Wander back to the ferry terminal and here you’ll fi nd the launching point of Magic Broomstick Tours. The ‘broomsticks’ are Segways – the
two-wheeled self-balancing electric vehicles that you will be given comprehensive training in the safe riding and operation of before the tour begins. Take a short ride or a two hour guided tour. Learn about the Military forts around Devonport and be gobsmacked by the panoramic views of Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf. For more information on Devonport, see the spotlight on Devonport section on page 46. Catch the 12.15pm Fullers Ferry back to central Auckland – look towards the city and how the Sky Tower rises above and pinpoints a focus to the Auckland skyline. How high do you think it is? This afternoon you may just get a feeling for exactly how high it is! Phone 09 445 4035 www.magicbroomsticktours.co.nz
AfternoonIt’s time to get a little bit out of your comfort zone, so what will you do? Walk the edge of the Sky Tower, 182 metres above the hustle and bustle
of Auckland city, and get a true 360 degree view with not even a handrail between you and the view? Or take a leap of adventure and jump off the edge? You can do both with SkyWalk and SkyJump packages. The friendly crew will make sure you have the time of your life, and provide photos so you can show what a daredevil you are. Afterwards, you can toast your courage and the views at the Sky Lounge. Have a well-deserved rest and enjoy a good café lunch with million-dollar views. You will have easily been able to fi nd Devonport, but on the near side of the Waitemata Harbour, can you fi nd the white building on a hill to the east? That is the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

EveningReturn to the city, and back to the waterfront; head towards one of
Auckland’s newest dining precincts, the
wonderful Wynyard Quarter. Discover the
best of fresh cuisine at the water’s edge – with 10 bars
and eateries in an authentic working wharf setting.
Watch as yachts and sailboats return to or leave the
harbour. In the warmer months, this area hosts night
markets and an outdoor cinema. New Zealand is famed
for our delicious seafood, so head to Live Fish Seafood Restaurant, where you can select your dinner from a
live tank and be assured that you’ll receive the freshest
seafood on to your table.

Take a stroll back to QueenStreet, where the beautiful CivicTheatre, one of the few remaining Atmospheric Theatres in the world will
wow you. Built in 1929, The Civic is designed to evoke a Moorish garden at night, with turrets, minarets, spires and tiled roofs and two guardian Abyssinian Panther statues. When Broadway shows or big-time dance performances come to town, they are often staged at The Civic. If you’re lucky, you may even get tickets to the two-week season of The Illusionists (see page 12) where seven of the world’s greatest magicians create the boldest most spectacular magic show ever staged in New Zealand. Have coff ee and cake at the café outside before heading into the night scene (we suggest Freddy’s Ice House (see page 19) (Princes Wharf, 201 Quay Street for chilled times) or back to your welcoming room at your accommodation.

Auckland may be a marineplayground, but it also is home to some signifi cant heritage; catch
the green Link bus (adult fares $1.90)
to Parnell, and ask the driver to stop near the
Auckland War Memorial Museum — the cultural
and spiritual touchstone for New Zealanders. The
Museum is also the fi rst stop for anyone wishing
to gain an insight into New Zealand and its people.
Within the neo-classical building priceless Maori
treasures, amazing natural history, daily Maori
cultural performances, and an ever-changing feast
of local and international exhibitions (see page 15)
are to be explored and enjoyed.

Sitting pretty between two (extinct) volcanoes, and just a
12-minute ferry ride from the CBD, the charming seaside
village of Devonport is perfectly placed to delight all. Quaint
shops, lively eateries, boutique fashion and intriguing
history will entice you to extend your stay.
North Head is the landmark volcano with panoramic views out to Rangitoto Island and across to the city skyline. This popular picnic spot is home to a series of military tunnels built during World Wars I and II. As with much of Auckland, nature is always going to be the shining star – from North Head you can take a stroll along Cheltenham beach.
Devonport is the home of the New Zealand Navy base, and you can get an insight into maritime history at the Naval Museum at the foot of North Head. Despite all this military history, Devonport was the fi rst community in New Zealand to declare itself nuclear-free and the community has a long history of supporting arts and culture with plenty of art galleries.
Let us take you on a Guided Tour or Ride around the historic village of Devonport. Glide to the top of the Volcanic Cones for awesome views of Rangitoto and Auckland City. SkinSense treatments – the ultimate in personal pampering
On Monday evenings there’s a folk club at ‘The Bunker’ on Mt Victoria, in winter there’s a games evening at Bette’s, and there are often live music events (as well as movies) at the historic cinema.
For such a small village, the Devonport dining options are impressive; Spanish tapas, gourmet pizza, a French delicatessen, a Greek taverna, a coff ee roastery, a chocolate shop, friendly pubs, gelato bars, an English foodstore, Italian and Asian eateries and many cafés – but visitors are always welcome to make like a local and get a bundle of fi sh and chips and sit by the beach.

Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas
where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself
thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many
options available and take the time to spend on yourself.
Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatment
available; enjoy a relaxing facial treatment or invigorating massage, or
why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak
and a pedicure.
For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full
body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples
treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering
together.
Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland solariums, or give yourself
the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup
session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment.
If you fi nd yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile
beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a treatment in the
comfort of your own room.
Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure
you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments
to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city
centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms
conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you.
Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how
an accommodation property has been independently
rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of
accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication
of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the
room – inspection should be welcome.
Hotels generally off er tea/coff ee making facilities, a bathroom and
an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal
for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually off er
self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fi xed budget, try some of the
backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities.
The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping
in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there
are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To fi nd out
more, visit jasons.co.nz/auckland/accommodation.

The offi cial New Zealand Road Code guidebook is
available at most bookstores and petrol stations.
Road RulesNew Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and
give way to all traffi c on your right. All traffi c turning right should give
way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left.
This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles
are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants
of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile
phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on
the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless
otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws,
including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents
must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell
phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and
address and vehicle registration number.
Tips for Safe Driving• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care
not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.
• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200–300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.
• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Being home to over a third of New Zealand’s population,
Auckland is so much more than a bright-light-big-city
centre. This wildly varied region really does have it all.
Here’s a few of the character-fi lled spots on the outskirts
and outlying districts of Auckland.
Auckland’s Inner Suburbs
Mission Bay
Just a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the CBD along
Auckland’s beautiful waterfront, Mission Bay is a favourite hang-out spot
for Aucklanders and visitors alike. With a long golden beach and thriving
café scene, this is the place to take a gentle stroll along the Promenade
and enjoy an ice-cream as you people watch.
Ponsonby
Ponsonby Road is one of Auckland’s more boutique shopping areas,
lined with great cafés, restaurants, designer stores and hairdressers. It’s
popular with weekend brunchers and evening scenesters.
Newmarket
South of the CBD, is Newmarket, New Zealand’s fashion capital.... Where
the very best in fashion style and design is celebrated every day.
Parnell
One of Auckland’s more popular shopping areas, the colonial-style
buildings house a range of specialty and boutique shops, and there are
stacks of great cafés and restaurants.

spot. The gift and curio shops contain all sorts of unusual items and
it’s a popular brunch area at the weekend.

playground. The best-known is Rangitoto, with its landmark volcanic
cone providing spectacular views of Auckland. Nearby Waiheke Island

the main shopping area. Historic Devonport is renowned for its
waterfront cafés, antique stores and art and craft shops. A regular

well-kept eastern suburbs. Boaties love this area with its easy access
to the sea and there is an excellent marina facility at Half Moon Bay,

fencible cottages.
