•Welcome to the STEM Nova Counselor Training.

•This is a training written by Trisha Bergthold of Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council, with input from other members of the National STEM Committee.

•She is a former member of the National STEM Committee and member of the original writing team for the Nova and Supernova awards.  

•This training is unofficial.

•An official STEM Nova Counselor Training slide deck is available from National.  

•Please be aware that there is a different training to help you become a STEM Supernova Mentor. 

•That training and this one do overlap a bit, since both give you an overall picture of the STEM Initiative, but this training focuses on guiding youth to earn the Nova Awards.  

•This training should take about 2 hours.

• Here is where we are headed today.  

• We will begin with a big picture overview of the whole STEM Initiative.

• You will gain a general sense of the Nova Award requirements including specifics on a few of the awards.

• The bulk of the training will involve key strategies for guiding youth in these awards.

• There will be several activities to illustrate or illuminate these key strategies.

• Hopefully, by the end of this training, you will have acquired both information and practical skills.

•In summer of 2012, BSA rolled out a new set of awards in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the fields of study represented by the acronym STEM.  

•Collectively, these awards comprise the STEM Initiative.

•The STEM Initiative serves several purposes, but in the end, the main goal is to make it “cool” and rewarding for any of our youth members to engage in STEM activities.

•This goal was the driving force behind the structure of the program.  

•The program is structured to have something in it for every kid, not just the geeks.  

•Within each of the three traditional Scouting programs (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing) there are two tiers of awards.

•The Nova is an entry level award that involves fun STEM activities.  

•The Supernova is a higher level award that involves significant independent effort and STEM achievement.

•In each of the three traditional programs, there are 4 parallel NOVA awards, one for each STEM area, with more coming in the future.  

•Each youth can earn all of the Nova awards in his or her program, if desired, in any chosen order.  

•The first Nova earned by a youth is recognized with a Nova patch.  

•Each subsequent Nova award is recognized by a triangular  pi pin that attaches to the patch.

•The requirements for these awards are detailed in the Nova Award Guidebooks, available in local Scout shops and on ScoutStuff.org

•The NOVA award activities are designed to be fun and build on existing STEM‐related elements of BSA’s traditional programs. (STEM‐related belt loops, pins, activity badges, and merit badges.)

• When this program launched, it introduced 19 new awards across the three traditional Scouting programs.  

• Twelve of those awards are Nova awards and they are shown here.  

• The first thing I want you to notice here is that in the Cub Scout program, Cubs and Webelos earn the same Nova awards. 

• The second thing I want you to notice is that some Nova awards are boxed.

• In Cub Scouting, you see two Nova awards surrounded by a dashed box, to indicate that it is recommended (but not required) that Cubs and Webelos earn two Nova awards prior to pursuing a Supernvoa award.  

• In each of Boy Scouting and Venturing, you see three Nova awards surrounded by solid boxes to indicate that it is required that they earn three Nova awards prior to pursuing a Supernova award.

• So, when you become a Nova Counselor, you ARE helping them earn a Supernova award.

• This slide shows where the Supernova awards fit into the scheme.  

• In Cub Scouting, Wolfs and Bears are eligible to earn the Dr. Luis W. Alvarez Supernova, while Webelos are eligible to earn the Dr. Charles Townes Supernova. These awards are independent of each other.   

• In Boy Scouting, there are two Supernova awards, the Harris and the Edison.  These awards must be earned in succession.  Earning the Harris award is the first requirement in earning the Edison award.

• In Venturing, there are three Supernova awards, the Ride, the Wright Brothers, and the Einstein. These awards must be earned in succession.  

• However, the Boy Scout Supernova awards are nearly identical to the corresponding Venturing Supernova awards. So, a Boy Scout can shift to Venturing and use the Supernova awards he earned as a Boy Scout to meet the prerequisites for a Venturing Supernova.

• You must understand that only Venturers can earn the Supernova awards on the far right.

•The cornerstone of the STEM Initiative is the adult guidance for youth pursuing these awards.

•A key method of Scouting is association with quality adults, and the STEM program leverages this method extensively.

•The adults who guide these awards will inspire, challenge, and motivate Scouts to pursue knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them or perceived to be difficult, thus enhancing their growth and self‐confidence.

•In the STEM Initiative, we use the term Nova Counselor to designate those adults who guide youth in completing the Nova award and we use the term Supernova Mentor to designate those adults who guide youth in completing the Supernova awards.

•There are four things about these roles that are the same and there are four things that are different.     

•One big difference is the amount of STEM expertise that you need for each of these roles.

