Setting the Pace for Technology LeadershipFreescale began designing and manufacturing automotive semiconductors in the 1950s,
when semiconductors were first designed into cars. Since then, we have partnered with
nearly every automaker and tier one supplier in the world. We maintain design centers
and development labs worldwide so we can respond quickly to market needs with cost-
effective solutions.
We are also a leader in driving automotive standards that are designed to benefit the entire
industry by reducing the cost and complexity of vehicle development. Freescale is actively
developing market-ready solutions for:
•Powertraincontrolandhybridtechnologiestoimprovefuelefficiencyandloweremissions
•Advancedsafetyandchassisapplicationstoreduceandevenpreventaccidents
•Bodyelectronicsanddriverinformationsystemstoimprovethedrivingexperience
Transitions AheadWhether it is a methodology for electronics design (such as AUTOSAR or FlexRay™
protocols) or a new approach to system design (such as distributed or centralized
architectures) Freescale is actively working with automakers and their suppliers to improve
vehicle electronics technology.
Future generations of vehicles will require increased on-board computing power, more
efficient analog components and smart actuators, deterministic, multiplexed networking
throughout the vehicle and environment and behavior sensors for a safer, cleaner and more
comfortable ride. Automotive electronic systems built on innovative, zero-defect Freescale
semiconductor technology will enable this vision, and we are continually investing in new
designs that will help our partners redefine the vehicle.

Automotive Quality
Automotive Quality
Quality Standards CertificationsFreescale has a long history of quality system improvement and, as a result, system certifications are vital to our business. We’re proud of our certifications, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), whose standards contribute to improving the development, manufacturing and supply of products and services worldwide. By adopting and adhering to these standards, we raise the levels of quality, safety, reliability, efficiency and adaptability in our products. Freescale’s manufacturing operations and automotive design and business units are certified to ISO/TS 16949.
Integrating Reliability into New TechnologyFreescale uses a phased process to manage new technology introduction. Technical and business goals are assessed before moving to a new phase in development. These phase gates also include specific and detailed reliability criteria. The reliability risks for technology implementation are reduced as the technology progresses through the development cycle. Thus, the reliability risks for a new product can be assessed from the maturity of the underlying technologies. These are real measurements of risk characterized throughout the development cycle and applied to specific product applications.
Performance for the Long TermReliability is the probability that a product (e.g., semiconductor devices) will perform its specified function in a given environment for a specified period of time. We must not only be concerned about quality as our products leave our doors, but also be concerned about product reliability as our products are used in specific environments over time. Semiconductor failure rate is known to follow a “bathtub curve” with an initially decreasing failure rate followed by a long, low-level failure rate and eventual wear out. We perform stresses to characterize each part of this curve. Test and burn-in are used to screen infant mortality (or early product failures), and thus, reduce the early failure rate. Extended life tests are performed to verify the intrinsic limits of devices that result in wear out.
Because the failure rate of semiconductor devices is inherently low, the industry uses accelerated testing to assess semiconductor reliability. During accelerated tests (such as those described in AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101—an Automotive Electronic Council standards publication) elevated stress conditions (voltage, temperature, humidity, current) are used to produce, in a shorter period of time, the same failure mechanisms as would be observed under normal use conditions. The objective is to identify failure mechanisms and

Correlation
eliminate them as a cause of failure during the useful lifetime of a product.
Freescale product reliability rests on a strong foundation of proven validation principles. Our efforts prior to qualification—including designing, modeling, testing and test vehicle investigations—drive low-risk manufacturing processes. We use industry standard testing to ensure our customers have reliable products appropriate for their specific application.
Typical Freescale accelerated stress tests performed during product qualification are based on AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101 conditions and refer to JEDEC stress descriptions. In addition, we perform tests and stresses beyond industry standards to drive our zero defects goal.
Product Analysis Labs CapabilitiesZero Defects. That’s Freescale’s goal. But Zero Defects is a journey, and the Product Analysis Labs provide the navigation to that final destination. These same labs also help Freescale develop cutting-edge
products with continually improving quality to exceed your needs and those of your customers.
The Product Analysis Labs utilize industry standard techniques and internally developed tools, enabling Freescale to locate sub-micron sized defects among hundreds of millions of transistors on a silicon IC. This process is critical to providing the necessary information for Freescale to improve its products.
Our Product Analysis professionals throughout the world are dedicated to helping Freescale find the root cause of any potential product defect. Our goal is an accurate understanding of the defect, regardless of the cause, to enable rapid corrective action and problem resolution.
Continuous ImprovementContinuous improvement is part of what we do every day at Freescale. Be it a large project with vast amounts of detailed data analysis or an employee realizing that their particular production tool is not running as it should, continuous improvement is part of our culture and everyone’s responsibility.

combustion engine (ICE) and a battery-
powered electric motor (E-motor) to power
the drivetrain, improving fuel economy and
reducing harmful emissions. In addition to the
internal combustion engine control unit, other
modules are required to control the electric
traction motor motor, recharge the battery and
manage the energy used to run the auxiliaries,
such as the start/stop system and fuel and
water pumps.
Freescale’s MCU portfolio includes a number of
electric motor control solutions with an available
low-level software library. We are continually
developing new products with dedicated
peripheral sets for the electric architectures used
in hybrid vehicles. For example, our intelligent
distributed control (IDC) device integrates the

