• THE AIMS THEN LEAD TO A HYPOTHESIS
HYPOTHESIS
• THIS IS A CLEAR TESTABLE STATEMENT OF WHAT THE RESEARCHER BELIEVES TO BE TRUE AND ITS WHAT HE AIMS TO DEMONSTRATE IN THE STUDY.
• A HYPOTHESIS STATES THE EXPECTED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE I.V AND THE D.V .
HYPOTHESIS
• IN ALERNETHY’S ON CONTEXT AND MEMORY RECALL STUDY THE EXPERIMENTAL (ALTERNATIVE) HYPOTHESIS MIGHT BE
PARTICIPANTS DO BETTER ON A TEST WHEN TESTED IN THE SAME ROOM WHERE THEY WERE TAUGHT RATHER THAN TESTED IN A DIFFERENT ROOM
HYPOTHESIS
• THE D.V WAS PERFORMANCE ON THE TEST THE I.V WAS WHERE THE PARTICIPANTS WERE TESTE

DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS
• A DIRECTIOAL HYPOTHESIS PREDICTS THE OF DIFFERENCE OR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GROUPS OF PARTICIPANTS
• STATES WHICH SET OF SCORES WILL BE BETTER/FASTER IN AN EXPERIMENT
• POSITIVELY OR NEGATIVELY CORRELATED
• PRIVIOUS RESEARCH SUGGESTS THE DIRECTION OF THE ALERTNATIVE HYPOTHESIS
NON DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS
• PROPOSES THAT THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE OR RELATIONSHIP BUT DOES NOT STATE THE DIRECTION.
• ALLOWS FOR A DIFFERENCE/RELATIONSHIP OCCURRING IN EITHER DIRECTION OR PRIVIOUS RESEARCH HAS BEEN INCONCLUSIVE.
NON DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS
• PARTICIPANTS PERFORM DIFFRENTLY DEPENDING ON WHETHER THEY ARE TESTED IN THE SAME ROOM WHERE THEY WERE TAUGHT RATHER THAN TESTED IN A DIFFERENT ROOM.
• THIS IS A NON -DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS BECAUSE IT JUST PROPOSES THAT THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS OF PARTICIPANTS
NON DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS
• A NON DIRECTIONAL HYPOTHESIS PREDICTS SIMPLY THAT THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS OF PARTICIPANTS
THE NULL HYPOTHESIS
• A STATEMENT OF NO DIFFERENCE OR NO RELATIONSHIP.
• IT ACTS AS A BASELINE CONCLUSION IN A RESEARCH STUDY.
THE NULL HYPOTHESIS
• RESEARCHERS STATE THE NULL HYPOTHESIS
THERE WILL BE NO DIFFERENCE IN RECALL SCORES BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS TESTED IN THE SAME ROOM WHERE THET WERE TAUGHT AND THOSE TESTED IN A DIFFERENT ROOM TO WHERE THET WERE TAUGHT.
• THE NULL HYPOTHESIS IS THE ONE WE ARE TESTING IF THE SCORES DO NOT PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES THEN WE ACCEPT THE NULL HYPOTHESIS .
• IF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CONDITIONS IS SIGNIFICANT THE NULL HYPOTHESIS CAN BE REJECTED
THE NULL HYPOTHESIS
• THERE WILL BE NO DIFFERENCE IN STRESS LEVELS (G.S.R) BETWEEN PARTICIPANTS UNDERTAKING A VIGILANCE TASK IN THE NOISE CONDITION AND THOSE IN THE NO NOISE CONDITION.
