Enviros Wilderness School Association (Enviros) is a charitable, non-profit community of people, committed to enhancing the quality of family life in Alberta. We engage children, youth, adults and families in experiential-based opportunities to support them in learning and developing skills that foster independence. During the fall and winter of 1976, the first group of Enviros youth workers and volunteers, along with eight youth, ventured into the wilderness of the Rocky Mountain foothills. This outing was an exercise in self-discipline and personal growth that lasted eight months. While living in tents and attending school on site; the youth, through determination and co-operation, managed to succeed in building the first Enviros wilderness facility. This success founded the legacy of experiential education that has become Enviros’ trademark in child, youth and family services. Since 1976, Enviros has continued to offer innovative, family oriented programming. Enviros has developed programs, transferring the wilderness learning’s into the urban, community and family environment. Since becoming an incorporated non-profit society in 1980, Enviros has grown to become one of the region’s most flexible and adaptive children, youth, and family service agencies. Today Enviros provides seven community based programs including Foster Care, High Fidelity Wraparound, FASD support, Youth Transition to Adulthood, Student Health Partnership: Family-School Liaison Program and Respite Care. We deliver an adolescent and young adult male 12-week wilderness based addiction treatment programs, three Child Welfare residential programs and a Young Offender Open Custody program. With the necessary documents in hand, we invite you to consider us as an employment option or as a practicum site for your student placement.

DESCRIPTIONS

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONSprovide evidence-based programming by instituting systematic outcome evaluation of Challenge programs.During this workshop, participants will:· Experience key elements of a successful evaluation tool· Gain new tools and techniques for developing evidence-based programming· Understand current trends in educational research.· Create an implementation plan for new ideas.

Open to alll. Schools and Colleges.

SELF-REGULATION VERSUS SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING: HOW EE ADDRESSES BOTH EDUCATIONAL AND COUNSELLING CONCEPTS SHELDON FRANKEN (90mins):Do we need teach social and emotional skills in order to help our students self-regulate or do we need to focus on self-regulation first in order to help our students be receptive to social-emotional learning? During this workshop participants will focus on how this debate has translated to teaching practices within the Delta School District and explore how experiential education practices simultaneously address both self-regulation and social emotional learning. Participants will look at some of experiential education’s activities and see how they can meet the learning objectives of self-regulation and social emotional learning. Beginner. Facilitation/Processing.

SESSION 2 HOW TO MAKE A BUCK USING EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION ILANA GUTTMANN (3 hrs):Take a look at how to harness the wind of any organization by using experiential techniques to achieve goals in any industry... including the ones that can pay a living wage. Advanced. EBTD.

SHARING STRATGIES, TECHNIQUES AND FRAMING KRAG UNSOELD AND SHELDON FRANKEN (3hrs): Join together with fellow experiential educators to learn how different practitioners frame, introduce, conduct, and debrief various experiential and challenge tools. This will be an opportunity to learn how facilitation needs to change according to the nature of the group, the intended outcomes, and so forth. Prepare to have a fuller understanding of both the breadth and depth of various learning activities and tools. Beginner. Facilitation/Processing.

PRACTICING WHAT WE PREACHMEGHAN MCCANN (90mins): Have you ever thought about how you could become a better practitioner? Do you reflect on your own learning and life journey that brought you to your vocation? Have you ever thought about the importance of engaging in the same practices that you facilitate for others? This workshop is an

SESSION 1 TWEETING, NOT JUST FOR THE BIRDS – HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN AMPLIFY OUTDOOR, EXPERIENTIAL, AND ECOLOGICAL EDUCATIONW. BRADLEY GOODERHAM (90mins): The recent excitement over educational technology has the potential to overshadow the time-tested successes of outdoor, experiential, and ecological education (OE3). However recent research suggests that students perceive OE3-focused integrated semester programs as being significantly better at developing 21st-century core competencies. This workshop will explore the historical and future contexts of the technology-nature interactions and discussion will focus on when, where and how each can amplify the experience of the other. Some activities will require a mobile device, some will require rubber boots, and some will require both! Open to alll.Art and Science of Teaching.

EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAM DESIGNSCOTT VANDERWEY & ROBBY

COOPER (90mins): For years, course managers and facilitators have compiled anecdotal evidence in support of challenge courses as a means for changing lives, developing character and supporting student behavior change, but have had very little evidence to prove it. The purpose of the research is to

2015 AEE NW Conference 11

opportunity to allow participants to reflect on these questions and to deeply explore how we can become more effective in our work by sharing practices that sustain us. This workshop is geared for practitioners of adventure therapy and outdoor, Intermediate. Facilitation/Processing.

CREATIVITY IN ECOLOGICAL LEARNING LEE BEAVINGTON (90mins): Ever wish you could be scientific and creative? This fun and engaging workshop will have participants engage and embody several exercises that relate to key ecological concepts, from symbiosis and predation, to communicating as reptiles do (without sound!), and role playing the carbon cycle. Come challenge the boundaries of active learning! We will also explore the power of stillness, and how learning to listen in the forest can foster both creative expression and a deeper connection to our planet’s ecology. Open to alll. Schools and Colleges

SESSION 3SUPERCHARGING NEW STAFF, PARENTS, TEACHERS, CHAPERONES, AND VOLUNTEERS: MAKING YOUR TEAM BIGGER AND BETTER BRIAN BRANDT & DAN TEUTEBERG (90 mins): Many programs use new staff, parents, teachers, and volunteers, or want to.

These adults want the best experience for their youth but many are not trained in experiential education. By providing a flexible card resource everyone is supported in running either pre, during and post trip meetings that reduce negative behaviors, develop life skills, are fun, engaging, and improve knowledge. Caution these cards are easily used for staff meetings, events, and training entry level staff in how to run highly engaging and active experiential education meetings. Turn passive participants to active allies. Increase outcomes. A great resource for training chaperones! Open to alll. Schools and Colleges.

THE FINER POINTS OF EXPERIENTIAL ACADEMICS NICK BOULDING (90mins): Nick is a classroom teacher from the Take a Hike program, which has students complete their academics on outdoor trips. In this workshop, participants will learn how to deliver detailed lessons from Navigation to Ecology experientially. Participants will also explore the pitfalls of trying to teach detailed lessons in the field while maintaining fun and memorability. Open to alll. Schools and Colleges.

SESSION 4 EXPLORING ENVIRONMENTAL ART AS A MEANS TO DEEPENING OBSERVATION, CONNECTION AND REFLECTION JOSHUA KELLER (90mins): Reimagine what an art program in

an experiential education setting could look like. This workshop will give educators and therapists concepts, vocabulary, and a toolkit of environmental art activities that engage participants to look closer, connect more powerfully with people and place, and to reflect sincerely upon self and others. There will be no glitter covered pine-cones, but instead ideas for versatile, creative, meaningful themes and projects, and an opportunity for co-creation and a conversation about our creative impulses. Open to alll. Art & Science of Teaching.

DRAMATIC PLAY, MINDFULNESS & CONFLICT RESOLUTION MICHAEL WALLACE (90mins): Another intriguing installment of utilizing dramatic techniques in challenge facilitation offered up by the Master Thespian himself, Michael Wallace. Dramatic Play, Mindfulness and Conflict Resolution brings together three very old systems of inter- and intra-personal confrontation in an innovative approach that helps facilitators ground themselves and their participants in a playful and honest exploration of conflict styles. At the heart of this method is mindfulness of one’s own preferred approach to conflict. Through group interaction we will challenge ourselves to try on different roles to find new and possibly meaningful solutions in our group work. Intermediate. Facilitation/Processing.

