The following August Newsletter article is a reprint of a letter sent to

our Sunday school families in July. It’s reprinted here for your information.

Dear Parents of Trinity Youth,

Peaceful greetings.

This is my special invitation to you to encourage you and your whole family to be at worship on Sunday, July

28th (9:00 AM worship). But, before I tell you why, I need to give you some background. (If you want to skip

directly to the invitation, see the boxed area on the next page of this letter.)

As you are undoubtedly aware, the retirement of our long-time and beloved Christian Education director, Coreen

Johnson, has left us with a huge void in our church staffing. Our Family Faith Formation Team (3FT, formerly known

as our Christian Education Committee) has been, for almost a full year now, diligently, deliberately and carefully

studying what to do next. Some worthwhile ideas have been pursued but have not worked out for us. This, naturally,

has created some sense of urgency and “what next” questions for our congregation, especially since Coreen is now

officially retired as of this past June. As your 3FT we have intentionally followed the advice that “We do not want to

rush into failure.” Consequently, we have committed ourselves to learning more about the dynamics of how a deep,

lasting and consequential faith is formed in us from birth through our growing years and into deep adulthood.

Working with Karen Gieseke, our Southeastern Minnesota Synod’s Youth & Family resource staff person, this is what

we have learned (from a National Study of Youth and Religion):

• Most American teenagers have religious beliefs

• Organized religion doesn’t matter much to most teenagers

• For a significant minority of teenagers, faith does matter

• Adolescents are incredibly inarticulate about their faith

• Highly religious teenagers fare better than less or non-religious teenagers (in terms of risky behaviors, quality of family and adult relationship, moral reasoning and behavior, community participation, media consumption, sexual activity, and emotional well-being)

• Teenager mimic the religious devotion of their parents

This discovery has served to further energize us as leaders of our congregation on our Church Council and our

Family Faith Formation Team.

In our conversations we learned that two of our sister Lutheran congregations in Albert Lea – Salem and Ascension --

are also in something of a transition point in their development of their Christian faith formation needs. Entering into

mutual conversation, again being led by Karen Gieseke, we are exploring the possibility of something intriguing and

exciting that we want to share with you and your family.

An introductory information article was distributed on Sunday, June 30th at worship and a copy is posted on the

bulletin board by the church office.

Now, at our 9:00 AM worship on July 28th, a more developed announcement will be presented by a team of

folks from our three congregations.

As parents of our Sunday School children, you and your family (and your extended family of grandparents,

aunts, uncles and significant adults in the lives of your children) will be most directly affected by the

conversation that develops from this presentation and what happens next in our Family Faith Formation

Ministry.

We are eagerly looking forward to this presentation and anticipate that you will bring many thoughts and

ideas that will lead to further conversation. So, a follow-up conversation is scheduled for Sunday, August

25th in all three of our congregations. We will meet in air conditioned Trinity Hall following our 9:00 AM

worship (refreshments provided).

Your presence and participation is vital to what happens next.

This is a unique opportunity to shape and influence the faith development in your children and family’s life.

Please make every effort to be at worship on July 28th for the brief introductory presentation (about 7

minutes) and August 25th for more in-depth conversation (about 1 hour).

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America church-wide assembly

will be convening August 12-17 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Our Trinity Lutheran Church is invited to pray for those attending – for wisdom in discernment as decisions are made, for joyous celebrations as we worship and minister together in Christ, and for safety in travel. Sonya Zieske will be attending as a voting member and Pastor Zieske as a visitor.

Those of you who wish to be a part of this community in Christ through prayer are encouraged to do so. The following is a suggested prayer to guide your devotions:

Synod-Wide Installation Choir is being

formed for the installation of Pastor Steve Delzer as Bishop to our Southeastern Minnesota synod of the ELCA Saturday, September 7, 2:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church, Owatonna.

There will be an organizational rehearsal of the choir Sunday evening, August 11, 6:30 PM, at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea under the direction of Robert Tewes. Please attend this rehearsal if you are interested in being part of the choir.

The Synod Council invites all members of

the synod to a dinner August 22 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Rochester to celebrate 12 years of ministry of Rev. Harold (Huck) Usgaard as bishop of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod. A reception will be at 6:00 PM, dinner at 7:00 PM, and program at 7:30 PM. The cost is $25 per person. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT TRINITY?

Boundary Waters Youth Trip

is coming August 2014.

We will be having an informational picnic on Sunday August 11, 2013. This

trip is for 7-12 grade students. Anyone interested should attend. The picnic will be at Jeff and Kim Nelson’s home, 24168 770th Ave., starting at 5 pm. Meal will be provided. Bring your parents and find out more

about this fantastic opportunity.

There will be a fundraiser for the BWCA trip on Sunday August 4th. We will need 20 volunteers to sell concessions at the Demo Derby. This is a great fundraiser for the trip. Any Trinity member can help sell pickles, pop, popcorn, and blizzards. Times and shifts will be determined. Sign up to help on the “Opportunity Table” by the church office.

combined Circles share the Bible Study presented by Pastor Zieske.

These summer studies give us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of scripture and to enjoy the fellowship of women from Circles other than the one we usually attend. Hope to see you there.

In an interesting conversation with a representative of the Salvation Army

following last year’s UNDIES SUNDAYS, we learned that in

addition to helping needy families who are having trouble with back to school costs, the children’s underwear that we donate goes to special needs classes, school social workers, and after school programs. It is our understanding that Trinity is the only church in the area that has this much needed program. On Sundays, August 18

th and 25

th there will be a basket in the back of the church where you can drop off your donation, and do keep in mind, we hope to collect an equal amount of undies for boys and girls of elementary school age.

