Message from theEditorial Review Board Chair

A New Erafor the Journal

Since 1995, the Journal of the Air &Waste Management Association hasbenefited from the able direction

of Technical Editor-in-Chief Dr. PetrosKoutrakis, professor of environmentalsciences at the Harvard School of Pub-lic Health. Beginning with the Julyissue, however, Dr. Koutrakis will turnover his editorial duties to Dr. TimKeener, professor of civil and environ-mental engineering at the Universityof Cincinnati. Dr. Keener directs theuniversity’s Air Pollution Control Labo-ratory, teaches and advises graduate stu-dents, and publishes articles on air andwater pollution control. He is a long-time A&WMA member and a formerboard member, where he was a strongadvocate for the Association’s publica-tions. Dr. Keener’s expertise will con-tinue the diversification of Journalarticles emphasized by Dr. Koutrakisinto the areas of emissions reduction en-gineering and the water and soil media.Following the example of other majorjournals in our field, Dr. Keener will bejoined by a co-editor, Dr. George Hidy, who will assist in managing peer re-views, identify and coordinate theme-based issues, and promote a strongerlink between the research presented inthe Journal and the environmental pro-fessionals who might use it to set policyor improve technology. Dr. Hidy’s ex-periences as a university professor, presi-dent of the Desert Research Institute, and vice president of a consulting firmand a major research organization(EPRI) will be of great benefit to theJournal’s efforts to expand its scope andreadership.

In his eight years as Editor, Dr.Koutrakis made major improvements inthe Journal. He managed the spin-off ofthe Association’s policy and informational

magazine, EM, which had previously beencombined with the Journal. He initiated acomputer-based management system fortracking manuscripts, reviewers, revisions, and final publication. He recruited manynew authors from all over the world tothe Journal, thereby fostering interna-tional collaboration and communicationof environmental advances. And hehelped countless individual authors withtechnical advice, editing assistance, andencouragement. Owing to his otheradministrative, academic, and researchduties, Dr. Koutrakis must move on withhis career, but he will still be available tothe Journal for consultation and advice. After a thorough recruitment process, theEditorial Review Board is confident thatDr. Keener and Dr. Hidy will carry on andenhance the work of Dr. Koutrakis andhis predecessors.

In addition to new editors, the Jour-nal is also implementing a new online

manuscript submittal and review systembeginning May 1, 2003. The new sys-tem will make it easier and quicker forauthors to submit manuscripts to theJournal. It will also simplify and expe-dite the peer-review process, so we ex-pect the time between submittal andpublication to diminish even further.(To try out the new system, please visitthe Journal Web site at www.awma.org/pubs/aboutjour.htm.)

The Editorial Review Board and thePublications Committee welcome Dr.Keener and Dr. Hidy to the leadership ofthe Journal of the Air & Waste ManagementAssociation, and we offer our heartfeltthanks to Dr. Petros Koutrakis for hisdedication and contributions to the con-tinuation of our 50-year-old flagshippublication.