•So, who can be a Nova Counselor?  •Nova Counselors need little to no background in STEM, but they do need to understand the material well enough to help the youth with questions.  •High school math and science is often enough.•In addition, there are many, many examples of everyday activities in which you have gained STEM knowledge or experience perhaps without realizing it.•If you are willing to do a bit of research on those topics that are less familiar, then you should be able to guide youth in the Nova awards quite well.  

•So, what exactly does a youth have to do to earn one of these awards?

•Each award builds on past achievements and exposes youth to new ideas through fun activities.  

•As youth progress through the requirements of a Nova Award, they will engage in new experiences and gain new perspectives about the STEM fields.

•Each award has four major parts, with STEM Activities comprising the major chunk of work.  

•Here, we’re looking at a substantially abbreviated version of the requirements for the Cub Scout Nova Award titled Swing!

•Please do NOT write down what you see here on the slide.

•Each of the 6 requirements for this award was edited harshly in order to fit all of them on one slide.

•The requirements are divided into 4 subsets.

•We have STEM entertainment (one hour), a STEM badge (lots of options), STEM activities (lots of substance there), and STEM in everyday life.

•Notice that the word “discuss” occurs four times.  

•That is a major theme that occurs throughout the program.  

• Here we have an abbreviated version of the Boy Scout Nova award Shoot!

• We have the same four‐part format as in the Cub Scout Nova award.

• Again, the major chunk of effort is in the STEM activities.  

• What’s different is that the Boy Scouts must do three hours of STEM entertainment.. 

• Here, we’re looking at an abbreviated version of the Venturing Nova Award titled Launch!

• What I want you to notice here is that this award is nearly identical to the award on the previous slide.

• The main difference is that where Boy Scouts did merit badges, Venturers do a new kind of activity called an exploration.  

• A Venturing STEM Exploration is intended to be somewhat comparable to the corresponding Boy Scout STEM merit badge with the main difference being that Venturers develop the hands‐on activities they’ll do for their exploration in consultation with their Nova Counselor or Supernova Mentor.

•Here we have an abbreviated version of the Venturing STEM Explorations requirements.  

•Again, don’t write these down.  Go to the guidebook for the full text of these requirements.

•The first thing to understand about these new Venturing STEM Explorations is that there is ONE set of generic requirements that can be applied and adapted to ANY STEM field.  

•If a Venturer wants to do a Venturing STEM Exploration in Chemistry, then he or she will replace the phrase this field with the word chemistry throughout the requirements.  

•The second thing to notice about these new Venturing STEM Explorations is that the hands‐on experiences are identified by the youth and the adult who is guiding the youth, rather than being prescribed, as they are in the Boy Scout merit badges.      

•The lucky duck who gets to guide the youth in their Venturing STEM Explorations is YOU, their Nova counselor, if they are completing the explorations to meet a Nova requirement.  

•I would like to pause here for a moment.

•Is everyone still with me?

•This is the end of the overview part of the training and I’d like to turn to the key strategies part of the training.

•This section of the training will take us almost to the end.  

•The topics you see on the screen will be partially illustrated using hands‐on activities.      

•This is the part of the training that is very practical, and I hope will be the most helpful to you in your work as a Nova counselor.  

•To get started, I want to address a very basic but necessary piece of navigating the Nova counselor role, and that is knowing the sequence of events, at least the theoretical sequence of events, from start to end, of a single counseling assignment. 

•We will look at this issue with an activity titled What Comes First, Next, Last?

•Every Nova award has what I call a “watch and/or read” requirement.  

•The youth are supposed to watch an audiovisual production and/or read some written material on a particular STEM topic.

•This is NOT supposed to be a research activity.  

•It is supposed to be fun with a purpose, or rather entertainment with a purpose.

•If you read the fine print, you will see that the youth are allowed to use live performances to meet this requirement.  

•During the pilot testing of this program, we found that this requirement is actually pretty hard for youth to complete without a LOT of help.  

•Don’t hesitate to think outside the box on this.  

•It doesn’t have to be television.  

• Every Nova award includes a STEM badge.

• Because these STEM badges, at least for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, are already a well‐established part of the youth programs, there are a LOT of resources both inside and outside the council for helping the youth earn these.  

• Check out the badges that are offered at our summer camps! 

• Periodically, our council has merit badge workshop where the boys can complete part of the requirements for a specific merit badge.

• There are numerous outside organizations that offer workshops specifically for Scouts to earn a BSA badge.

• So, be on the lookout for these kinds of opportunities.

•The real substance of every Nova award lies in its STEM activities.  These activities are supposed to be Fun with a Purpose and you are the one who makes them fun.  How do you do that?

•On this slide, you’re looking at pictures of a Cub Scout Pack and a Girl Scout Troop at a joint STEM Event.

