Why Distance Learning to start the year?
● Per Public Health-Seattle & King County, it was determined there was no way to open schools without the risk of significant transmission of COVID-19.
● Student and staff safety is our highest priority.● We are in a 100 year pandemic.● Infection rates are higher than when school
closed in the spring.
Spring of 2020 was crisis distance learning.
Distance Learning program will be SIGNIFICANTLY different than last spring:● Teachers will provide daily instruction to all of their
students.● We will take attendance daily.● Grading practices will return.● Secondary students will take 3 classes and an
intervention/enrichment period. Credit awarded at the quarter.
● Training teachers with the Distance Learning Playbook.
Distance Learning Info:● Teachers will be teaching every day. Some teachers will work from their
classrooms, some will work from home.
● New instruction will be recorded each academic block (PK-5) or period
(GR6-12) so that students/families can access the instruction at a later time.
● ASD is providing Distance Learning Kits for grades PK-5.
● Late-starts will be on designated Mondays (late September-end of May) for
staff to meet in Professional Learning Community (PLCs) meetings.
● Students on Free/Reduced lunch can pick up lunches at schools; working on
plans for possibly delivering meals.
● Our focus right now is on Distance Learning.

English Learners● All teachers with EL students in class will provide support so students can understand
and respond to what they are learning. These supports can include:○ Pictures, diagrams, videos, and demonstrations that help them understand.○ Opportunities to practice new language by listening and speaking with the teacher
and with classmates.○ Providing sentences and words that help EL students express thoughts and
participate in the class.● EL teachers work with all other teachers to make sure EL students are supported. EL
teachers may provide support during other teachers lessons and/or help with assignments.
● Students will be able to check in with their EL teacher every week to support learning in all classes.
For Students Receiving Special Education Services
● All services will start the school year in a distance learning model.
● Special education services will look different than in the spring.
● Teams will be working to provide service in all identified areas of the IEPs, providing
access/support to general education according to the IEP and providing
schedules/structures to support distance learning.
● After re-engaging this fall, school teams will work closely with families to consider progress
made during the spring, ability to engage in distance learning, and other factors.
● Together IEP teams will determine what is required to meet those needs, such as more
robust and structured plan for engaging in distance learning, adjustments to IEP time or a
different model for learning.
Sports & Activities in Distance Learning● Sports seasons are postponed.● Schools are working on creative ways to engage students in clubs and
activities.● 5th grade band and orchestra will not be offered right now.
Technology for Distance Learning:● Common platform of Google Classroom for K-12 and option of SeeSaw for K-2. PK
will use Seesaw.
● Every student who needs one may checkout a Chromebook. Schools will be
checking in with you this month.
● Families who need Internet access may request help through their school too.
● Families can pick up technology at their schools the week of
August 31-September 4.
● Each school will have a contact for
technical support.
Supports for Families● We have a Family Resource Line staffed by bilingual staff. 253 887-2155
● We are working on resources for families to best support their students.
● We are working on childcare partnerships with Right at School and the
YMCA. We are also compiling a list of childcares in our area that can offer
access to school schedule.
● Schools can arrange home visits, following a defined protocol.
● Families will need to apply for Free Meal benefits; we cannot provide free
meals without qualifying this fall (like we were able to do through a waiver
during the spring closure).
Health & Safety in ASD Buildings● All staff and visitors are required to wear a face covering.● 6-foot physical distancing should be adhered to
whenever possible.● We have protocols in place for a confirmed COVID case
or COVID symptoms.● Limit of five people in-person.● Visitors to not come to ASD buildings if you have had any
COVID symptoms or been around anyone with COVID symptoms.
● ASD has ordered PPE--masks, hand sanitizer, etc. for when we return to in-person school.
