From Page 17It's been a steady and impressive return to the top

for the Kigoos, who in 2012 came agonizingly close to winning their first provincial team championship since 1991—finishing second and within 300 points of White Rick Guppies—before slipping back to 13th last year.

Batara is particularly encouraged this year by the Kigoos' depth, which is reflected in the strong divi-sions that top the region. She anticipates several of the swimmers in these divisions will contend for relay honors this weekend.

Division 1 boys Thomas Chen, Zachary Kennedy and Aden Pang have already swam provincial qualifying times, while Division 2 girls Lianna Holz, Jasmine Ren and Elizabeth Lee have done the same. The Division 4 boys' group is also strong and per-formed well at provincials last year, winning all the relays with several individual medals as well.

"I think we'll see something similar this year (from the latter group)," says Batara. "Vincent Lee and Peiyu Song in particular place high in the provincial rank-ings, so I'm excited to see what that group will do."

The Kigoos also appear to have boosted its senior team, with its Division 5 girls (Dakota Chan, Tamara Yoshida, Roselyn Thom, and Kaitlyn Lam), Division 6 girls (Elizabeth Suen, Kaitlin Watson, and Anita Rudakov) and Division 6 boys (Brandon Lam, Ryan Lam, Silas Tsui, Eric Chang and Frankie Lui) all capable of medalling.

"I'm excited about a couple of swimmers who either didn't attend regionals or provincials last year," says Batar. "Chan only swam one day of regionals and provincials last year due to field hockey nationals and so didn't swim her best event, the 100 backstroke. Suen also didn't attend provincials last year, but had broken records at regionals, and Lui, who didn't swim at all last season, has always been one of the region's if not the province's top breaststrokers alongside Brandon Lam."

Additionally, several newcomers fuel the hope. Many are already at the top of their events, including Thomas Chen (Division 1), Jasmine Ren and Lianna Holz (Division 2), David Hyman (Division 3), Teaghan Frid (Division 4) and Jacob Lee (Division 5). One of the Kigoos' senior coaches, Andre Kudaba, will be racing this weekend. He was one of the top swim-mers in Canada before shifting his focus to water polo and coaching.

"Overall, I have seen such great work ethic this year, on the part of our coaches and our swimmers, so I'm fairly certain this will translate into some incredible swims," says Batara. "We hope to qualify as many swimmers and relay teams to provincials (Aug. 11 to 17 in Kamloops) as possible. But most of all, I just want all of our swimmers to race hard, have fun, make new friends, and see all of their hard work pay off, because they deserve it."

For some in this tech-nologically driven society, it can be dif-

ficult to unplug from our smartphones, tablets or desktop computers. I con-fess to being one of those who texts and e-mails in public transit, or carries my phone while running.

I am addicted to running, but also to my phone. While I’ve not yet juggled three oranges while running uphill check-ing my e-mails, it sure feels like it. The fact I still haven’t fallen arse over tea kettle while multitasking only indicates my guardian angels are on the ball or I have enough horseshoes.

Being outdoors is good for our physical and mental health and for our eyes as well. It may be difficult to leave the electronic devices at home, but our eyes may be taking a toll by staring daily into the small, smaller or smallest screens.

In an e-mail interview with Dr. Jessica Chan, Doctor of Op-tometry at the Mount Pleasant Optometry Clinic in Vancouver, she reveals why it is important to give your eyes a rest.

"There is no doubt that computer usage has increased rapidly through the years. In 2012, Statistics Canada showed that 86 per cent of households

in B.C. have access to Inter-net compared to 79 per cent in 2010.  This percentage is increasing and we are using our gadgets more and more outside of the household and work settings, especially with handheld devices."

Chan continued, “Prolonged and continuous activities on a computer or close-up gadget can result in a temporary con-dition known as ‘computer vi-sion syndrome.’ The symptoms include eye strain, fatigue, intermittently blurred vision, red eyes, dry eyes and even headaches.”

Chan believes the best treat-ment for computer vision syndrome is to properly rest the eyes and to refocus at a dif-ferent distance.

“Any activities that allow our eyes to focus on the far distance are a great break from all the close-up work we have to do. Running is a great example that allows us to take in the environment around us and focus on objects that are further away,” she said, adding, “computer vision syndrome was just termed within the last eight years by the American Optometric Association. Since computer and smartphone use has increased so much in the past decade, most people do not realize how much effect these gadgets have on their eyes.”

Chan, also a runner, has some advice for those who carry their phones: “Smartphones are amazing devices. When I'm on my runs, the cellphone is

my watch, my GPS tracker, and my music player. Carrying your phone on your run is a great idea as long as you are not looking at your phone while you are running.”

Chan noted: “Recently, there has been a lot of research into the negative effects of the blue-violet light being emitted by LED lights. This very specific wavelength of blue light has been shown to harmfully affect retinal cells. Computer moni-tors, tablet screens and phone screens mostly use LED light sources. With accumulated ex-posure to this blue light, there are studies that have shown in-creased retinal cell damage which can potentially increase the chances of age-related macular degeneration.

"Not all blue lights are bad, and there are new lenses with special coatings that specifi-cally block off this particular wavelength of harmful blue light. Another way to protect our eyes is to take breaks from our screens. Those who need the most protection from this blue light are the people who work prolonged hours in front of the computers and those with higher risks for age-relat-ed macular degeneration (e.g. if there is a family history).”

Dr. Chan says with computer usage there is a simple rule she calls the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes of computer use, take at least a 20 second break and try to re-focus on an object 20 feet away. This will help relax the focusing system.

Another tip: Wear sunglasses to help protect you from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, even on cloudy days, when running. If you are attached to your gadgets, learn to turn off your phone and unplug yourself before heading for the great outdoors.