•The Cub Scout Bear in the first picture is trying (and failing) to read his weight from an analog scale.  Pretty much all little kids will fail at this kind of task, because it’s hard to figure out what numbers the unlabeled tick marks stand for.  Don’t be afraid to let them fail.  Scouting is very forgiving and accommodating, and oftentimes lessons learned from failure last the longest.

•In the second picture you’re looking at two Cub Scout Bears carrying out a floatability experiment.  Notice where the Scout leader is standing – BEHIND the boys.  THEY are doing the science experiment.  It’s their hands on the materials.   It’s almost always more fun to participate than to watch.

•In the third picture are two Girl Scout Daisies working together to build a Leonardo’s bridge.  Prior to this, they were asked to build ANYTHING with the sticks, as long as it was ONLY sticks.  That kind of open‐ended creativity allows kids to accomplish something significant immediately and gain some skills for the later. The task of building a bridge using sticks and ONLY sticks (no fasteners of any kind) is actually pretty hard for an individual to do on his/her own, so the team work aspect is important,

• When you look at the requirements for the Nova awards, you might wonder, “Where’s the FUN?”.  

• That’s what YOU bring to the program.

• How do you do it?

• We’re going to do a couple of activities, where you’re the Scout.

• Then we’re going to step back and analyze those activities from the perspective of being a Scout leader. 

• Hopefully, what you’ll find is that this is totally do‐able.

• Same award, same requirement.

• Let’s look at a hands‐on activity that could go with this.

• For the next several minutes, you all are going to be Cub Scouts.

• The Boy Scouts and Ventuers learn about simple machines in their Nova awards on engineering.

• Remember that Boy Scouts and Venturers have the same requirements except for the badge requirement.  

• For the next several minutes, you all are going to be Boy Scouts and Venturers.

• Dedicated fun‐gineers are shameless in their scheming for more fun. 

• Here are three really helpful strategies.

• First, recruit a partner in crime.  Two heads are better than one and it’s just more fun for you that way.

• Second, if you haven’t been to your public library lately, you are really missing out on an awesome experience!

• These activities were borrowed and adapted from library books.   

• If you go to the children’s section and ask about books that have science projects in them, you’ll find a treasure trove of great activity ideas for the STEM Nova awards.

• Finally, always try the activities you find to make sure they work, before you do them with kids, and revise if necessary.

• At this point, we’ve talked about STEM Entertainment, STEM Badges, and STEM Activities.

• The last explicit requirement in each Nova award involves connecting STEM to everyday life.  

• It helps to have some sense of what specialists in STEM fields DO in their work.  

• Now, others will describe these fields a little differently, and certainly there is a lot of variability within these fields. 

• There are really no gold standard descriptions of any of these fields.  

• These provide a starting place for conversation.  

• Almost any object can be connected to one or more of the STEM fields.  

• This activity is designed to help you start thinking about how to do this.

• A very simple strategy to use in connecting STEM to everyday life is to focus on how our everyday lives today are different than they were in the past and how they might be different in the future.

• These changes are often due to advances in STEM knowledge and capabilities.

• You can almost always ask one of these three questions in connection to an object we use today.  

• You might not know the answer, but asking a question is the first step in learning something new.

•What does it mean when a requirement says “Discuss with your Counselor?”

•Along the top are three qualities that are helpful in just about any discussion.  

•For STEM in particular, it’s especially desirable for a discussion to point the way to further endeavors.

•Along the bottom are three different ways of knowing things.

•The how‐to’s of doing things are often quite easy for kids to talk about, so this is a good place to start.

•The feelings they experience in the process of learning something new can be quite strong, and lots of kids really get rolling when they have a chance to talk about how frustrating this part was and how exhilarating that part was, and so on.

•So, by the time you get around to asking them specifics of what they know, the ice is broken and they know you are on their side.

•Now, how do you figure out what they know?

•One way to do this is to focus on high gain questions, the ones that are open‐ended, the ones that couldn’t be asked on a standardized test with bubble‐in answer sheets.

•The beauty of a discussion is that every low gain question can be followed by a high gain question that asks, “How do you know?” or “Why is that so?” or “What is your reasoning?”

•Now, open‐ended questions can be double‐edged swords.

•If you ask a kid, “What did you learn today?” he or she will often say, “I dunno” or “Nothin”. 

•Open‐ended with a little specificity is the key.  

•If all else fails, here are some great options.  

•The last of these is my favorite – “I don’t know the answer to that question!  Let’s find out.  We’ll start with that at our next discussion.”

•This is the first of three sample roadmaps for Nova awards I’ll be showing you.  

