Photography exhibition Redeemed re-‐creation of Fred Ross Mural opens at City of Saint John Gallery Jan 17 The City of Saint John Gallery, located in the Saint John Arts Centre is proud to present Redeemed – a 7-‐week exhibition of photographs by New Brunswick artist James Wilson documenting the re-‐creation of the Fred Ross Mural at UNB Fredericton. The exhibition opens Friday January 17 from 5:30-‐7:30pm. The exhibition, organized by the Fredericton’s UNB Art Centre, is a photographic account of the re-‐creation of The Destruction of War and Rebuilding the World through Education, a mural originally painted by Fred Ross in 1948 at Fredericton High School. The murals were subsequently destroyed and lost over time, though the original cartoons were held in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. The new work can now be seen in the Richard J. Currie Center at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Work on the re-‐creation began early in 2011 at the Saint John Arts Centre and was undertaken by Amy Ash, Sara Griffin, and Fred Willar under the direction of Fred Ross. Saint John photographer James Wilson captured this process in an exciting series of black and white images.

There will also be a book launch of Redeemed published by Gooselane and edited by William Forrestall. James Wilson, a long-‐standing friend of Fred Ross, documented the restoration from its earliest stages, bringing to the reader an immediate sense of the process through his revealing photographic essay. Featured in this book are five essays exploring different aspects of one of the most unique art restoration projects in Canadian art history. The contributors include artist and writer Virgil Hammock, Art Critic and Professor Emeritus at Mount Allison University; Charles Hill, Curator of Canadian Art at the National Gallery of Canada; John Leroux, Architect and Art Historian; Tom Smart, Curator and Writer; and William Forrestall. As well, Fred Ross offers his first-‐hand recollections in an interview covering the development of the project from its inception in 1946 to its re-‐animation and final unveiling in 2011. Redeemed will be on view from January 17 through March 8, 2014 at the City of Saint John Gallery located in the Saint John Arts Centre, 20 Peel Plaza. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and for special events. Admission is free. Everyone welcome! The City of Saint John Gallery is a program of the City’s Cultural Affairs Office. It is Atlantic Canada’s first municipal gallery, established in 1980. 5. Lynn Davies | Gerard Collins Open Set | Book Draw Sunday, January 19, 2pm 554 Queen Street (Molly’s Coffee House) The afternoon program includes a book draw and an open set, for those among us who wish to share our writing at the mic (three minutes each). Buy a drink and/or lunch from our eclectic hosts Molly and Daryl, find a place at one of our friendly and sometimes crowded tables, and enjoy an afternoon dedicated to literature that entertains, soothes, and/or makes one glad to be alive, in Fredericton. *** Gerard Collins is a St. John’s-‐based author, born in Placentia, NL. He did a conjoint BA/B.Ed. at Memorial University, and, after dabbling in the painful art of substitute teaching, did a MA in English, then Ph.D. in ghost fictions at Acadia. He has been a landscaper, garbage collector, agricultural inspector, writing tutor, musician, university lecturer, Spinal Tap drummer, and penitentiary guard in the premiere episode of Republic of Doyle. Gerard's first book of fiction, Moonlight Sketches, won the 2012 Ches Crosbie Barristers Awards for outstanding work of fiction; his first novel, Finton Moon, won the Percy Janes First Novel Award—both by Killick Press. Also, and holy cow, Finton Moon has been nominated for the 2014 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Lynn Davies (accidental poet) was born in Moncton, lived part of her childhood in Newcastle, and spent 16 years in Dartmouth, NS. She has traveled extensively in the world, and now lives in Fredericton. Her 1999 book of poetry, The Bridge that Carries the Road, was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award, and short-‐listed for the Gerald Lampert Award. Individual poems have been broadcast on the CBC and included in a number of anthologies and literary magazines, such as The Fiddlehead, The Malahat Review, and The New Brunswick Reader. Other books are Where Sound Pools (2005) and How the God’s Pour Tea (2013). Davies’s interest in place,