Start/Stop SystemThe start/stop system is the first step in
the car electrification. Also referred to as
micro-hybrid technology, this system shuts
the engine off when it would otherwise idle
while burning fuel and restarts it instantly on
demand. This is a particularly effective system
in urban stop-and-go driving conditions where
fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be
improved by up to 15 percent.
Freescale offers 8-, 16- and 32-bit MCUs plus
analog switches, system basis chips (SBC)

Electrical Pump Motor ControlElectronically controlled fuel and water pumps
can more precisely deliver accurate fuel and
coolant flow and pressure within the engine
environment and operate only when required.
This not only helps ensure economical fuel
management but also that the engine runs at
optimum temperatures for the most efficient
operation. Electronic control is essential
for carmakers to develop a beltless engine
and to remove all engine driven loads, such
as electric power steering and the A/C
compressor that need to operate even
when a hybrid vehicle has its engine off.
As an industry leader in electric motor control,
Freescale offers a wide variety of 8-, 16- and
32-bit MCUs plus analog switches, SBCs and
transceivers for building solutions for vehicle
electrical motor control.
Distributed systems incorporate smart
actuators where networked mixed-mode
control devices are directly mounted on the
actuator. Based on Freescale’s 16-bit S12
MCU platform, a distributed system can help
reduce the ECU developer’s design effort.
The intelligent distributed control (IDC)
products combine an MCU with SBC
functionality, drivers and physical network
interfaces (LIN and/or CAN) into a single
package, providing a smaller, more robust
and cost-effective system solution.

Airbag SystemsThe central component of an airbag system
is a control unit that combines a 16- or
32-bit MCU with a set of local acceleration
sensors. Depending on the complexity of
the system, additional satellite sensors
provide supplementary crash information via
standardized sensor buses, such as Peripheral
Sensor Interface 5 (PSI5) and Distributed
System Interface (DSI). Processed sensor
inputs are used to fire front, side and curtain
airbags with specialized multi-channel squib
driver circuits.
As an additional safety factor, highly efficient
switched-mode power supply components
allow the system to keep operating for several
hundred milliseconds if the battery connection
is lost during an accident. Freescale Products for Airbag Systems

Electronic Stability ControlElectronic stability control (ESC) helps drivers
maintain control of their vehicles. By using a
microcontroller, a set of sensors to measure
vehicle lateral and longitudinal acceleration,
yaw rate, wheel speed and steering angle, and
actuators in the antilock braking system, a
reduction of over 34 percent of single vehicle
car crashes and 59 percent single vehicle SUV
crashes is expected.
The dual-core 32-bit MCU enables individual
control of brake forces at each wheel. If a loss
of steering control is detected, the ESC can
take control of braking and active suspension
functions to stabilize the car.
In addition, by increasing the computing
power of the ESC system, active and passive
safety systems can be networked together. Freescale Products for Electronic Stability Control

Electric Power SteeringThe central electronic elements of today’s
power steering systems are modern 16- and
32-bit single- or dual-core MCUs designed for
safety-critical applications. These controllers
can provide enhanced computing power and
specialized peripherals for complex electric
motor control functions.
Integrated power supply solutions—or
system basis chips—are also important
elements of a power steering control unit.
They provide connectivity to automotive
busses, such as CAN and LIN. For MOSFET
power stages control, integrated pre-drivers
are typically used to interface with the MCU
directly or via SPI.

Adaptive Cruise Control and Automotive RadarBeyond passive safety systems, active safety
systems play a major role in reducing traffic
fatalities and the monetary impact of vehicular
accidents. Active safety systems include
adaptive cruise control (ACC) and collision
warning systems with automatic steering and
braking intervention.
In a collision warning system, an MCU-
controlled77GHztransmitteremitssignals
reflected from objects ahead, aside and to
the rear of the vehicle, and are captured by
multiple receivers integrated throughout the
vehicle. Using a high-performance 32-bit
single- or dual-core MCU with embedded
flash and RAM, the radar system can detect
and track objects in the frequency domain
triggering a driver warning of an imminent
collision and initiate ESC emergency
intervention.

feedback control motors more efficiently.

AUTOSARWhat is AUTOSAR?AUTOSAR software addresses the challenge
of rising code complexity by providing an
open automotive software architecture, jointly
developed by automobile makers, suppliers
and tool developers. AUTOSAR supports the
development of innovative yet standardized
electronic systems that improve quality,
performance, safety and user friendliness. It
also helps simplify the process of updating
software and hardware over the life of a vehicle.
Freescale’s AUTOSAR-Compliant Software Developing low-level software for our MCU
allows us to optimize the software for each
specific MCU family or even derivative.
While the industry trend is to work on the
Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL),
Freescale is the only vendor to also offer an
AUTOSAR operating system (OS).
Partner Supported ProductsOn demand and based on third-party solutions,
Freescale also offers a complete AUTOSAR
Basic Software package up to the RTE layer.
