Ask Me About The question, “What’s going on at church?” is a frequently asked of me by those
who are less able to attend regularly as I make home or hospital visits. But it’s also
a question I get from folks who should know. You can help our congregation by
being in-the-know. Perhaps you can wear an Ask Me About button.
Read the monthly reports from congregational council Charles Bridgers and you
can wear several buttons:
Ask Me About the Call Committee
Ask Me About Property Repairs
Ask Me About our Budget
Read this newsletter and you can be in the know and answer:
When is Fall Kick Off?
What ministry opportunities are coming up?
When do confirmation classes begin?
What’s new this year with Wednesday’s at Redeemer?
Will there be retreat opportunities?
As Fall begins recommit to your church carrying on its vibrant ministry.

Sunday School Parent Coffee begins August 21
Parents of Sunday Schoolers are invited to Room 211 during the Sunday School hour for fellowship and a
laid back time to get to know others on the same journey of parenting. Come once or come every
week – we hope to see you at the Parent Coffee this year!
Calling all servants! Sunday School teachers play an important role in the faith formation of Redeemer’s children. Please prayerfully con-sider your role in instructing Redeemer's children in the faith. Sunday School teachers don't have to be grandparents or parents – anyone who has a heart for kids and a heart for Jesus can contribute to this important ministry. Teach-ers and classroom assistants commit to at least one Sunday per month in a classroom, and are provided with training and materials to build great lessons. The first teacher workday and training is Saturday, August 20 from 9-1 pm. Know someone who would make a great addition to the Sunday School team? Tell them that you see their gift, and then let us know - we'd love to talk to them about joining our team. For more information about any part of Chil-dren’s Sunday School, contact Jen Fuchs at [email protected].

The Long Hot Summer is almost over and we are getting back to school. Soon the cooler temps of the Fall will help us feel refreshed and ready to begin a new season in our Confirmation program. On Sunday August 21 we welcome students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades to gather in Rudisill Hall at 9:30 a.m. to launch the new confirmation year. We will meet teachers, group leaders and helpers and learn what is expected of each one as we look forward to a great year of learning; growing in faith and making new friends. Come Share Life!
Looking Forward to meeting each of you. In the Service of our Lord, Pastor Tom Kenny

Children are most welcome in worship at Redeemer. We hope that you bring your child to worship – even your
wiggly child – to model faithful worship for your child, and to teach your child how to be a worshipper. If your
child needs to leave the sanctuary, we hope you bring your child back soon to continue their worship in God’s
house. Children’s Church is one way to help families in the process of raising worshippers. In this ministry
serving children ages 3 – 2nd grade, children attend worship with their families, and depart for Children’s Church
part-way through the service. In Children’s Church, kids participate in a pint-sized liturgy, complete with songs,
prayers, confession, and litany. They hear the word of God and experience the Bible message through hands-on
activities. All that in time to return to their parents before Communion. If its your child’s first time in Children’s
Church, feel free to attend with your child, both to help with the transition to the new experience, and so you can
see what we’re up to! We welcome adult and youth helpers to serve in Children’s Church – please contact Jen
Fuchs for more information at [email protected]. Children’s Church is available during most 11:00 am
worship services, and during 9:45 am worship when we do not offer Sunday School.
Faith Stepping Stones is a ministry in which families and the church partner to live out the promises made the day of a child’s baptism. During the Service of Holy Baptism in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, parents promise the
following: to live with them among God’s faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the Holy Scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer.
These promises don’t end with baptism and Faith Stepping Stones offer resources to families and the congregation for faith development.

The wars in the Middle East have become religious wars in which God is believed to be directly engaged on behalf of one
side against the other. Beyond Fundamentalism is both an in-depth study of the ideology fueling al-Qa‘ida, the Taliban, and like-minded militants throughout the Muslim world and an exploration of religious violence in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Aslan writes that we must strip the conflicts of our world of their religious connotations and address the earthly grievances that always lie at its root.