The Southeastern Minnesota Synodical Women’s Organization

Convention will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea on Saturday, September 21. The theme this year is “Celebration of Many Generations: Past, Present and Future.” Registration/coffee is from 8 to 9 AM and the convention runs to 4 PM with a keynote speech by Kimber Schletty on Mission 21, Bible study with Pastor Tammy Dahlvang, breakout sessions, music, lunch and worship. This is your opportunity to learn from and fellowship with women from churches throughout Southeastern Minnesota. Registration is $25 and will be covered by the TLCW for anyone wishing to participate. Contact Erna Berthelsen , 373-7725 or Bev Jackson Cotter, 373-4748 for registration info. TLCW is one of the area women’s groups that are helping with the hosting and lunch that day.

ARE YOU STRESSED???

Once again I was torn what to write about. I am assuming that Allan our

Family Faith Formation Committee chair will be informing you about our

ongoing conversation regarding collaboratively sharing a fulltime Family

Faith Formation Coordinator with two other churches. And hopefully he

will share how the Education Committee along with congregational

members will take on the responsibilities of that position until a decision is

made and we have someone on staff. It is an exciting time!!! I do invite

and encourage you to participate in the discussion regarding Family Faith

Formation. Be part of the conversation….

I looked over my past newsletters and found that at least once every year I

devote one newsletter to stress relief and it just so happened that I received a

timely email from a friend regarding stress in our lives and some helpful

things to do. So I am sharing it with you.

A Woman’s Spin on Stress

A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, “half empty or half full?” She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of water”, she inquired with a smile.

Answers called out ranged from 8-20 ounces.

She replied , "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on."

"As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night... Pick them up tomorrow.”

• Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue!

• Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

• Drive carefully... It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.

• If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

• If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

• It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

• Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

• Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

• Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

• Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

• Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

• We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names; and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

• A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

• Have an awesome day, and know that someone has thought about you today.

stayed busy in July. We would like to thank everyone who came out and played Volleyball or if you just came out to be a Cheerleader. It was good to see everyone having fun.

We would also like to say THANK YOU to

everyone who helped with our July Brunch. All the proceeds will go to the RELAY FOR

LIFE. Hopefully someday no family will have to hear the words “you have CANCER”. We will continue to help fight to find a CURE . If we can help one person we have made it all worth while.

Your Life and Mission Gang has put out a CHALLENGE TO YOU !! We want to help the TLCW get donations for the Baby Care Kits, School Kits and Personal Care Kits. Please help us fill the box and the play pen with items for these kits. If you don't want to go shopping you can contact Darcy @ 402-7886 and I will do the shopping for you. There are lists on the table by Mary's office of what is needed.

Shinefest is coming up there will be more in the bulletins as it gets closer.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC

I sat in Church a couple weeks ago and was blown away by our Gospel singers. Under the direction of our Nancy Halvorsen, these people were awesome. Both Mike and I felt the same way. It moved you and opened you up to the wonderful message delivered by Pastor Ken Jensen, who has filled in so well for Pastor Z., while he took a well deserved respite. If you have not been able to be at Church lately, try to make it there soon as it will definitely be worth it in so many ways. Some churches downsize in the summer months. Well, I think we tend to kick it up. Another thing you might have missed was the angelic voice of Taylor Peek singing solos. We are truly blessed to have her as part of our Trinity family!

There is still another month or so before we really gear up for the Fall season, with all that entails. We are getting ready for the “Musician Appreciation Coffee” on Sept. 22nd, which is always a fun event.

If you are interested in becoming a Communion Assistant or a Home Communion Assistant or maybe you would like for someone to bring you Communion as you are not able to come to Church, please call myself at 373-0245, or Mary in the Church office at 373-2466. We do know there are people not able to come and we have a very willing and capable group who would love to come to you the first Sunday of the month. Most of us are not great at stating our needs or even that we would like to volunteer, but please just let someone on this committee know, and we will direct you where you are needed. I am sure we can find you the right fit.

Our next meeting is Sunday Aug. 4th following the service in the Confirmation Center, please join us with any positive ideas.

Thrivent Choice Dollars

Thank you to Trinity’s Thrivent members who have contributed to Trinity through the Thrivent Choice Dollars program. This has provided a tremendous amount of funds ($8,342 last year) to use in our church that have benefited many people and programs. In 2013 you again have to designate Trinity as the organization you want your “Choice Dollars” to go to. (This must be done each year.) If you have not done this yet this year, it can be done by simply calling Thrivent (1-800-847-4836) and saying “Thrivent Choice” when prompted. It takes less than two minutes. Thank you for supporting Trinity through this valuable program.

4 Money Questions

Trinity Church Councilors and other Leaders respond to “4 Money Questions.”

What has been your experience, or struggle about giving?

God has always provided. The prophet Malachi, chapter 3 states, “God says test me in this. See I am good.” Take away from God and he takes away from you. God has always come through even when I have not deserved it.

What have you seen happen in the church with money given?

The bills get paid. Sunday school offerings go to support four students over seas. During Lent when we bring in the “barns” for God’s Global Barnyard that goes toward animals for families that are poor in other countries. Otherwise I don’t see much money helping needy people in our community.

What are your hopes for the church’s and members giving?

Instead of “getting by” we could be out reaching so many more and doing so much more good. Jesus said, “Be the hands and feet!”

What do you want the congregation to know about giving.

As people (we) cannot out give God! Saturday, August 10, Community Sew Day …

Bring your sewing machine to the Senior Center at the Skyline Mall. Come anytime between 8:45 AM – 4:00 PM. Materials will be provided. Bring your own sack lunch. Coffee, water and cookies provided. They will sew quilts that will be given to community members after the picnic.