DESCRIPTIONS

ANYBODY, ANYWHERETINA CAMERON (90mins):We know that experiential learning can happen anywhere but do you believe it can happen with anyone? This workshop will highlight the Respite Care Connection program in Calgary and the work being done with school aged children and youth with various behavioural diagnoses, challenges and needs. Through recreational programming we build social skills, life skills, positive peer interactions and create success! Part lecture-based and part interactive, this workshop will give participants ideas of how to create inclusion for those with special needs, sensory issues or challenging behaviours. Participants will also be involved in a simulation exercise. Come and play with us! Open to all. Facilitation/Processing.

CREATIVE INTENTION SETTING THROUGH ART JOURNALING MICHELLE YAMAMOTO (3hrs): Art journaling is a powerful tool for processing on many levels. This practice reduces stress, increases energy, guides ones’ spiritual exploration and helps navigate problems and set important goals. This creative process is also a valuable healing tool that can be shared with people you work with who have difficulties putting language to their emotions or expressing how they feel. Art Journaling can help support the process of envisioning their goals, which helps people connect to the essence of who they are. Workshop size limited to 10 participants. Art

supplies cost: Option 1 - $15, includes a journal and art supplies OR Option 2 $10 includes craft paper and art supplies. Open to all. M/B/S Facilitation/Processing.

ENVIROS’ INTRODUCTION TO EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, MICHELLE GAUDEK AND APRIL MACDOUGALL (3 hours): Enviros uses Experiential Learning as a common modality of practice across all its Social Service programs. Because the spectrum of services is broad this workshop introduces the foundational philosophy of EL helping participants to understand how EL looks very different depending on the client group and intention. Through intentional activities this workshop uses a clear structure that invites participants to learn the conditions and principles of Experiential Learning. We unpack the conditions of being on a shared journey, inviting client participation, individualizing, creating challenge, reflection and transferring the learning into life. This training also provides the steps and hands on opportunity to collaboratively design an experience based on a chosen intention.Beginner Facilitation/Processing.

SESSION 5 TRANSFORMATION THROUGH HARNESSING THE WIND: MINDFULNESS-BASED EXPERIENCES IN ADDICTION RECOVERY CALYX DONNA KUPROWSKI AND

MOIRA MCNAIRNAY (90mins): Enviros Shunda Creek is a three month adult, voluntary addiction/mental health treatment centre serving males aged 18-24. We use wilderness and experiential learning as primary tools. As a main treatment modality, we build a community of support and a culture of intentionality. Shunda Creek’s program is known as an innovator in our field for combining mindfulness-based recovery in a remote wilderness setting in the Canadian Rockies. Workshop participants will learn mindfulness-based practices to support themselves and the clients they serve to harness the winds of the mind, regulate the sometimes blustery nervous system, root their physical body in present awareness, and reconnect with the zephyr of the spirit.Open to all. Therapeutic.

RACCOON CIRCLES: CONNECT UP!MANDY STEWART AND JARIN STORRS (90mins): Raccoon Circles (webbing loops) are an inexpensive, portable, and effective tool for group facilitation. Gain new activities for your experiential toolbox and have fun using Raccoon Circles with your peers. Examine which activities are useful with different group formation stages. Take a look at your own facilitation habits as we each ponder the question, “Do I usually choose my activities based on the tools I have at my disposal, or based on the nature of the activity and the potential outcome for my group?” Play, ponder, and grow by connecting with the wonderful world of webbing!Open to all. Adventure-based programing.

MISSION,VISION: GROUNDING AN ORGANIZATION FOR GROWTH AND SUCCESSDAN TEUTEBERG (90mins):Volunteer-led groups, such as Master Gardeners, 4-H clubs, and local farming groups, are a tremendous asset to the University Extension system. Groups such as these greatly expand the reach and depth of Extension programs, and make it possible to offer a wide variety of educational opportunities. It is imperative, however, that these groups truly understand, embrace, and incorporate the Mission and Vision of Extension. Understanding ways to educate staff and volunteers about the importance of the Mission and Vision of your organization is critical for growth and success. Open to all. EBTD.
