Has Death Taken A Loved One of Yours?
Perhaps a relave, neighbor or close friend? Maybe
a fellow employee or employer?
Before Jesus came, the hope of a resurrecon was at
best vague. There are a couple of references which provided
some insight. I share them with you.
“But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he
will surely take me to himself.” Psalm 49:15
“But your dead will live, Lord; their bodies will rise—let
those who dwell in the dust wake up and shout for joy—your
dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth
to her dead.” Isaiah 26:19
Not unexpectedly, our Savior made a unique claim when
he said: “I am the resurrec+on and the life. The one who
believes in me will live, even though they die.” John 11:25
The apostle Paul twice elaborated on the resurrecon.
Recall them with me:
“I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the per-
ishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mys-
tery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in
a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the
trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and
we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself
with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperisha-
ble, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is
wri3en will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in vic-
tory.” 1 Corinthians 15:50-54
“Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about
those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the
rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that
Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will
bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are
s+ll alive, who are le9 un+l the coming of the Lord, will cer-
tainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the
Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud com-
mand, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet
call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 A9er that,
we who are s+ll alive and are le9 will be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so
we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one
another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The David Lee King Memorial Scholarship Fund was established
in 1992 as a permanent fund to provide higher educaon grants
for students who have been accepted at a Church of Christ col-
lege. GiAs of any amount are encouraged. Your giA will be add-
ed to this permanent scholarship fund, where the principal is
perpetually invested and the income is used for educaonal
grants. David Lee King served as an elder at Southside and loved
the children of this congregaon. He knew that the future of the
Church depends on their leadership and it is our responsibility to
see that they are prepared to live good, Chrisan lives, molded in
an environment that puts Christ first. No other memorial to
Brother King could be more fi=ng. All checks should be made
payable to Southside Church of Christ and marked for the David
Lee King Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please do not put these
checks in the regular contribuon but give them to an Elder or
one of the office staff.