relationships between people, nature, and family are prominent themes. Her essays and non-‐fiction pieces have been printed in a variety of magazines and newspapers across Canada, including Canadian Geographic and the Globe and Mail. 10. Monday Night Film Series presents WADJDA Jan 20 WADJDA January 20, 2014, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Director: Haifaa Al-‐Mansour Saudi Arabia/Germany, 2013 Arabic with English subtitles 98 minutes Principal Cast: Waad Mohammed, Reem Abdullah, Abdullrahman Al Gohani Saudi Arabia’s first-‐ever submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, Haifaa Al-‐Mansour’s Wadjda—which is not only the country’s first film by a female director, but one of the first features ever shot in Saudi Arabia—is a deceptively simple story about a determined 10-‐year-‐old girl who dreams of owning a bicycle, and is willing to do just about anything to obtain it. An energetic, fun-‐loving, and entrepreneurial girl living in a suburb of the Saudi capital of Riyadh, Wadjda (newcomer Waad Mohammed) constantly pushes against the boundaries of her conservative community, wearing high-‐top Converse sneakers under the long-‐robed abaya uniform forced upon her by her strict religious school, and clandestinely listening to underground pop–music stations in her equally strict home. After a fight with her friend Abdullah, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale and becomes determined to buy it in order to beat Abdullah in a race. However, Wadjda’s mother (Reem Abdullah), fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue, forbids her. Undeterred, Wadjda decides to try and raise the required 800 riyals herself by entering a Qur’an contest at her school that offers a cash prize. Cinemas have been banned in Saudi Arabia since the 1980s, and it is only recently that this policy has been relaxed (and then only for special holidays). As with such celebrated directors of the Iranian New Wave as Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi, who used stories about children to obliquely critique and comment upon their comparably repressive society, Al-‐Mansour employs Wadjda’s quest to offer a window into women’s lives under an authoritarian regime—and in her high-‐spirited heroine’s resourcefulness and determination, she shows the irresistible yearning for change that emerges from even the most seemingly hopeless situation. Charming, touching and inspirational, Wadjda is a must-‐see. ____________________ This term, 13 limited release, independent foreign & Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular admission is $7 / Member’s admission is $4. Jan-‐April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and up)/NBFC Members). CONSUME by Allison Green opens at Charlotte Glencross Gallery Jan 24 The Charlotte Street Arts Centre presents CONSUME by Fredericton-‐based artist, Allison Green, a solo exhibition of mixed media portraits discussing the power of vice to mould identity. Consume opens in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery on Friday January 24 from 5:30-‐7pm and runs until March 3, 2014. Green describes the concept behind the exhibition by explaining that, “In pursuit of our wants, we undercut our needs. Our identities and motivations are hijacked for one goal: to consume.” About the works, she describes, “Each piece is a portrait of an individual with a past or present addiction. They are constructed entirely of objects related to that particular vice. I’ve worn all these faces too. They are not hard to find… Addiction comes for each of us: the TV watcher, the shopper, the compulsive eater. It is a thing inside.” The found object portraits in Consume are a departure from Allison Green’s usual textile-‐based work. Green’s art practice has incorporated a number of technical approaches, such as free motion machine quilting (stitch drawing), silk painting, felting, drawing and more, in the production of wearable art, textile objects, illustrations and sculpture. As well, she recently completed an internship at Sculpture Saint John that gave her an opportunity to work with granite, fuelling a passion for merging textile, stone and the natural world. Green holds a diploma in Fashion: Textile Design from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and is currently continuing at NBCCD in the Graduate Studies certificate program. Her notable accomplishments as a student include the Governor General’s Academic Medal, the Duffie-‐Crowell Award, the Nel Oudemans Scholarship and a multitude of other scholarships and awards recognizing her academic achievements. Green has shown her work in group exhibitions throughout the Atlantic provinces. Consume is her first solo exhibition. The Charlotte Street Arts Centre opens the doors of creative expression to all. Admission to the Charlotte Glencross Gallery is always free, and all are welcome to join us for the opening reception on January 24, beginning at 5:30pm. 14.
