1984, and earned her a top seven seed in the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

HEAD COACH
BRIANETELMANCAREER COACHING HIGHLIGHTS AT BALL STATE UNIVERSITY Brian Etelman, a two-time All-American sprinter at the University of Georgia, enters his third season as the head coach of the Ball State track & field and cross country programs in 2017-18.
In his first two seasons, Etelman has helped lead a resurgence of the Ball State track & field program, including sending a pair of athletes to the regional round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships for the first time since the 2009 season.
Peyton Stewart become the first Ball State sprinter to qualify for NCAA competition in the 100m dash since Amber Williams in 2009. She entered the race as the 42nd seed after recording a career-fast time of 11.55 to win the event at the 2017 MAC Outdoor Championships.
Regan Lewis became the second Ball State student-athlete to compete in the high jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, joining three-time qualifier Rebecca Lomax (2011, 2012 and 2015). Lewis entered as the seventh seed after successfully clearing the bar at a career-best height of 1.82m to win the MAC Outdoor Championship.
Aside from the NCAA Regional qualifiers, the 2016-17 campaign saw the program earn five total medals at the Mid-American Conference Championships (combined indoor and outdoor), including three golds.
Ball State’s first event champion was Jazmin Smith who won the 60m hurdles at the 2017 MAC Indoor Championships with a career-fast time of 8.43. She became Ball State’s first individual champion at the league’s premier indoor meet since the 2009 season.
The Cardinals also saw a school record fall late in the MAC Indoor Championships, as Lewis placed second in the high jump by successfully clearing the bar at 1.81m on her second attempt. The previous indoor program record was 1.77m held by both Ashley Gillies (2002) and Susan Setlack (2000).
Stewart became Ball State’s first MAC individual outdoor champion since 2012 when she crossed the finish line of the 100m dash in a career-fast time of 11.55. Lewis followed with the Cardinals’ second MAC individual outdoor championship, clearing a career-best height of 1.82m in the high jump.
In his first season with the Cardinals, Etelman helped his student-athletes secure eight top eight individual finishes at the MAC Championships, as well as a pair of top eight relay finishes.

Ball State began as a private normal school in 1899. Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the Ball brothers, a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918.
The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.
Ball State has seven academic colleges and a graduate school with over 150 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management.