Midtown Lutheran Preschool nurtures and educates children to be wholehearted, compassionate, principled individuals who contribute positively to the world community. Play-Projects-Dual Language | August-May | M-F | 9AM-1PM It is an exciting time for Midtown Lutheran Preschool as we enter into our 4th year of operation! This past school year 2015-2016 we grew about 40% and hope, once again, to add many more students over the summer and into the school year! We are creeping up on 30 enrolled students and have 5 staff. We have a diverse set of families – most of whom live and work in Midtown! As always, we ask that you spread the word of our program to friends and family. If you’d like more information, a tour, or to volunteer contact Kate Elkins, preschool director at [email protected]. Redeemer continues to be a place where our members can live out their faith in community, and in service. The opportunities for service are even greater this Fall as Redeemer will participate in the ELCA, Churchwide event, God’s Work Our Hands Sunday (GWOH). GWOH Sunday is promoted each year so that Lutheran congregations can go out from their church buildings and into their communities to perform acts of service with no strings attached. Other congregations in our conference have participated previously, but now we at Redeemer are ready to join in this exciting and uniting experience. Sunday services will be abbreviated on Sept. 11 so teams can be sent into the community and have ample time to perform tasks. GWOH will take place on September 11, the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and the emphasis will be on first responders. Words from our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, illustrates the reason behind the theme, “The world can be a dangerous place. But there are some who, when disaster strikes, run toward the danger. These are the first responders, firefighters, police and EMTs, who live out their baptismal vocation in service to their communities in times of intense need. They do God’s work with their hands.” Teams will be reflective of the first responder emphasis and include many other opportunities for service within the Midtown neighborhood. If you have an idea for a service team, or would like to lead a team, please contact Vicar Karen. In addition to GWOH Sunday, there are other opportunities for service at Redeemer. Visit the Outreach and Evangelism tables on August 14 – Fall Kick Off Sunday – to learn how you can do the work of God and be God’s hands in our congregation and community.

by Cathy Vogel, Redeemer Heritage Guild Good Shepherd Window and other Redeemer Memories
The beautiful Good Shepherd Window in our Chapel is one of Redeemer's most travelled artifacts. Inscribed “Presented by the Sunday School of Grace Church, Prosperity, S.C.”, it was installed in time for the opening service at Redeemer's first site on Trinity Avenue in August 1905. Grace Church Prosperity is significant because many of Redeemer's Charter and Near-Charter Members had deep family roots in that church. In 1937, the window was installed above the main entrance of Redeemer's first church on Peachtree Street where it served for twenty-four more years. Lighted from behind, and facing Peachtree Street, Redeemer became known to passers-by as “The Church of the Lighted Window”. In 1962, the window travelled once more to the “Hall of the Good Shepherd” (now, Rudisill Hall), when the old church made way for the current Education Building. But the window was not yet through with its travels. Since 1996, the window has once again turned its message of “Christ, the Good Shepherd” toward Peachtree Street in the Chapel created with the construction of Sims Atrium. The window is fashioned of painted, stained glass and is a replica of a painting by a German artist Bernhard Plockhorst (1825-1907). The maker is unknown, but we do know that the cost was $150. Today this valuable
Redeemer heirloom is priceless as it connects us to our beginnings as the first English speaking Lutheran Church in Atlanta 113 years ago. The message of the window is taken from John 10:1-16. Jesus' concern and compassion is seen in his gaze as he looks at the tiny, injured lamb in his arm. The characteristics of the Good Shepherd listed in the passage, include: his sheep know his voice and will follow him, he lays down his life for his sheep, he is the Gate and “whoever enters by me will be saved...and find pasture”. Look among the sheep depicted in the window who gather around the Good Shepherd. Close study reveals almost human faces. They are individuals; he calls them all by name (v.3). In v.16 we learn that there are other sheep that do not belong to this fold and“I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” It is a message of comfort and inclusion for our neighbors along Peachtree Street. Continued next page
Inner Treasures & Hidden Secrets
Two other artifacts in the Chapel from the “Little Stone Church” on Trinity Avenue are the marble Font and brass Altar Cross seen just inside the Chapel doors. Both were memorial gifts for children tragically lost during 1910. The Font memorializes Margareta Anderson (1903-1910) who was struck by a car on Georgia Avenue after she darted out from behind a trolley. Her parents were Charter Members of Redeemer. The cross was given in memory of Axel Herbert Anderson, no relation, who drowned in the lake at Piedmont Park at age 16. As we move toward the future, let's not forget that Redeemer has a long history of faithful saints who have brought us to this place. Stop by the Chapel, study the window, touch the historic font, and admire the beautiful cross. Then look out to Peachtree Street; that is why God has brought us here.

Redeemer supported the 14th Team Nicaragua Medical Missions trip in June. The team of 25 folks, including Redeemer
members Carol Swisher, Leslie Paulson, Leith Fitch, and Sandy McGaffigan, delivered free medical care and supplies to
hundreds of poor people in Nicaragua. We serve people who have no or little access to medical care. This year the
team traveled by school bus then boat across the country from the west coast to east, then sets up makeshift clinics on
3 different days in 3 different locations. Our first clinic was a 30 minutes truck ride past the end of the road, at a site
where a local missionary is starting a church. One pregnant woman walked 3 miles to see us. Fortunately we found her
healthy and gave her some vitamins, prayer, and a ride on our truck back toward home. We offer practical evidence of
Jesus’ love and concern for his people when we give them free medical care under the Church’s roof. After returning to
the west coast we had another free clinic at the missionary elementary school- CALT- some members of the medical
team started and support (with generous help from others).
We are very grateful for the ongoing support we receive from our pastors,
staff and many members of Redeemer. We thank you for your prayers, words
of encouragement and contributions to our efforts to spread the love of Christ
in the world. Your support makes this work possible.