•The term “roadmap” simply refers to the specific plan that you make (possibly in conjunction with your youth) for meeting each requirement.

•The roadmap describes what choices have been made for each requirement for this Nova award for this youth.  

•Each Nova award can have many different roadmaps.

•This sample roadmap goes with the science Boy Scout Nova award.  

•It’s one of many ways that this Nova award can be completed.  

•This set of choices is ideal for the kid who always wants to flick peas with his spoon at summer camp.  

•Almost everything here is about catapults.  

•For STEM Entertainment, there is an episode of the PBS show Nova, a website, and a book.

•These are great building blocks for working on the other catapult activities in this award.

•Now, there is no obligation to make choices across the requirements that support one another.

•For some Nova awards, it’s not possible to do this, and some youth are better served by hopscotching around a lot of different topics.

• Here is a suggested roadmap for the engineering Venturer Nova Award. 

• This is a roadmap for a high‐adventure, thrill‐seeking Venturer who loves amusement parks.  

• All of the choices and options here focus on supporting requirement 5.

• Amusement Park Physics by Clarence Bakken includes references to our very own California’s Great America. 

• There is also a website called Amusement Park Physics, by a different organization, that lets youth design virtual roller coasters.

• Thrill Ride: The Science of Fun is a movie available at the Imax dome at The Tech museum in downtown San Jose.  

• Now, a Venturer Nova Award roadmap isn’t really complete unless you also create a roadmap for the STEM Exploration.  

• Beginning with the STEM Entertainment might provide you with ideas for the hands‐on activities in the STEM Exploration.  

• Finding just one hands‐on activity to do for the STEM Exploration might help you figure out what the other hands‐on activities could be.  

• For example, the Tech Museum offers a lab workshop titled The Physics of Roller Coasters. 

• Start there and see where it takes you.

• This is a sample roadmap for the mathematics Cub Scout Nova award.

• The suggestions here are especially appropriate for the really young Cub Scouts.  

• This would be a good roadmap of this Nova award for a Wolf den, but some of the choices here would bore the Webelos Scouts to death.   

• The Magic School Bus is a great series of books, but probably not challenging enough for most of your older Cub Scouts.

• This particular book includes illustrations of how your weight changes from planet to planet, which gives the kids a good introduction to the Weight on Other Planets option.

• Cyberchase is an animated series on PBS in which a group of kids is forever escaping the clutches of their evil nemesis using their knowledge of mathematics.  

• In season 1, episode 7, titled Codename Icky, they use their knowledge of secret codes to escape, and this sets the stage very nicely for your Cub Scouts to complete requirement 4.

• If you want your entire Cub Scout Pack to do this Nova award, you certainly can, but you might need 2 or 3 different roadmaps for completing the requirements, each one targeted at kids of different ages and/or abilities.

•No training is complete without some attention to safety issues and risk mitigation.

•The youth that are served by the STEM program range in age from 8 to 20, so there is a pretty wide range of safety issues.  

•You can see a bit of that in these photos.  

•There can easily be a world of difference between the safety issues in the kitchen chemistry of an 8‐year‐old and those in a college chemistry experiment.

•If you mentor the full range of age levels in this program, you will have to attend to many different standards of safety.

•A lot of these risk mitigation strategies are common sense and some are longstanding BSA policies.

• How do you put all of this together to bring the STEM awards to your unit? 

• Here are some suggestions for how to get started.

• We’ve touched on some of these in this training.

• These and the rest are described in more detail in the handout titled, How Does My Unit Get Started on the STEM Awards?

• No matter what, it’s a great idea to plan a visit to a STEM destination early on. 

• This can generate a lot of excitement and momentum, especially if the visit helps to complete a Nova Award requirement.

•Here we have the nuts and bolts involved in getting yourself signed up to become a Nova Counselor.

•The application materials are provided for you in the folder of course materials. 

•These include a page of basics on becoming a Nova Counselor, our council’s Nova Counselor Information form, and a BSA registration form.

•If you are already a member of BSA, you need to fill out the BSA registration form as if you’ve never registered before.

•You still need to include character references and answer all the questions down the right side of the form.

• Welcome back to our objectives for this training.

• Although we couldn’t go over all the fine print, we hope this gave you enough of a taste of the Nova awards program, that you have a running head start on bringing this program to your unit.  

• To get the whole picture and be able to peruse the fine details, you will want to have two documents readily available at a minimum: the Nova Award Guidebooks and BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting.

•We have reached the end of this training.  

•Each of you is now officially trained to be a Nova Counselor for any of the BSA’s three traditional youth development programs.  

•We sincerely hope that you jump in with both feet and have fun!
