264th Baldwin County Fair 2014 BALDWINCOFAIR.COM
The 63rd Baldwin County Fair was awarded three pres-tigious honors last February during the Annual Association of Alabama Fairs Conference.
For the first time in our fair history, the designations of “Superior” Fair, “Champion” Fair and “Grand Champion” Fair were presented to this fair based on ratings by the state association.
The outstanding participation of folks from Stockton, Ala. in the northern part of the county, continuing all the way throughout the hub area on to eastern shore and the Gulf Shores coastline, made these awards possible. The variety of displays and exhibits met and exceeded all judg-ing categories in the competition categories. The facilities of the Baldwin County Coliseum / Shelter, Arena and sur-rounding fairgrounds provide excellent, accommodations for all our fair projects.
This year’s Fair schedule includes a new midway bringing bright lights and exciting rides for the brave thrill seekers. Arnold Amusements, Inc. midway will make their debut in Baldwin County after the retirement of Myers Midways. The Tom Arnold family is no newcomer to the entertainment industry, having been in business serving the northern states for many years.
They will continue to offer the ride specials, the $10.00 “Pay One Price” admission fee on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, $5.00 Off Armband Coupon on Thursday, Student Night, and $20.00 Armband Midnight Maddness at 10:00 p.m. on Friday Night. We look forward to them becoming part of our annual celebration of entertainment fun.
The Fair Board expresses sympathy in the loss of Alex
A. (Tumpsie) Trione, a longtime Fair board member who passed away in February. “Tumpsie”, as he was known in the commu-nity, was involved with many local civic orga-nizations. He catered many events including the The Baldwin Coun-ty Cattlemen’s Annual Dinner featuring his famous “Red Rice”. The highlight of the night was auctioneer, “Tumpsie” delighting the audience for higher bids for the Cattlewom-en’s Cake Auction.
I want to thank the members of the Fair Board for their continued dedication to improving this year’s fair with current technology using the World Wide Web, provid-ing clean and safe facilities and the opportunity for family centered activities.
The last week in September is dedicated to Fair Week, showing the past seasons harvest, welcoming fall weather, watching the rodeo and eating fair food. Funnel cakes are my favorite!
See you at the Fair,
Sonny Hankins, manager of the Baldwin County Fair
64th Baldwin FairFair Manager’s Message
3 64th Baldwin County Fair 2014BALDWINCOFAIR.COM
Welcome to the Fair!
In every one of Alabama’s 67 counties, you can see a growing and vibrant farming economy. It’s evident not just in the fields, pastures and forests of our great state, but also in our rural com-munities, the towns where busi-nesses are doing well thanks to Alabama farmers.
Every year at this time, hun-dreds of thousands of Alabam-ians converge on their local county fairs for entertainment, good food, fellowship and to join in on the farm expositions of livestock and farm produc-tion. This is a time when Alabama’s future leaders dem-onstrate the results of their hard work on the farm.
As your Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries, few things energize me as much as going to our Alabama county fairs and being with our families who each year support these worthwhile community endeavors. You and your family, as a result of attending and supporting your county fair, are a part of an incredible Alabama resource.
Alabama farmers, foresters and agribusinesses generate over $70 billion a year, amounting to 40 percent of our state’s economy. This significant contribution to our state is on display each year at our county fairs.
We at the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Indus-tries send our best wishes to all who each year work hard to make our county fairs a success. Thank you for your continued support for Alabama farmers and agriculture!
Sincerely,
John McMillan

A native of Bangor, Maine, Mark H. Robinson at-tended school in Portland, Maine and applied and was appointed to the Maine Maritime Academy. He graduated in 1966 and received a
commission for the United States Navy or in the Unit-ed States Merchant Marines. He chose the Merchant Marines and was hired as a cadet for Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. During his thirty year employ-ment with this company, he sailed to and from Viet-nam.
At the end of a voyage lasting 90 days or longer, a 90 day vacation was mandatory. On each of those vaca-tions, Mark returned to a school for Merchant Marines in “Mitage”, in Lithecum Heights, Maryland. Over the years Mark received his Captains’s license, where he continued sailing for thirty years.
He sailed all over the world being employed with the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. There were many calm voyages and others that were very fright-ening with bad weather, rough water coming over the boat, crew problems and pirates. The ship had a crew

of thirty-six and the cap-tain was responsible. He has many sea stories and often shares them these days. In 1997, after sail-ing six voyages all around the world it was time for retirement.
Mark met Joan Urban, her parents Vivian and Fred, and neighbors the F.B. Ellisons. He said he fell in love with Baldwin County’s Rosinton Com-munity. We now know he was mostly in love with Joan.
He built and designed a home on a waterfront lot in Fort Morgan, Alabama, but after six hurricanes, he decided to live in the Gulf Shores and Rosinton community.
Two other places of employment have been the Fort Morgan Marina and Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Mark always had a camera and a dark room when he was a young boy in Bangor, Maine. Hav-ing a camera during thirty years of sailing compiled an extensive collection.
Now, he has four pro-fessional heavy cameras and photography is still something he loves, espe-cially beach photography and beach weddings.
Mark does a lot of vol-unteer work with the Gulf Shores Police Depart-ment, City of Gulf Shores, the local newspapers, the Shrimp Festival, Rosinton Community and of course the Baldwin County Fair.
Joan, Mark’s wife, not-ed that Mark is a very generous, loving and car-ing person for his county, his community and his friends.
The Baldwin County Fair is very fortunate to be one his friends. Thank you “Captain” for all our Fair memories you photo-graph for us. n
Mark approaches Cape town, South Africa while employed with Lykes Brothers Steamship Company, part of the united States Merchant Marines.

