Journeys
The smells of a Lake District farm very powerfully remind me of the times I have spent there. Walking around the farm, the sights and scenes are so
familiar: the dappled light in the woods, the vein of pink granite running
through the crag and the stepping stones that bucked me into the river after a late night at the Newfield. When I visited last month it seemed nothing had
changed, and yet so much had.
On an afternoon walk I couldn‟t resist swimming in a deep plunge pool below a waterfall in the gorge. The water was cold but wonderfully
refreshing, always on the move navigating its way to the sea. There was a
time I used to plunge my head into the water so that the sensation would momentarily stop me thinking about a situation that I couldn‟t change.
Water, like time, rushing past... and we are powerless to stop them both.
Water in the river, and time, are always on the move and so are we. A
reading that is sometimes chosen at weddings repeats the line, “Arise my
love, my fair one and come away” a reminder that life is a journey and that
we are constantly on the move - on the move physically, spiritually, emotionally. All our relationships are journeys too – journeys to new places
and new experiences. Love is about calling to another and inviting them to
journey with you, “Arise my love, my fair one and come away.”
As we journey we can choose to invite others to join us. Sometimes we will
face challenges and obstacles, like water encountering rocks and pools. At these times we will need to be conscious that we do not inadvertently lose
contact with the important people who journey with us.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference. The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr
Every blessing

SOUTHROP PLAYGROUND APPEAL
In earlier years, funds were kindly donated by village residents and others to both refurbish and also maintain the children‟s playground at Southrop. As
everyone is aware, these funds have been put to very good use, providing an
ideal facility for children of a wide age range from both within and outside the village.
Unfortunately, these funds, which are used primarily for routine maintenance
work to ensure compliance with safety regulations and inspections, are now
fast running out and, in order to maintain the playground in a fit-for-purpose condition, further financial support is urgently required. (Currently, the
Parish Council generously covers the insurance expenses).
If you can help (especially those whose children have enjoyed the
playground facility in the past) a donation of any size would be very much appreciated. Cheques should be made payable to „Southrop Playground„
and sent to Appletree Cottage, Southrop, Nr. Lechlade, Gloucestershire GL7
3PH .
Many thanks.

THE COTSWOLD DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY
The Cotswold Decorative and Fine Arts Society resumes its lecture
programme on Wednesday, September 14th, after the summer break.
The title of the lecture is "The Queenes Pickture - Portraits of Elizabeth 1st"
by Dr Gillian White.
This lecture examines the portraiture of „Good Queen Bess‟ and traces the development of an English icon from tentative beginnings to the triumph of
royal propaganda.
Gillian White trained as a historian but was then seduced by history of art.
She is particularly interested in the visual arts and architecture of sixteenth-
century England.
The lecture will take place at Bradwell Village Hall, Burford OX18 4XA. It
begins at 2pm with coffee and tea available from 1.15pm. Non-members are very welcome (suggested donation £8).
For further information, please see our website www.cotswolddfas.org

HATHEROP PRIMARY SCHOOL
We are very proud to announce yet another sporting victory. Our cricket team won
an inter-school competition against Southrop, Kempsford and Lechlade and were
presented with a group trophy and individual medals.
Charlotte Fryer Eccles, one of our Year 6 parents, has done a photography course
with some Year 6 pupils and, as always, they have produced the most stunning
photos .
Mrs Wilder and her Class 4 pupils had a very exciting and successful Book Launch,
which was very well attended. They sold out pretty instantly and there was a queue
of people wanting to order their book entitled „Bob‟s Big Adventure‟, which retailed
at £1.20. The profit they made (which was not inconsiderable!) will give each
contributing author a little treat and then will be spent on books for their class. Well
done to all of them, and a big „thank you‟ to Ginette Chalmers and Richard Bullen
who have throughout the year supported some of Class 4 with their reading.
Miss Flood led an extremely successful America Day focusing on the native
Americans of the Mid-West on July 4th. The children made tepees, ceremonial sticks
and jingly ankle bracelets which they used for dancing. They also played native
American games with stones they had painted, listened to myths in a circular tent,
researched how buffaloes were used, and even had a taster of corn cakes, dough on a
stick and buffalo stew all cooked on a big camp fire. If you happened to be passing
the school that day, I‟m sure you would have heard the sound of drums resonating
from the Hall as the children drummed and danced a pow - wow in the playground.
We are grateful to Bettina Harvey, Orla Hall and Ian Powell for their support on that
day and also to Time Downes Hall who came and led the drumming and to Peter
Burton who frazzled not only in the heat of the day but from the heat of the camp
fire that he cooked on all day.
Mark Jennings (a former parent) and his wife, Kim also came and helped and Mark
even drove all the way over to Warminster to buy the buffalo meat! Thanks!
We were very impressed by a music group from Farmor‟s who came and entertained the whole school with a jazz concert.
James and Erica Graham did us proud yet again at Allium when they prepared a 9
course meal for the Year 6 pupils, as a Leavers‟ treat. It was a memorable occasion
and it was wonderful to see everyone tucking in to frogs‟ legs and rabbit quite apart
from all the other delicious food. Thank you to them.
Class 3 took part in the Fairford Country Dance Festival and some of our pupils took
part in the Area Sports. Congratulations to these pupils who did very well : Joseph
Powell, who came first in the standing high jump, Poppy Youngs who came 2nd in
skipping, Josse White who came 2nd in throwing, and Jessica Skinner and Gabriel