dewey northcuttHeifer Show Judge
The Baldwin County Fair will hold a Heifer Show at 5 p.m. on Thursday with a variety of heifer breeds going before experienced show cattle raiser, Dewey Northcutt.
Raised in Rosinton, Northcutt attended Auburn Univer-sity, earning a degree in Agriculture and Vocational Educa-tion. He now holds an annual calf sale through San Oaks Farm at the Auburn campus each March; last year, calves went out to 10 different states, he said.
He has served as livestock judge in Houston, Fort Worth, Louisville and Montgomery; and Northcutt will judge the Baldwin County Fair Heifer Show for the first time this year.
He said he has raised show cattle for more than 30 years, beginning with the 4H and FFA when his children were young.
He said they traveled to the Midwest to buy animals, then they raised them and have had many winners.
In judging a show, he explained, there are numerous things that make a winner, such as conformation, width, show appearance and structure.
“Most important in the case of heifers is the breading abil-ity and reproduction ability of that heifer,” he explained.
While he raises Angus, Maine Anjou and Simmental cat-tle, he judges shows with a wide variety of breeds.
“I’m semi-retired and raising show cattle mainly because I love to do it,” he said. n

Watusi steers are a South african breed of cattle most-ly kept as a symbol of wealth. In South alabama, they are merely considered a form of pasture art.
after the Baldwin County fair this year, Valentino will be on loan to alligator alley for fans to view.

Baldwin County fair volunteer of the year
the Baldwin County Fair Volunteer of the Year of 2014 is Clareen Wells,
who is no stranger to the Baldwin County Fair folks. She’s been volunteering with Creative Arts activities since the ‘80s.
For many years, she sewed cross stitch and made quilts with a local group.
This dedicated volunteer gives of her time each year to attend the fair and assist with the registration, identi-fying and displaying all the numerous items for exhibit in the coliseum.
Her interest in fair activi-ties began long ago, being that that she was raised on a Holstein cow and pig farm in Minnesota.
She married Harold Wells, a Navy man who was from the same small rural town and moved with their family all over the United States and Italy. Now the couple’s three children are
living in Ireland, Idaho and Nevada with their six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
After a career in nursing, Clareen missed raising reg-istered beef cattle and liv-ing in a rural community. In 1984, Clareen and Harold chose to retire in Baldwin County where they raised a beef crossbreed cattle called Gelbray.
These days, they spend their time attending the Zion Lutheran Church in Silverhill, Ala., the Baldwin County Cattlemen and Cat-tlewomen’s Organizations and the Fair activities.
Clareen holds a 50 year membership with the East-ern Star.
Last February, she and Harold celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. They were married in the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa, also know as the Church in the Wild-wood. n
Clareen Wellsthe success of the fair depends upon
dedicated volunteers like Clareen Wells. thank you for your many years of past service as a
volunteer to the Baldwin County Fair.

Livestock Exhibitor Code of ConductThe Baldwin County Fair is committed to responsible animal care and treat-ment. This Code of Conduct outlines what is expected of livestock exhibitors in the handling and exhibiting of all animals at our fair.
This Code has been developed to meet the following objectives:• To ensure the health and well-being of all animals at the fair.• To demonstrate an accurate and re-sponsible animal care message to the public.• To maintain the integrity of all live-stock competitions, displays and sales.• Livestock and poultry must be trans-ported to and from the fair in accor-dance with all humane transport regu-lations and standards.• Loading and unloading must be un-dertaken using proper equipment and procedures.• All animals must be treated and handled in a responsible manner. The well-being of the animals shall take precedence over the demands of own-ers, sellers, buyers, organizers, sponsors and officials.• The care of all animals must be as consistent as possible with their nor-mal schedules and standards. High standards of nutrition, health, sanita-tion, environment and safety must be met at all times.• Livestock should be prepared with proper training, fitting and grooming prior to the fair. Excessive disciplining of animals at the fair is unacceptable.• Exhibitors are expected to provide adequate training for anyone handling their livestock. Untrained individuals, including fair personnel and visitors should not be permitted to handle ani-mals or equipment.• Exhibitors should take every oppor-tunity to enhance public awareness, education and appreciation of proper livestock management and handling practices.
Rules and Regulations for Goats, Sheep, Poultry and Rabbits• The judging of all animals will be judged on accomplishments.• All animal exhibits will stay on ex-hibit for the full duration of the fair. Removal of the animals before the des-ignated dismissal time will result in for-feiture of awards, unless approved by a fair official.• All individuals exhibiting live ani-
mals are required to register their ex-hibits at the livestock registration table on Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the week of the fair. Contestant numbers and stall/pen cards will be assigned at this time.• If the animal does not fall into a spe-cific recognized breed, it will be clas-sified in an “Other” breed category. The same limit applies in this category (*See specific breed limitation)• Stalls/pens, water and bedding will be provided by the management. Each exhibitor will be responsible for fur-nishing their animal’s water and feed devices and for keeping his/her area clean and neat during the fair.• General care, grooming, cleaning stall and feeding of animals will be the re-sponsibility of the exhibitor with assis-tance only from a parent, guardian or fellow exhibitor.• Exhibitors and parents offering guid-ance are expected to demonstrate cour-tesy and respect toward all livestock, peer exhibitors and all individuals in the fairgrounds. Anyone exhibiting in-appropriate behavior may be disquali-fied and/or asked to leave the premises. • All animals must be the actual prop-erty of the exhibitor and registered at the fair under his or her name, not a group or farm name. Should any entry be found to be otherwise entered, any award by judges will be forfeited. • In the event there is but one entry in a class, the placing shall depend on the merit of the entry and the award made at the discretion of the judge.• Each exhibitor is encouraged to fill out a fact sheet about their exhibits to be displayed for additional interesting information about the particular animal or breed.
